In this instance, we find ourselves re-experiencing one of PlayStation history’s most distressing and contentious events, but this time as a TV series. The second episode of The Last of Us Season 2, titled “Through The Valley”, delivered an exhilarating installment that strayed dramatically while remaining true to the original plot. To our surprise, we found ourselves both captivated and repulsed by this episode.
There will be some story spoilers in this review.
Back in 2020 when I first played this game, the part where Ellie and her crew ventured out on patrols as a snowstorm loomed was an absolutely terrifying gaming adventure for me. The tension built up as I knew something was off, and the terror that unfolded made my heart race. This newest episode still delivers pulse-pounding moments, but they’re not where you’d typically find them.
What really impressed us was an assault on Jackson town, where the series truly displayed its large financial resources by featuring swarms of infected, explosions, and massive computer-generated monsters. This portrayal of the infected serves as a stark contrast to other versions of the story, with speeds that rival the speed of the hordes seen in the movie World War Z.
This entire segment was thrilling, as the performances effectively conveyed the terror felt by Jackson’s residents, intensifying the gravity of their predicament. You could sense they were in the thick of it, and this tension kept us riveted from start to finish.
In addition, there’s another significant part of this incident: Abby’s unavoidable encounter with Joel. For those expecting a drastic shift, you may be disappointed. The iconic scene from the game remains largely unchanged, including the golf clubs.
Stepping back from the immediate events for a moment, this element remains a harrowing and pivotal part of Season 2’s narrative. The actors are all delivering exceptional performances. Kaitlyn Dever portrays Abby with intense, emotionally fueled animosity, Pedro Pascal maintains his stoic character, and even the rest of Abby’s team convey their reluctance to carry out the impending actions. It’s hard not to appreciate their work.
Every time I revisit this series, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia for the way it used to be. It’s not just about the actors who originated the roles; it’s the subtle changes and tweaks they’ve made that seem to dilute some of the story’s original power in my eyes.
1. Dina taking Tommy’s former spot during Joel’s confrontation with Abby’s group signifies a shift that significantly affects future events in the story.
2. Abby’s physical appearance in the game is different from what we see now, and this alteration impacts crucial moments later on in the narrative.
3. Instead of acting out her motives for revenge through actions, Abby explains her entire reason during a speech that showcases her villainous side. However, it’s not just the influence these scenes have had so far, but also how they transform pivotal moments later on in the story.
It’s somewhat surprising, given our previous statement about the show excelling when it deviates from the source material, that the recent Jackson incident appears to be following a different path. Instead of enhancing the narrative with intricate details and subtle moments as usual, it seems like these aspects are being streamlined or omitted in an effort to make the storyline more accessible.
As a dedicated fan, one aspect I deeply appreciate about this game is the intricate way it weaves small enigmas into its narrative. Questions like what transpired at Jackson’s dance the night before, who exactly Abby is and why she harbors such animosity towards Joel, and the true motivations driving Ellie – are all mysteries that I find myself pondering. Though not every query has been resolved, a significant number of them have been, which keeps me hooked and eager for more.
Although we’re only a few episodes in, we don’t want to jump to conclusions about HBO’s interpretation of this show. To be honest, we’ve always found it challenging not to feel defensive about elements from the original story that hold significant value for us. Putting our personal feelings aside, this new version is still engaging, suspenseful, and emotionally charged. However, it seems to lack the raw intensity that was present in every aspect of the original.
