Samuel L. Jackson’s Mace Windu May Be Making a Shocking Star Wars Comeback!

The festivities are far from concluded, as we approach May – marking 20 years since Mace Windu‘s fall from the window in “Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith” (2005). This event saw the demise of the Jedi Master wielding a purple lightsaber, Samuel L. Jackson, who was disarmed by fellow Jedi Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen) and subsequently killed by Chancellor Palpatine’s Sith lightning. Or perhaps not? For nearly a decade, Jackson has maintained that Mace Windu survives – his death, after all, was not shown on screen. This intriguing theory has also been brought up by Bryce Dallas Howard in discussions with Lucasfilm executive vice president and chief creative officer Dave Filoni.

Speaking about her co-star Sam Jackson on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Howard expressed that he has been extremely encouraging towards her and frequently mentioned his willingness to act in a project she directs. This, according to her, is equivalent to saying “I’m not deserving,” essentially.

Previously, Howard – known for directing episodes of the live-action Star Wars series such as The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, and Skeleton Crew – directly approached Dave Filoni and inquired, “Shall we discuss Mace Windu? I’d love to know more about his current status. Can we delve into this topic?”

She then posed the question, “Is he deceased? Or is there still life in him?

The actors who starred alongside Jackson in the Star Wars prequel trilogy have made a comeback to the galaxy distant: McDiarmid resumed his character as the Emperor in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (2019), Ewan McGregor reappeared as Obi-Wan in the 2022 Disney+ series, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Christensen was seen in both Anakin and Darth Vader roles within Obi-Wan and Ahsoka (and is set to return in Ahsoka season 2).

Indeed, he is still [alive]. Jedi can survive even after falling from great heights,” Jackson stated to Entertainment Weekly in 2016. “And there’s a rich tradition of one-handed Jedi. So why not?” The actor further shared that the series creator, George Lucas (who sold Lucasfilm to Disney in 2012), approved Jackson’s plan to rewrite Windu’s death in ‘Revenge of the Sith’.

George no longer plays any role in Star Wars, as stated earlier. He seems content with this arrangement and has expressed, “Feel free to carry on.

Currently, Disney has been exploring stories about Mace Windu that happened prior to his seeming demise in “Sith”. For instance, a five-issue Marvel comic series titled “Star Wars: Mace Windu”, released in 2017, was placed between the occurrences of “The Phantom Menace” and “Attack of the Clones”. Another prequel to this prequel, scheduled for release in 2024, takes place just before the emergence of the Separatists and the start of the Clone Wars.

Mace Windu is included in the newly debuted Marvel’s “Star Wars: Jedi Knights” comic series, penned by Marc Guggenheim (of “Star Wars: Yoda”) and illustrated by Madibek Musabekov (“Marvel’s Star Wars”).
