As revealed in investor presentations, Publisher Devolver Digital is planning to put more emphasis on growing their current franchise series while also developing fresh, new games.
On Bluesky, mauronl has posted some visuals showcasing the company’s top-earning video games, along with an interesting observation: players tend to prefer sticking with familiar game series rather than purchasing new, unestablished titles.
The game titled “Cult of the Lamb,” published by Devolver Digital, has proven to be their most successful title, generating more than $90 million in total earnings throughout its lifetime. Not far behind is “Astroneer,” which surpassed the $80 million mark in sales.
Other top-earning IPs include Stronghold, Serious Sam, Gungeon, Shadow Warrior, and Hotline Miami.
Essentially, for Devolver, the crucial point is that their biggest earners are well-established intellectual properties. It appears that the gamers are investing more of their time into these established titles instead of the newly released ones.
Initially released as a brand-new game in 2022, Cult of the Lamb has undergone numerous updates and additions, including downloadable content (DLC) and expansions. As a result, it’s lived much longer than initially anticipated following its debut.
In addition to receiving robust post-release support, the game Astroneer has been scheduled for a spin-off titled Starseeker: Astroneer Expeditions, set to launch in 2026.
On the second post circulating on social platforms, it showcased sales/player numbers for three games from Devolver: GORN with over 1.5 million units sold, Astroneer boasting more than 13 million players, and the Gungeon series exceeding 5 million units sold.
Due to the success of each, they’re all getting sequels or follow-ups.
It seems that Devolver Digital might be focusing a bit more on creating franchise series with follow-ups or enhancing their games by offering additional content after release.
To clarify, it appears that the publisher continues its mission of introducing new games, as projects like Baby Steps, Skate Story, and Possessors are currently being developed.
What are your thoughts on the recent Devolver Digital updates? It’s intriguing that Cult of the Lamb has emerged as their best-selling title to date. Share your reactions in the comments area beneath this post.
