Actress Sydney Sweeney reveals she’s collaborating with a renowned filmmaker on an unanticipated motion picture based on a video game, set in the realm of Hollywood.
Given the tremendous success of Warner Bros’ blockbuster “A Minecraft Movie,” which shattered domestic box office records by earning an opening of $163 million – the highest ever for a film based on a video game, surpassing Universal’s $146 million opening for their Mario movie – Universal is making a comeback in the competitive world of video game adaptations. They are enlisting these prominent figures from the industry to help them navigate this market sector.
As a gaming enthusiast, it’s not exactly unexpected to see video games reclaiming their moment under the cultural limelight once more, with the big screen giving them a second chance. Just look at The Last of Us returning for its season 2 premiere, and Nintendo revealing plans for a live-action Legend of Zelda film set to hit theaters in 2027! It’s an exciting time to be a fan!
The movie is going to be based on the original Sega arcade racing game, OutRun, which first came out in 1986 and was a massive global success. Its groundbreaking graphics and iconic electronic soundtrack have created an enduring legacy that continues to captivate fans.
From its initial release, OutRun has established itself as a cornerstone series for Sega, sparking multiple arcade spin-offs and sequels before eventually gracing home consoles like the Sega Mega Drive. More recently, in 2019, it also appeared on the Nintendo Switch for the first time.
Based on Universal’s past success with video game adaptations – such as The Super Mario Bros Movie and Five Nights at Freddy’s, which raked in a combined global box office of $1.4 billion and $290 million in 2023 – it seems the studio is far from done exploring the potential of the gaming industry.
Although specifics about the movie’s narrative remain undisclosed, Sydney Sweeney has officially signed on as a producer. However, her potential acting role in the film remains uncertain. She has, however, shared updates about the project on her Instagram story, thereby verifying its authenticity.
Beyond her fame as an actor on Euphoria, she’s also made a name for herself behind the scenes by producing the romantic comedy “Anyone But You,” released in 2023, and the horror movie “Immaculate” from last year. Notably, she starred in both of these productions as well.
Michael Bay, renowned for his big-budget, action-filled movies like the Transformers series, is slated to both direct and produce the upcoming film. Alongside him will be Brad Fuller, producing under their joint production company Platinum Dunes, established in 2001.
The project’s development is being supervised by Toru Nakahara from Sega, a veteran in the Sonic the Hedgehog movie series, and Shuji Utsumi, who serves as the CEO for both Sega America and Sega Europe.
As more information about the movie becomes available, we’ll make sure to share it with both the audience and enthusiasts of OutRun.
For now, it is exciting to speculate where Bay and Sweeney will take this treasured gaming classic.
