In a sneak peek for Episode 3 of The Last of Us Season 2, HBO has made it clear what happens to Pedro Pascal’s character, Joel Miller.
In the second installment of the post-apocalyptic drama series, the storyline mirrors that found in Naughty Dog’s game, “The Last of Us Part 2.” This season features contentious moments revolving around characters Joel, Ellie (played by Bella Ramsey), and a fresh addition, Abby (portrayed by Kaitlyn Dever).
In the heart-wrenching second episode of “The Last of Us” Season 2, entitled ‘Through The Valley,’ I found myself hit with an emotional punch that left me breathless.

Did Joel Really Die In The Last of Us? Death Confirmed by HBO Season 2 Episode 3 Promo
In the finale of The Last of Us Season 2, Joel met a tragic end at the hands of Abby, and the teaser for Episode 3 hints that this loss is irreversible.
In simple terms, a one-minute preview of Episode 3 from Season 2 of “The Last of Us” depicts the main characters grappling with the aftermath of Joel’s demise.
One scene in the preview depicts Ellie (who had a close bond with Joel, even after their recent disagreements) pausing for an emotional moment at her surrogate father’s home, inhaling deeply from his worn coat.
In the promo, it’s shown that Joel’s sibling, Tommy (portrayed by Gabriel Luna), is similarly present and visibly distraught, weeping over Joel’s body that is covered with a shroud.
Tommy wasn’t present when his brother passed away; instead, he was handling the assault by the infected in Jackson. However, it seems like news of this event won’t take too much time to get to him.
Another shot displays Ellie knelt before a gravestone engraved with Joel’s name, suggesting that there will be no unexpected return to life for him.
It’s not particularly shocking, considering that Episode 2 vividly depicted Joel’s death as promised by Abby at the end of Episode 1, where she vowed to take his life gradually.

Does Joel Die In Last of Us 2 Video Game Just Like In Season 2?
In keeping with its usual approach, HBO’s version of “The Last of Us” has generally adhered closely to the storyline of Naughty Dog’s games. However, the TV show altered a few details in Joel’s final scene.
In my perspective as a movie reviewer, the narrative unfolded much like a game of consequences in “The Last of Us Part II”. Joel’s fateful actions at the Salt Lake hospital, where he took the lives of numerous Fireflies to safeguard Ellie’s life, ultimately came back to haunt him. It was later disclosed that one of these fallen Fireflies was none other than Abby’s father. This revelation added a layer of complexity and emotional turmoil to both characters’ journeys, making the storyline even more gripping and impactful.
In the TV show version, it’s revealed earlier that Abby’s father was the same doctor who was killed by Joel at the start, contrasting with the game where players uncover Abby’s motivations only halfway through, which is linked to her father’s death.
In a different rendition from the game “The Last of Us,” it’s worth noting that in the series, Joel’s companion during his tragic death scene isn’t Tommy as in the game, but rather Dina who takes on this role instead.
Nevertheless, the remaining events unfolded remarkably similarly to the game, with Abby methodically killing Joel, and Ellie stumbling upon them just as the end approached.
In the game, once Abby kills Joel with a golf club, one of Ellie’s WLF companions knocks her unconscious so she can’t pursue them. HBO’s adaptation intensifies this violent scene by wounding Ellie instead, leaving her conscious as she struggles to reach and cradle Joel’s injured body.
In the game “The Last of Us”, it may surprise some that Joel is no longer alive. However, there’s a possibility that viewers could see more of actor Pascal in the series, as there are numerous unanswered questions about his character, such as what led Joel to kill Eugene.
In the trailers, it has been hinted that more flashback sequences involving Joel will be shown, mirroring the narrative structure of “The Last of Us Part 2.”
