Luke Bryan loves the way Katy Perry is letting it shine.
Following the previous judge of “American Idol” embarking on a space journey with Gayle King, Jeff Bezos’ fiancée Lauren Sanchez, and three others aboard a Blue Origin flight, her former coworker expressed his thoughts about this incredible feat and what the “Firework” singer shared with him upon her return to Earth.
Luke expressed his initial reaction to learning that she would be leaving by saying, “Wow, that’s amazing you get to go,” to TopMob News before the American Idol Top 14 show on April 21. However, upon her safe return, he exclaimed, “Oh my god, wow. Awesome.
As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but share my excitement when I tell you about my interaction with the talented lady behind “Country Girl.” You see, for seven seasons, I had the privilege of working alongside this amazing artist on that popular reality singing series. Recently, I was thrilled to learn that she had returned to our planet and even got a brief text message from her! It’s moments like these that remind me why I am so obsessed with her talent and artistry.
He mentioned that he’d like to know her account of it,” he clarified. “All she said was, ‘It was just absolutely wild.’ She didn’t provide much additional information. However, I’m just relieved everyone got home safely.” (For more updates from Luke and the rest of the American Idol cast, catch TopMob News tonight, April 22, at 11 p.m.)
Although Luke wasn’t eager to depart from Earth’s atmosphere, he was fully immersed in the journey, which included the participation of Aisha Brown, Amanda Nguyen, and Kerianne Flynn. In his own words, “I found myself utterly captivated by the experience.
At the same time, Katy’s ex-colleagues from American Idol shared the same sense of pride – but they weren’t eager to reenact her epic space journey right away.
Ryan Seacrest expressed his immense joy, saying, “I’m incredibly glad she accomplished it and returned safely.” He added, “She’s more courageous than I am.
Carrie Underwood, taking over from Katy for Season 23, teamed up with Artist in Residence Jelly Roll, described her time as “incredible” and “awesome”, yet confessed, “I’m comfortable staying down-to-earth.
Regarding Lionel Richie, who joined American Idol in 2018, he made it clear that he would not venture into space even if it was a matter of life and death. However, he believes that Katy Perry would find the space journey exhilarating.
When she mentioned she was heading to space, he responded, “Go ahead and soar,” he added. “As for me, I’ll remain earthbound.” He didn’t offer any suggestions because, well, you know Katy. She follows her own path. However, I’d like to make this clear: I’m staying put. I told her, “I’ll be here waiting,” and true to form, she returned. Godspeed, indeed!

Established by Amazon’s Jeff Bezos in 2000, Blue Origin operates as a private space corporation based in Kent, Washington. As stated on their official site, the mission of this organization is twofold: to utilize space resources for Earth’s benefit and expand human presence in space through enhanced transportation means and development of living and working destinations within low Earth orbit.
Blue Origin is pursuing these objectives by constructing reusable rockets and engines with the aim of decreasing the expense of space travel, making it more affordable for civilians, and promoting sustainability. During a 2016 Pathfinder Awards talk, Bezos expressed their vision: “We aspire to have millions of people living and working in space.” The focus is on lowering the cost of space travel by emphasizing reusability.
Although Blue Origin does not publicize ticket prices on its website, it does require a $150,000 deposit for potential customers.
Known after astronaut Alan Shepard, who made history as the first American to journey into space in 1961, New Shepard is what Blue Origin refers to as a “completely reusable, suborbital rocket system designed for human travel.”
Six individuals can fit inside New Shepard’s pressurized crew capsule. However, you won’t find a pilot seat because, according to Blue Origin’s website, “The vehicle operates autonomously—there are no pilots.”
New Shepard debuted in 2015 as part of a test flight program consisting of 16 successful tests, which were all completed by 2021.
In July of that year, Bezos and his brother Mark joined New Shepard for its inaugural human flight, along with an auction winner who paid a staggering $28 million for a seat. Later in the same year, William Shatner and Michael Strahan were among the passengers who boarded the vehicle (though they were on different missions).
The upcoming journey will mark New Shepard’s 31st mission (hence the name NS-31) and its 11th human flight.
The New Shepard mission (NS-31) by Blue Origin is planning to take off from Launch Site One, situated amidst the Guadalupe Mountain range in the West Texas desert. According to their website, the launch window commences at 8:30 a.m., Central Daylight Time, on April 14th.
According to Blue Origin’s website, their astronauts blast off towards space traveling over three times faster than sound. They surpass the Kármán line, which is an internationally recognized boundary of space located approximately 62 miles or 100 km above Earth. Once they pass this point, they can unbuckle and experience weightlessness while marveling at our planet. Eventually, the crew descends back to Earth safely under parachutes. The entire journey lasts roughly 11 minutes.
The team for mission NS-31 comprises singer Katy Perry, CBS Mornings host Gayle King, film producer Kerianne Flynn, STEMBoard founder Aisha Bowe (formerly a NASA rocket scientist), bioastronautics research scientist and activist Amanda Nguyen, and former TV anchor Lauren Sanchez. Notably, this marks the first all-female spaceflight crew since 1963 when Valentina Tereshkova from the Soviet Union embarked on a solo mission, making her the first woman to journey into space.
Nguyen is set to make history as the first Vietnamese woman to travel in space, while Bowe will be etched in history books as the first person of Bahamian descent to venture where only a select few have gone before.
As part of this extraordinary mission, each one of us has our unique motivations for being a part of this incredible journey. For me, it’s about inspiring the next generation, especially my daughter with Orlando Bloom, Daisy, to dream big and break free from any limitations that society might impose. I want her to see that anyone, regardless of their background, ethnicity, socio-economic status, or educational level, can achieve their dreams.
In line with this, King, who has been candid about her apprehensions, aims to encourage people to step out of their comfort zones and explore new horizons. She believes that once we take the first step, doors will open for many others who might have hesitated but now find themselves emboldened to join us.
King’s words resonate deeply with me, as I too share a similar sentiment. For Nguyen, this is an opportunity to realize a “dream deferred.” After years of working at NASA and studying astrophysics at Harvard and MIT, life intervened, and gender-based violence became a significant obstacle in my pursuit of my dreams in STEM. As a sexual assault survivor, I traded my telescope for fighting for my rights and drafting the Sexual Assault Survivors’ Bill of Rights, which was passed in Congress and at the United Nations. After a decade-long struggle, I am now ready to honor the person I was before I was hurt by being part of this remarkable mission.
As reported by Good Morning America, every team member is scheduled to travel to the launch site prior to the mission, where they’ll undergo training workshops. These sessions will involve getting tailored for their flight suits, familiarizing themselves with the spacecraft, learning effective communication methods with ground control, and reviewing safety guidelines.
Although the crew as a whole has been preparing for the mission, some individuals have taken independent steps to ready themselves beforehand. For instance, Bowe has been ramping up his training over the past year, recently increasing the intensity. He completed a NASTAR simulation to simulate the flight conditions and is eagerly awaiting a fighter jet ride. Flynn too mentioned that she underwent several zero-gravity simulation flights, where a Boeing 747 is flown in a parabolic pattern for passengers to experience weightlessness. She also participated in NASTAR training in Philadelphia and endured up to five Gs of pressure.
Here are a few people preparing for their space missions:
– Nancy Conrad, wife of the third man to walk on the moon, Pete Conrad, is a mentor to Bowe. She has asked Bowe to carry an Apollo 12 flag with her on the mission.
– Bowe will also be taking plant samples from Winston-Salem State University’s Astrobotany Lab and dehydrated conch chowder as a tribute to The Bahamas.
– Nguyen has personal items she plans to take: shells from the island her mother is a refugee from, and a promise she made to herself after her assault. This promise was written on a piece of paper that she kept with her during her hospital stay, graduation, and as she fought for her rights. She will also be bringing the pen used by former president Barack Obama to sign the Sexual Assault Survivors’ Act, a Nguyen dynasty coin, and Freetown cotton tree seeds.
– Bowe is taking an Apollo 12 flag, plant samples, and Bahamian food on her mission.

Stars have sent encouraging messages to the crew; among them, Tom Hanks, Megan Rapinoe, Bill Nye, and Drew Barrymore created a farewell video for King that was broadcast on CBS Mornings. The Charlie’s Angels actress expressed excitement about picking the crew’s brains once they return home.
On the other hand, some celebrities like Olivia Munn have voiced criticism. On Today with Jenna & Friends on April 3, she questioned the purpose of the mission, stating that there are more pressing issues in the world and that the cost of space travel could be used to help those in need. She also pointed out that it’s expensive for people to go to space, while some can hardly afford basic necessities like eggs.
Olivia Munn also questioned the significance of the mission, saying that it seems self-indulgent. However, King acknowledges the criticism regarding billionaire Bezos and the perception that this mission is merely an advertisement for Blue Origin. She explained that while she understands the concerns, in her view, the mission transcends individual interests and companies. She believes that one can engage in both this endeavor and other important activities simultaneously.
