As a die-hard Star Wars fan and creator of the Andor series, I’ve shared some exciting moments in a galaxy far, far away, but after wrapping up the show, I’m eager to explore new narrative territories for a while. While I didn’t rule out the possibility of revisiting the Force, it doesn’t seem like I’ll be jumping back into the Star Wars universe anytime soon. Right now, I have another movie in the pre-production phase, and I’m content with my journey through the galaxy so far.
For approximately six years now, Gilroy mentioned, he had been tending to his own section of the garden, having worked on “Rogue” before that. Over the span of 24 episodes, he felt he’s done a commendable job and is eager to explore new opportunities for a change.
Gilroy’s role on Rogue One is somewhat complex to explain because he joined the production late but still made significant impacts. Originally, Chris Weitz wrote the screenplay and Gareth Edwards filmed it before Gilroy came aboard for the reshoot phase. However, during this process, Gilroy served as a writer while also overseeing reshoots under Edwards’ direction as a second-unit director. Despite his extensive contributions behind the scenes, Gilroy was only given credit as a writer and not a director in the final product. Most reports suggest that his $5 million paycheck is a more accurate indication of his influence on the movie’s completion.
Gilroy hopped aboard “Andor” while the series was already being set up. The production had already begun when Gilroy found out about the show’s progress and obtained a script. He shared with Deadline that he wasn’t fond of the portrayal of Cassian Andor, and he voiced his concerns to Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy. Eventually, she invited him to be part of the team, and in the end, he assumed the role of showrunner.
The attention and acclaim that both Rogue One and Andor have received is quite impressive, given they are direct prequels to the highly cherished original Star Wars film, A New Hope. Typically, such productions could provoke discontent among fans by altering established lore. However, director Gilroy skillfully navigated these potential pitfalls, which is a noteworthy accomplishment in the sometimes divisive Star Wars franchise.
It seems we’re approaching what might be the final chapter of Diego Luna’s character in the Star Wars universe, as Andor Season 2 is set to unfold. The new season begins on Tuesday, April 22nd, releasing three episodes at a time each week, and will conclude its run on Tuesday, May 13th, all streaming on Disney+.
