The makers behind the new show “The Assembly” have shared that the reason for its shift from BBC to ITV was due to BBC’s inability to fund an entire season.
In a style reminiscent of a French format, the program features a well-known personality answering queries posed by a diverse group of young individuals, including those on the autism spectrum, neurodivergent, and learning disabled. The ITV description assures that no topic will be off-limits in this engaging interaction.
In April last year, the British edition of the program first aired as a trial run on BBC One and iPlayer during Autism Awareness Week. This special episode featured Welsh actor Michael Sheen as its main subject, who answered questions about his professional and private life.
During an interview with TopMob magazine, Michelle Singer, the executive producer, explained the straightforward cause for The Assembly’s decision to broadcast its initial release on ITV1 and ITVX.
She conceded that the show had received recognition with nominations for awards, which they were indeed proud of. However, at this point in time, they lacked the financial resources to produce it.
ITV has successfully secured popular personalities for its initial broadcast of The Assembly. On the roster, you’ll find David Tennant, who starred alongside Matt Smith in Good Omens, along with former football player Gary Lineker, singer Jade Thirlwall from Little Mix and solo artist, as well as Rivals actor Danny Dyer.
In simpler terms, the executive producer, Singer, mentioned that ITV appreciated the Sheen episode and wanted to preserve both the structure and the core principles (or essence) of The Assembly as it started a fresh phase on their network.
Regarding the underlying objective of our program, my co-executive producer, Stu Richards, refuted accusations that the show might trivialize or find amusement in neurodiversity.

In each episode of The Assembly, as provided by ITV, a famous personality will let go of all they’ve learned from their media advisors and experience an unprecedented, humorous, messy – yet heartwarming – interview.
