According to past speculation, the potential handheld PlayStation 6 may be capable of running PS5 games, but at reduced resolutions. However, a fresh rumor suggests that the compatibility might extend beyond initial expectations. On NeoGAF forums, a user named Kepler, who correctly predicted the use of RDNA 4 features in the PS5 Pro back in September, has posted that the portable PlayStation 6 could support the PS5 not just in terms of gameplay, but also in terms of the shader binaries it uses.
In essence, theoretically, the game could run smoothly on the rumored console without much developer intervention because the shader binaries are compatible. However, Kepler points out that if left unoptimized, the performance of the game on the portable PS6 might not be optimal. Therefore, it’s likely that developers will need to work on optimizing their games to ensure smooth frame rates on this console.
This aligns with earlier findings suggesting that the anticipated console utilizes a System-on-Chip (SoC) manufactured on a 3 nanometer node, capable of consuming up to 15 watts of power. Though not exceptionally powerful, advancements in contemporary chip manufacturing imply that the SoC should be quite competent. As per Kepler’s assessment, the proposed handheld gaming system’s power will fall within the range of a PS5 and an Xbox Series S.
This implies that the System-on-Chip (SoC) employed in the portable PS6 won’t match the one used in the primary console, as suggested by the report. The SoC for the handheld console has been uniquely developed to operate efficiently at reduced voltages.
Although Sony hasn’t officially announced the development of a new generation of PlayStation consoles yet, a remark they made in 2022 suggests that the console might be released sometime after 2027. This statement was made during Microsoft’s purchase of Activision Blizzard, and it also expressed concerns about not being able to access Call of Duty games on their platforms due to the acquisition at that time.
Historically, Sony had adhered to a five-year console cycle from the debut of the original PlayStation up until the release of the PS3. However, Sony introduced the PS4 in 2013, marking a break from tradition as it was released at the end of an eight-year console generation – the longest at that time. Since then, Sony has maintained this longer cycle, with the PS5 launching approximately eight years after the PS4.
If the whispers about Sony developing a portable gaming device alongside the launch of PS6 for home consoles prove accurate, it would mean that Sony is re-entering the handheld gaming market, having been absent from it for over a decade following the PlayStation Vita’s disappointing sales. The aim would be to recapture the success they had with the PlayStation Portable in this domain, given the intense competition from portable PC gaming systems such as the Steam Deck and Asus ROG Ally, along with other consoles like the rumored Nintendo Switch 2 and whatever project Microsoft is currently working on.
