The Star Wars Celebration was jam-packed with fresh information about upcoming shows, such as season 2 of Ahsoka and the broader Star Wars universe. Filming for the sequel to 2023’s Ahsoka has just started, while projects like The Mandalorian & Grogu are set to move popular small-screen characters to IMAX cinemas. It seems that the universe George Lucas brought to life is brimming with exciting developments. Additionally, Lucasfilm Animation is preparing to unveil a new series titled Maul: Shadow Lord, delving deeper into the life of its beloved title character.
Specifically, Ahsoka Tano experienced some major plot twists. A significant revelation was that Anakin Skywalker, played by Hayden Christensen, would reappear in season 2 of Ahsoka. Moreover, it was announced that Rosario Dawson’s portrayal of Ahsoka would interact with the live-action counterparts from Star Wars Rebels, and even Admiral Ackbar would join the struggle against Grand Admiral Thrawn.
At Star Wars Celebration 2025, Ash Crossan from ScreenRant had a chat with Rosario Dawson (Ahsoka), showrunner Dave Filoni, and executive producer Jon Favreau regarding season 2 of Ahsoka. They shared thoughts on the influence behind Dave Filoni’s concept art and their efforts to depict the epic showdown between Admiral Ackbar and Grand Admiral Thrawn from the Expanded Universe. Additionally, they hinted at some exciting developments for Ahsoka and her Rebels comrades in the upcoming season.
Rosario Dawson Geeks Out About Star Wars As Much As Anyone Would
She Shares Her Reaction To Dave Filoni’s Concept Art To Fully-Realized Sets
As a fan of “Star Wars”, it’s invigorating to learn that those controlling the galaxy share the same enthusiasm for new ventures as everyone else, and it appears that Rosario Dawson is particularly ecstatic about it. The actor expressed her feelings by saying, “What we adore most, at its core, is what makes it so vibrant.” She was referring to the excitement of viewing Dave Filoni’s concept art, an experience that was even more exciting for her because she hadn’t yet seen the studio sets during the time of the interview.
In both the studio setting or otherwise, Dawson exhibits the same enthusiasm as any typical “Star Wars” fan might. She elaborated, “We conducted a war room walkthrough,” she explained, “and I get thrilled. They’re merely panels with switches, but it was me and Natasha [Liu Bordizzo] playing with every single thing. It’s so exhilarating.” Despite not having read all the scripts for season 2 of Ahsoka yet – “We still don’t even know how it concludes,” she admitted – she did express her delight at being able to delve deeper into what was established in the first season.
Expect More Of The Rebels Crew, Especially Ahsoka & Ezra
“You’re About To See Quite A Lot Of Them”
One standout feature in the first season of Ahsoka was the transition of Dave Filoni’s animated series characters, including Star Wars: Rebels’ Ezra Bridger, into live-action. The appearance of Ezra Bridger, portrayed by Eman Esfandi in Ahsoka, generated a lot of anticipation as the post-Star Wars: Rebels destiny of this character remained unknown. Speaking about season 2, Dawson expressed his excitement saying, “We’ll get to see more of both Ahsoka and Ezra.
Dawson commented, “That moment was highly anticipated by the fans, culminating in their silent reunion from a distance in the final episode. I found it intriguing that so many people were focused on not seeing them hug. Rest assured, you’ll soon witness much more of their interaction.
Dave Filoni shared his thoughts on the anticipated Ahsoka-Ezra hug: “It wasn’t essential, but the moment was so powerful between them. We filmed it very early on, and I found it amazing. I appreciated how the editors structured it to create a mirrored symmetry as Ezra approaches Ahsoka, then cuts to Sabine walking towards Ahsoka, giving a sense of parallelism. Jon [Favreau] is aware of my affinity for such visual storytelling elements.” Filoni also hinted at more such heartfelt moments to come.
For the showrunner of Ahsoka, transitioning characters such as Ezra from animation to live-action hasn’t felt like a drastic change compared to his previous work: “To be honest, I don’t see much difference when I was working on Rebels. They still feel like the same characters to me. You just express them in a slightly different manner. It’s quite fascinating to see them back again.
According to Filoni, the characters from Rebels might reunite in the future, as they are currently scattered across different parts of the series. Ahsoka, for instance, is in a separate galaxy at the moment, and it’s something they need to sort out. However, he finds it exciting and it underscores how exceptional these characters are, as they each have a dedicated fanbase. The animated series was unique, and Filoni believes that they’ve successfully adapted these characters into live action.
Admiral Ackbar’s Expanded Universe Role Is Realized In Ahsoka Season 2
“There Are Certain Pillars That I Like To Stick To”
In the old Star Wars lore known as the Expanded Universe, numerous tales heavily featured Admiral Ackbar’s exceptional military skills. Although Thrawn and Ackbar didn’t engage in a fleet battle directly in Timothy Zahn’s 1991 novel “Heir to the Empire”, according to Dave Filoni, it was strongly suggested that Ackbar commanded the New Republic fleet during that period, with Thrawn serving as his primary adversary.
In his own words, Filoni explains his approach to Star Wars history: “I’ve always been drawn to its core elements – despite the changes and updates over time, there are foundational aspects I prefer to maintain.” He further adds, “Introducing Thrawn into this era isn’t an original idea of mine. It’s simply a part of Star Wars that has always existed. My desire is to witness it come to life. There’s a bit of self-indulgence involved – I want it to happen.
It turned out that Ackbar had a free slot in his calendar, which enabled us to include him in the upcoming episode. This was quite challenging due to scheduling issues.
Ahsoka Season 2’s Loth-Kittens Are A Whole New World Of Cute
“It’s Another Level”
In the early episodes of season 2 for the character Ahsoka, we were introduced to Loth-kittens – these are the tiny versions of the real-life Loth-cats from Star Wars Rebels. However, Dave Filoni affectionately refers to them as “Loth-balls”. In 2025, they will make their live-action debut.
Rosario Dawson gushed, “I simply adore them! They’re so charming, I can hardly wait.” She continued, “And they come in various colors! Remember the Loth-cat from the first season? It was a massive hit among us all. And the whole crew was absolutely thrilled.
“My dog loved it,” said Favreau.
Dawson also admired the animatronics of the Loth-cat from the first season: “[It had] the growling, [the fur], you could even see him breathing… everything was simply amazing. So to witness the Loth-globes, the Loth-kittens… it’s a whole new league.
