Why the Empire Wants Ghorman (Shocking!)

*Warning: Spoilers ahead for Andor season 2 episodes 1-3.*

Stepping into the theater once more, I found myself utterly gripped by the ominous unfolding of events in the second season of Andor. The chilling scenes have subtly suggested a catastrophic future for the planet Ghorman, stripping away the veneer of the Empire’s benevolence, leaving only its cold-hearted evil exposed in the early episodes.

As a die-hard movie enthusiast, I can’t help but share some exciting news about “Season 2” – Tony Gilroy, the mastermind behind its creation, has hinted at the inclusion of the Ghorman massacre in our upcoming storyline!

He clarified to Collider that there is some ambiguity surrounding the Ghorman Massacre, with people questioning exactly what incident the term refers to. This confusion exists within established lore.

This situation presents a substantial chance to construct something truly impactful and versatile across multiple episodes. It’s an essential aspect of our series that offers numerous possibilities for us. To be frank, it’s quite costly to create, so we aim to maximize its use in order to make the most out of it over five separate episodes.

I’m quite certain that the extremely dedicated Star Wars fanbase will admire our efforts in clarifying the storyline.

What does the Empire want with Ghorman in Andor season 2?

In the second season, the ominous character played by Ben Mendelsohn, Orson Krennic, reappears. He assembles a clandestine team of Imperial Security Bureau (ISB) agents and strictly forbids any documentation or records, maintaining a confined and secretive circle.

He emphasizes that Ghorman holds significant importance for the Empire, sharing information about the valuable mineral known as kalkite found there and explaining its crucial role in the Emperor’s energy projects.

Indeed, the mining of kalkite is bound to bring about significant difficulties for the approximately 800,000 residents of Ghorman. Krennic warns that there could be catastrophic consequences, potentially leading to the complete destruction of their planet.

Krennic presents two gentlemen hailing from the Ministry of Knowledge, who indicate a defamatory strategy concerning the Ghor.

However, it is Dedra Meero (Denise Gough) who proposes an intriguing idea: “Why not recruit trustworthy rebels to carry out the unjust deeds?” This action appears to lead towards the tragic event known as the Ghorman Massacre.

What is the Ghorman Massacre in Star Wars?

Gilroy notes that there seems to be some misunderstanding regarding the nature of the Ghorman massacre. In essence, it is often described as a brutal assault by Imperial troops on unarmed demonstrators who were peacefully protesting in Ghorman during 2BBY.

The centerpiece of the assault was Moff Tarkin, who descended onto a crowd of thousands of unarmed protesters with his spacecraft, resulting in their deaths.

Or

Moff Tarkin orchestrated the main part of the attack by landing his spaceship on a peaceful gathering of thousands, causing fatalities among them.

Following the atrocity, Mon Mothma (Genevieve O’Reilly) openly accused Emperor Palpatine for the incident and presented the Declaration of the Rebel Alliance. This declaration helped to mend the divisions within the rebel factions and inspired them to intensify their battle against the Empire.
