The extraordinarily exciting manga series “Kakegurui,” known for its high stakes gambling, is back again, this time in live-action format. Officially titled “BET,” Netflix has unveiled a new trailer for the live-action adaptation of the popular manga by Homura Kawamoto and Toru Naomura. Following two successful seasons and an anime spin-off called “Kakegurui Twin,”, Netflix’s upcoming live-action series will be available on May 15th, with Boat Rocker Media producing it and Simon Barry serving as the showrunner.
In a departure from the original manga, the upcoming live-action version of the well-known anime and comic series, as confirmed by Netflix and production team, will primarily draw inspiration from it but not entirely follow its storyline. Instead, they’re making slight changes to the narrative and characters. As per Netflix, the official summary for BET reveals that the show revolves around a private school where social status is determined by gambling, with a new student, bearing a tragic past, stirring things up while placing bets on retribution. The series will feature Miku Martineau, Ayo Solanke, Eve Edwards, Clara Alexandrova, Hunter Cardinal, Anwen O’Driscoll, Aviva Mongillo, and Ryan Sutherland in prominent roles.
This New Kakegurui Inspired Adaptation Will Be an Interesting Entry Into the Franchise
It’s understandable that the news of an upcoming “Kakegurui” live-action adaptation being only “partly” based on the source material might raise concerns among anime enthusiasts, particularly those who are already deeply immersed in the world of Kakegurui. It’s important to note that there is already an existing live-action adaptation of the series titled “Kakegurui“, which aims to be a faithful adaptation of the original manga. This 10-episode series is currently streaming on Netflix and retains the same character names and storylines as the manga. In contrast, it appears that the upcoming project called BET will position itself as an entirely new creation, utilizing elements from the original work while aiming to carve out its unique identity among fans.
In spite of some potential concerns about the quality of BET, based on warning signs, it appears that the skilled cast and crew are dedicated to making this series exceptional. The main actress for the project, Miku Martineau, who will portray Yumeko Jabami, expressed her enthusiasm when the series debuted, stating that she’s eager to breathe life into the character. She also mentioned, “I can hardly contain my excitement for the audience to witness BET, a show that embodies the high-stakes and wild essence of Kakegurui, while revealing what truly fuels Yumeko’s obsession.” Similarly, Simon Barry, the showrunner and director of the upcoming Netflix original, drew inspiration from recent hits like Wednesday and Scott Pilgrim for BET. He noted that adapting this live-action series for English-speaking audiences was both an honor and a challenge.
