*Warning – contains major spoilers for The Last of Us season 2 episode 2, Through the Valley*
Viewers are still shocked by the impactful second episode of The Last of Us season 2, as it vividly recreated a pivotal scene straight from the video game.
In the closing scene of the episode, Kaitlyn Dever’s character Abby was seen inflicting severe torture on Pedro Pascal’s character Joel, eventually leading to his death.

The final part of the episode depicted Kaitlyn Dever as Abby, mercilessly tormenting and ultimately killing Pedro Pascal’s character Joel.
In a sense, Ellie, the girl Joel had come to think of as his own, portrayed by Bella Ramsey, made an effort to rescue him. However, she ended up merely observing as his life came to an end instead.
Currently, Craig Mazin, a co-creator of the series, has disclosed an extra element within the plot that intensified its emotional impact on him.
During a conversation on The Last of Us Podcast on HBO, Mazin expressed that the scene which touched him deeply was when Joel, covered in blood and bruises, struggled to move even as Ellie urged him to rise after he fell.

Mazin expressed his deep sadness, saying, “It’s truly painful to me.” He explained this pain arises from witnessing the depth of a parent’s love for their child – a feeling that children are unaware of due to their lack of experience.
People often say, “When you have a child, you truly understand,” and many respond with, “I believe I can imagine.” However, this isn’t accurate. It’s something you can only experience firsthand. I, myself, didn’t grasp it until I went through it. And that deep, parental, desperate love… well, you can’t fully understand it until you feel it yourself.
1. “He’s making an effort to recover for her, despite being completely immobile. As for Bella, she’s doing a multitude of things, and they’re all raw and deeply touching.”
2. “He’s struggling to regain strength for her, yet he can barely budge. What Bella does here is a spectrum of actions, and it’s incredibly poignant.”
3. “He’s striving to get back on his feet for her, but he’s practically paralyzed. The way Bella behaves in this situation is a wide array of actions, and it’s painfully sincere.”
4. “He’s working hard to recover for her, but he’s as good as frozen. What Bella does here covers the whole gamut, and it’s heart-wrenchingly authentic.”
5. “He’s pushing himself to get up for her, but he’s almost stationary. The things Bella does in this scene span a broad spectrum, and they’re gut-wrenchingly genuine.”
Lately, Pascal shared insights about the reactions of the team when they first saw him in his grisly portrayal of Joel, stating that this was an experience unlike any other he’s had before.
It’s as if they were asking, “‘Is there something intensely sad about me?’ This kind of sorrow seemed to swallow everyone’s expression in their eyes.
The Last of Us season 2 airs on Sky Atlantic and NOW in the UK and HBO in the US.
