Nintendo Switch 2 Pre-Orders Surpass 2.2 Million in Japan, President Apologises for Shortages

As we approach the June 5 launch of the Nintendo Switch 2, the company has been sharing some intriguing figures about pre-orders for the system via social media platform X. In a recent post, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa disclosed that an impressive 2.2 million customers in Japan have already placed pre-orders for the console.

As a passionate fan eagerly awaiting the Switch 2, I was thrilled to learn that pre-orders had surpassed the company’s predictions. However, I must share my disappointment when Furukawa expressed his apologies for the fact that many of us who pre-ordered won’t be receiving our consoles on launch day. For those who might not know, pre-orders in Japan were conducted through a lottery system, where fans like me could register our interest via the My Nintendo Store to stand a chance at getting a launch-day Switch 2.

On April 2nd, we revealed the specifics of the Nintendo Switch 2 and initiated lottery applications on our My Nintendo Store. This move led to an overwhelming response, with over 2.2 million applicants from Japan alone. Unfortunately, this number far surpassed our initial predictions and outnumbers the amount of Nintendo Switch 2 units we can distribute via the My Nintendo Store on June 5th. As a result, it is sad to say that we expect a substantial number of customers will not be chosen for tomorrow’s lottery results, which will be announced on April 24th.

If you registered for the lottery but don’t receive a Switch 2 due to supply limitations, there’s no need to reapply. Furukawa has mentioned that the My Nintendo Store will automatically keep your lottery entry for a future chance, should you not be selected for the initial Switch 2 launch.

He explained that those who weren’t chosen in the initial lottery drawing wouldn’t need to reapply as they would automatically be entered into the second lottery. Yet, he noted that even with the increased number of items available in the second sale, it might not be possible to accommodate all the applications we’ve received. He expressed his sincere apologies for falling short of your expectations, despite our best efforts to prepare accordingly.

Starting from April 24, Nintendo plans to make it possible for customers to pre-order the upcoming Switch 2 model through various retailers and online platforms. If you’re eager to secure one, you can register your interest in advance. Some stores may opt for a lottery system to ensure fair access for everyone. Additionally, Furukawa mentioned that Nintendo is increasing the production of the Switch 2 to cater to the anticipated demand in the future.

Additionally, we intend to manufacture and deliver many Nintendo Switch 2 systems in the future,” he stated. “We deeply regret any inconvenience caused by this delay and appreciate your patience.

The date for the launch of Switch 2 has been revealed in a special broadcast focused on the console, which took place recently this month. Notably, the game “Mario Kart World” is planned to be released simultaneously with the console, serving as its debut title.
