The final match at WrestleMania 41 left me feeling disappointed. Although it boasted several excellent fights over its two-day span, the main event’s conclusion fell flat. John Cena capturing the WWE Championship for the 17th time in his career was a fitting result, but I can hardly wait to see how a genuine heel championship phase for Cena unfolds during the remainder of his career. Nevertheless, the manner in which Cena obtained the title was humiliating and is mostly attributable to The Rock.
Although Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson was absent from WrestleMania 41, his character, the “Final Boss,” instigated the narrative between John Cena and Cody Rhodes. Back in February, The Rock made an unexpected visit to SmackDown and declared his intention to claim Cody Rhodes’ soul. This statement from The Rock was perplexing at the time, and it didn’t become clearer when he appeared at the Elimination Chamber in Toronto, accompanied by rapper Travis Scott. What followed became a viral sensation as Rhodes rejected The Rock, with Cena subsequently turning villainous and allying himself with the Final Boss, seemingly marking the beginning of a new era under the Authority.
Initially, this action was intriguing for several compelling factors. Firstly, it marked the emergence of a heel-like John Cena, a shift long overdue in WWE after many years. Secondly, he was executing this transformation by teaming up with Rock, who used to be one of his formidable rivals. Consequently, it seemed logical that Rock would maintain a significant role in the narrative as Cena moved towards WrestleMania and prepared for his confrontation with Cody. However, things didn’t unfold as expected.
To put it simply, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson hasn’t made an appearance in WWE since the Elimination Chamber event. This means no shows on Raw or SmackDown, and no surprise appearances at WrestleMania this past weekend. Although his actions led to John Cena turning heel and igniting this feud, The Rock has decided to stay away from WWE entirely. This leaves the narrative feeling incomplete, and the main event of WrestleMania, as a result, borders on being a joke.
Instead of witnessing Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s entrance in the climactic scenes of WrestleMania, we were left with Travis Scott reappearing in the ring to complicate Rhodes’ title defense. Despite Scott having no business being part of such a significant WWE moment (let alone twice within a few months), his three-minute walk to the ring halted any momentum that Rhodes and Cena had been developing. In the end, Scott turned out to be nothing more than a distraction that allowed Cena to claim the WWE Championship. However, it’s clear that The Rock would have been more fitting for this role. Not only would this have made the storyline more coherent and concluded the narrative arc, but it would have avoided the questionable decision of inserting someone with no wrestling background into the most prominent WWE event of the year.
Regarding Cena’s victory, I can’t help but feel sorry that it had to happen in such an unusual way. The fact that he won as a heel, with outside assistance, is something I can accept given the change it brings to his usual career trajectory. However, when fans reflect on this event in years to come, it’s likely they’ll wonder why Travis Scott was involved at all. Last night, there wasn’t a satisfactory explanation for this, and I doubt there will be one in the future either.
What’s particularly vexing about Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s recent WWE role is that for the second consecutive year, his actions have disrupted the plans for WrestleMania. In 2024, he unexpectedly demanded a title match against Roman Reigns, a request that WWE initially appeared willing to grant. However, fans strongly opposed this decision, and as a result, Cody got his title shot instead. This unexpected twist made the WrestleMania 40 card much more exciting. Yet, the fact that The Rock instigated this problem once again, so soon before WrestleMania 41, highlights the need for him to step away from WWE.
It’s clear that The Rock has a lot on his plate, with his successful acting career and numerous business ventures. It makes sense that he can’t be everywhere at once. However, if he’s really that busy, it might be best for him to avoid WWE. His occasional appearances as the Final Boss feel disrespectful, not just to the viewers who watch WWE weekly, but also to the talented performers like Rhodes and Cena who are left to deal with the messy setup he leaves behind.
If The Rock doesn’t feel a strong urge to rejoin WWE, put on his wrestling shoes, and engage in a match again, it might be best for him to steer clear of the organization. Previously, fans worldwide would have been thrilled by any appearance from one of WWE’s beloved figures. However, The Rock has recently appeared as nothing more than an egotistical, out-of-touch performer over the past two years. Instead of damaging his in-ring reputation even further, it would be wise for him to avoid active involvement with WWE and focus on his role behind the scenes. Otherwise, he risks receiving a reception similar to Hulk Hogan’s at Raw in January 20 years from now.
