Jack Black has swiftly emerged as the leading star of choice for Hollywood’s big-screen video game adaptations, with films like “A Minecraft Movie” and “The Super Mario Bros. Movie“. Over the past few years, he’s made a name for himself in this new realm of video game movies. Given his well-known passion for gaming, it’s not unexpected that he’s found a place in the world of game adaptations. Black’s band Tenacious D even has a song about adult gaming addiction called “Video Games”, and he runs a YouTube channel dedicated to gaming named JablinskiGames.
Black has stepped into the world of video games, starring in movie adaptations based on popular titles like Brütal Legend and Jumanji. In these roles, he’s given unique touches to characters such as Bowser and Steve from Minecraft, who initially had less defined personalities. Among his video game movies, which one is the best?
Black has moved into starring in movie adaptations of popular video games like Brütal Legend and Jumanji. He’s added his own style to characters such as Bowser and Steve from Minecraft, who weren’t very character-driven initially. Out of all of Black’s video game movies, which one is the best?
3. Borderlands
The film adaptation of “Borderlands” stands out as Black’s most disappointing video game movie. Unlike some films that are enjoyable due to their over-the-top badness, this one lacks even that appeal. It’s simply poor; it attempts to blend action and comedy, but the action is predictable and the jokes are stale. The “Borderlands” games are famous for their graphic violence and irreverent humor, elements that were entirely missing in this PG-13 rated movie. This results in a loss of shock value, leaving the film feeling dull and uninteresting. Eli Roth’s direction in “Borderlands” is his worst work yet, considering his less than perfect resume, which speaks volumes about the quality of this production.
This production faced numerous challenges behind the scenes; it was made during the pandemic, necessitating extensive reshoots, and went under two different directors with contrasting styles. Despite its moments of excellence, this movie is essentially a copycat of Guardians of the Galaxy. Jack Black delivers a commendable performance as Claptrap, but Kevin Hart’s portrayal of a stoic gunslinger feels misplaced, and Cate Blanchett’s role as an action hero is disappointingly generic. With a mere 10% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, it seems even that score might be too generous.
2. A Minecraft Movie
The latest film adaptation of Black’s video game, titled “A Minecraft Movie“, has surprisingly taken the world by storm. Many scenes from “A Minecraft Movie” have gained widespread attention online, and the audience responses have grown so passionate that law enforcement has been summoned to some viewings of the film. It’s challenging to label “A Minecraft Movie” as a great movie. It delivers just enough for storytelling and character development, and its plot is quite predictable. However, it unquestionably provides a lot of enjoyment with plenty of humor.
In the game, Steve is merely a standard character, yet in the film, Black gives him a rich and vibrant personality. Together with his co-star Jason Momoa, Black brings an infectious enthusiasm to A Minecraft Movie. Even those who have never touched Minecraft, like myself, can find enjoyment from this movie because of the charisma displayed by Black and Momoa. The comedic scene of Jack Black on a flying Jason Momoa is more than enough to justify the ticket price.
1. The Super Mario Bros. Movie
Among all film adaptations of Black’s video games, “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” stands out as the one that holds together most effectively as a standalone movie. It’s an enjoyable family-friendly adventure about a plumber who gets whisked into a vibrant fantasy realm and teams up to combat evil. The film maintains a brisk, engaging pace, delivers a well-structured three-act narrative that satisfies, and Black’s portrayal of Bowser is exceptional. Despite being clearly the antagonist, Black imbues him with a quirky innocence that makes him surprisingly endearing.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie truly delights audiences, not in a disruptive way that makes moviegoers toss popcorn and creates chaos for theater staff. Instead, it’s a film that families can enjoy together, with lots of laughter, memorable characters, stunning visuals, and catchy tunes from the soundtrack. Among all the movies based on video games that Jack Black has been in, The Super Mario Bros. Movie stands out as the finest.
