The esteemed Oscar nominee and iconic figure in Hollywood, known particularly for his action roles, garnered unexpected popularity with his 2013 collaboration alongside another Hollywood legend on a streaming platform. Although the buddy cop action film initially received mixed reviews upon its release, the undeniable charm of Mark Wahlberg and this individual has made it a must-watch for fans of the genre. Evidently, the audience agrees, as they continue to show their interest.
Under the direction of Baltasar Kormákur, the film titled 2 Guns features Denzel Washington as DEA Special Agent Robert “Bobby Beans” Trench and Mark Wahlberg as U.S. Navy Special Operations Petty Officer 1st Class Michael “Stig” Stigman. Other notable cast members include Paula Patton, Bill Paxton, James Marsden, Fred Ward, and Edward James Olmos. This action-packed movie, adapted from a comic book series with the same name, has been generating buzz and climbing up the charts. For more details about the storyline, you can read the official synopsis below.
Over the past year, DEA agent Bobby Trench (played by Denzel Washington) and U.S. Navy intelligence officer Marcus Stigman (Mark Wahlberg) have been secretly working together within a drug syndicate, unbeknownst to each other that they are both undercover agents. However, their mission to infiltrate a Mexican drug cartel and recover millions turns sour. As a result, their superiors disavow them, leaving Trench and Stigman with no choice but to flee to avoid being imprisoned or worse.
How You Feel About ’80s Action Will Determine How You Feel About ‘2 Guns’
Back in the day, I found myself utterly captivated by the movie “2 Guns”. At first glance, its reception was somewhat divided – it garnered 64% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and 66% approval from audiences on Popcornmeter. Reflecting on the reviews now, it appears that either you were smitten with the ’80s-style action throwback and the witty interplay between Wahlberg and Washington, or you simply couldn’t stand it. For me, I fell squarely into the former category!
Odie Henderson from RogerEbert.com gave the movie “2 Guns” a good 3.75, remarking that “Using clichés effectively isn’t bad; it’s like a skilled jazz musician taking you on an unexpected journey to a familiar destination.” In stark contrast, Ben Kenigsberg of AV Club criticized the film heavily, stating that “2 Guns” is “as bland and forgettable as its title suggests.” However, Anthony Quinn of The Independent found himself in a bit of a conundrum, describing the movie as “a time capsule from the 1980s,” yet only gave it a mediocre 2 out of 5. Therefore, whether you love or loathe the ’80s seems to greatly influence your opinion on “2 Guns.
Most recently, Mark Wahlberg assumed a villainous role in Mel Gibson’s movie titled “Flight Risk,” where critics on Rotten Tomatoes criticized his performance. In the near future, he will portray a character previously played by both Mel Gibson and action legend Jason Statham – that of the mysterious Parker – in the crime thriller “Play Dirty.” He is also set to reprise his role for the sequel of “The Family Plan” on Apple TV+. Wahlberg can be seen alongside Paul Walter Hauser, Molly Shannon, Eva De Dominici, Benjamin Bratt, Daniela Melchior, Eric André and Chelsey Crisp in the action-comedy “Balls Up,” directed by Peter Farrelly. Lastly, he will spearhead the long-awaited reboot of the iconic 70s action series “The Six Million Dollar Man.
