This article contains spoilers for 9-1-1 season 8, episode 15, “Lab Rats”
9-1-1 actor Kenneth Choi discusses the intense argument he had with co-creator Tim Minear regarding the significant character death. Throughout much of its duration, the first responder series was committed to not killing off major characters. However, this rule was broken during 9-1-1 season 8 episode 15, titled “Lab Rats”. This episode marked the selfless sacrifice of Captain Bobby Nash (played by Peter Krause), who chose to succumb to a deadly virus in order to aid Howard Han (Choi) and his team one last time. Bobby’s final moments were spent helping the 118, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to duty until the very end.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Choi discussed his interaction with Minear when he found out Bobby would perish. Initially, Choi thought Minear was joking due to his humoristic nature, but as revealed in the following quote, Choi persistently opposed the decision until the filming of Bobby’s funeral scene.
What Choi’s Comments Mean For 9-1-1
Bobby May Really Be Gone
Viewers who’ve followed the series 9-1-1 since its debut are finding it tough to accept Bobby’s demise. This is because, prior to the episode “Sick Day”, the show had a pattern where the principal characters seemed invincible. Characters like Eddie (played by Ryan Guzman), Maddie (Jennifer Love Hewitt), Buck (Oliver Stark), Athena (Angela Bassett), Hen (Aisha Hinds), and Christopher (Gavin McHugh) have all faced near-fatal incidents in the past.
As a devoted moviegoer, I’ve always found myself reassured that even when things seem dire for the main characters, they somehow manage to pull through. This show isn’t one to delight in character deaths, and it takes some getting used to. However, there are subtle clues suggesting that Bobby might not be gone for good. The poignant montage during his supposed last moments was set to a track about a man who cheats death to reunite with his spouse. Intriguingly, Stark recently posted a script fragment on Instagram, hinting that Bobby may have been buried alive. But hey, I’m just speculating here!
In interviews, I’ve shared that I drew inspiration from popular culture classics where a character wasn’t as deceased as first thought, such as Star Trek’s “Wrath of Khan.” Contrary to speculation, Choi’s comments hint that Bobby’s death isn’t some intricate plot twist yet to be revealed.
Our Take On Bobby’s Death
I’m Willing To Wait And See
Among a small group, I’m one who finds Bobby’s demise less troubling. The direction the show takes from here and its ability to handle the aftermath meaningfully is yet to be seen. For many fans, the series has never been primarily about the grim realities of everyday death faced by the protagonists. Instead, it’s a quirky, over-the-top production where, in spite of everything, the heroes manage to survive. This change will require some adaptation as we move towards 9-1-1 season 9.
