In Kingdom Come Deliverance 2, not every duel is a fight-to-the-death scenario; some, like those with Menhard von Frankfurt, are more about the thrill of fencing for its own sake. On the other hand, the Kuttenberg Brotherhood takes a different view, and their disagreement lends an air of tension to the Ars Dimicatoria mission.

To get the most out of this quest, be careful about your dialogue choices as they can make it easy to overlook it. However, once you complete it, you’ll gain access to repeatable rewards and beneficial training sessions. Use this Ars Dimicatoria guide to ensure you initiate and finish the quest correctly for optimal results.

At the outset of the quest, Henry needs to overcome challenging speech assessments – this could be through forceful arguments, convincing dialogue, or academic discourse. If he fails any of these tests, the quest will conclude unexpectedly. So, if your speech abilities aren’t strong, it might be best to avoid embarking on this quest.

How to Start Ars Dimicatoria

To start Ars Dimicatoria, make your way to Kuttenberg’s commercial area. In this district, you’ll find a man dressed in vibrant green and red who is inviting combatants.

As I, a dedicated gamer, hereby identify myself as Menhard von Frankfurt, eagerly extending a challenge to none other than Henry. This isn’t about bloodshed, but honor and prestige at stake. To accept my invitation, you must comply with two conditions: first, lay down your armor as per my request; second, gather at least 200 groschen to wager on the outcome. Once you’re all set, the game begins!

Menhard proves to be a formidable adversary, much like many challenging foes in Kingdom Come. To emerge victorious, concentrate on using Master Strikes effectively.

Even as you stand on the brink of victory, city authorities suddenly interfere, charging Menhard with participating in illicit duels – a claim that contradicts his license granted by King Wenceslas.

Making friends with or proving Menhard’s innocence to the guards regarding the law-breaking allegations is your crucial initial step. Once you manage to persuade them, the quest can move forward smoothly.

The Road to Better Standing

Stealing the Kuttenberg Guild’s Sword

Following our resolution, I’ll either head to an inn nestled west of this city or find myself cozying up at Emperor Charles’ tavern within Kuttenberg’s fortifications, depending on how our previous chat panned out.

When you encounter him, he’ll recount his tale and ask Henry to secretly grab the Guild Sword from the Kuttenberg Brotherhood. Later, he intends for Henry to exhibit it at the Town Hall, using it as a provocation.

The Guild Hall can be found in the southwestern part of the city, where it’s hard to miss due to its distinctive red and yellow banners.

Entering via the side door during the day could provide you with a swift and tidy way in, as long as you manage to avoid being noticed.

The Guild Sword is situated on the second floor, mounted on the wall in the central hall. If your abilities in stealth are strong, sneaking the sword at night might be more straightforward because there are fewer people around. Just remember to dress in dark attire and anticipate dealing with challenging locks that stay unlocked during the daytime.

Displaying it in the Town Hall

After obtaining the Guild Sword, make your way to the Town Hall of Kuttenberg, which is situated close to the heart of the city. In case you’re not in Hardcore mode, you can utilize the fast travel option for a speedier journey to the destination.

Immediately upon entering, you’ll find hooks on the wall for hanging your sword. Once it’s securely hung, make your way back to Menhard to proceed with the quest.

As a cunning admirer, I find myself in a strategic position. If a sentinel stands watch at the entrance, my patience pays off. With time, he’ll depart for his rounds, leaving an unguarded moment ripe for stealthily slipping that sword into place unnoticed.

Dueling for Honor

Upon getting back to Menhard, a sequence unfolds showing that the Kuttenberg Brotherhood have found their missing sword.

As a counterpoint, they issue a call to Menhard’s Brotherhood for a competition, with the objective being to decide which faction gets to take the lead in Kuttenberg’s fencing guild.

If you managed to win against Menhard in your first fight, he would promptly welcome Henry into his brotherhood. However, if you lose, a second duel would be necessary for you to gain entry.

You may need to wait 24-48 hours after this cutscene before Menhard triggers the tournament.

The Kuttenberg tournament bears a strong similarity to the Rattay Tourney featured in the initial Kingdom Come: Deliverance game.

In order to emerge victorious, you need to triumph in two out of every three bouts. Unlike Rattay’s battles, these encounters occur without armor, and after each duel, you’ll observe other combatants. During those intervals, you may consume potions, mend your equipment, or even take a dip at the bathhouse—but remember to return promptly for your next bout.

Should you get discovered while secretly exploring the Kuttenberg Brotherhood’s guildhall, it means that the Kuttenberg members would have a minor edge in the tournament by being permitted to don light armor.

When it’s Henry’s chance, move to the yellow corner to initiate your battle. Master Nicholas, his last opponent, is undeniably the toughest. He is exceptionally skilled at parrying and executing Master Moves, so playing defensively and counterattacking seems the wisest choice.

After three in-game days, return to Menhard once he takes control of the Kuttenberg Brotherhood.

In return for your efforts, you’ll have perpetual entry into the guild hall, receive expert fighting instruction from Menhard and Arne, and acquire Master Menhard’s longsword. Additionally, you’ll get to participate in weekly sword-fighting competitions, where you can win attractive prizes and hone your combat abilities further.
