PS5 Suddenly a Hot Product in Japan, But as a Rental

Sales of PlayStation hardware in Japan have decreased compared to the past, but that doesn’t imply waning enthusiasm for the PS5 or its game library. On the contrary, the market for renting PS5 consoles is thriving.

It appears that the Japanese retailer GEO’s PlayStation 5 rental service has seen higher demand than anticipated, causing a near-total depletion of rental units over the next six weeks. This service, introduced in conjunction with Monster Hunter Rise (a highly successful game series in Japan), is believed to be attracting many Japanese gamers due to its affordable price of approximately 980 yen ($7) for an eight-day access pass to the popular Capcom title.

According to IT Media News reports, a rental service can be found in approximately 400 locations throughout Japan, with each location typically offering around five devices for customer rental.

In recent times, the total sales of the PS5 haven’t outperformed previous PlayStation consoles in terms of initial sales. The most recent Famitsu data indicates that the console has only managed to sell about 5.6 million units in Japan, making it lag behind the Switch Lite by nearly a million units. On the other hand, the standard Nintendo Switch has sold exceptionally well in Japan with over 20 million units, despite having a three-year advantage before the PS5 release. Interestingly, the Switch OLED model was launched a year after the PS5 and it has already sold approximately 8.9 million units.

Although the rental service isn’t an official offering by Sony, it could be seen as an attractive alternative for consumers due to the increasing cost of some PS5 models in specific countries. This rental option might gain popularity among prospective buyers who are finding it challenging to afford the PS5 outright.

In the United Kingdom, it’s possible to lease a PlayStation 5 console for a monthly fee of £11.99, which is part of a 36-month agreement.
