Andrew Garfield has expressed interest in playing Spider-Man again, but it seems he’s eager to explore new stories rather than repeat the old ones. He portrayed Peter Parker/Spider-Man in 2012’s “The Amazing Spider-Man” and 2014’s “The Amazing Spider-Man 2,” but these films were later replaced with a Marvel Cinematic Universe reboot. In 2021, he reappeared as Peter Parker (now known as Peter 3) in “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” alongside Tobey Maguire and Tom Holland’s Spider-Men. Since then, fans have been speculating if Garfield might return to the role of Spider-Man again.
At the Abu Dhabi Comic Con event, Garfield was queried about what could entice him to reprise his role as Spider-Man. Via Comic Book Movie, he expressed his fondness for taking on the character again. However, his primary wish is for an unorthodox comeback, preferring something unusual, out of the ordinary, and shocking. Twice using the term “weird”, Garfield seems to indicate that he’s not interested in a typical Spider-Man movie return. In simpler terms, Garfield wants a unique and surprising opportunity to play Spider-Man once more.
I’d be thrilled to reprise the role under unusual circumstances, as I’m yearning for something truly unusual and distinct. Ideally, I’d prefer an opportunity to explore something quirky, original, and unexpected.
What Does ‘Weird’ Mean When it Comes to Spider-Man
The term “unusual” or “out of the ordinary” as Garfield uses it, is clearly open to interpretation. His remarks may suggest a whisper about his upcoming role in “Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse,” a movie slated for release in June 2027. The delay in its production could be due to its ambitious goal of blending live-action and animation, as seen in films like “Who Framed Roger Rabbit” from 1988, where real-life actors such as Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man are seamlessly integrated into animated worlds. This blend would indeed be surprising and a significant risk for “Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.
It’s being speculated among fans that Andrew Garfield may return as Spider-Man/Peter Parker in the upcoming film Avengers: Secret Wars, which is rumored to take place on Battleworld, a location where multiple Marvel universes are combined into one existence. This merging could enable Garfield’s Spider-Man to coexist with other heroes from the MCU and alternate universe versions. In this merged reality, Garfield’s Spider-Man might reside on Spider Island, as depicted in the comics, or he could portray a distinct version of Peter Parker, such as the 1602 Spider-Man, Peter Parquagh.
In another interpretation, Andrew Garfield could portray an alternate version of Spider-Man, namely The Superior Spider-Man, who is actually Doctor Otto Octavius/Doctor Octopus inhabiting Peter Parker’s body. This would provide Garfield with the opportunity to depict a more villainous side of Peter Parker, aligning with the initially intended darker theme of the The Amazing Spider-Man series. The timing is intriguing as well, since the Superior Spider-Man storyline began in 2012, coinciding with the release of Garfield’s first The Amazing Spider-Man, and concluded in 2014 before The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Despite his denial about appearing in Avengers: Doomsday or Avengers: Secret Wars, after his dishonesty during the press tour prior to Spider-Man: No Way Home, many doubt his claims. The wait continues to see if this will materialize.
