This beloved Oblivion meme got remade 7 years later, proving Oblivion Remastered preserves the timeless comedy of the original

Back in 2006, The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion from Bethesda was met with instant success due to its vast open-world setting, numerous intriguing quests, and multiple options for character customization through magic, melee combat, and archery. What set it apart from other games of the time was these unique features. However, this fantasy RPG also gained a reputation for its unintentionally amusing quirks, with players finding humor in awkward dialogues between non-player characters, strange NPC behaviors, offbeat voice acting, and peculiar physics glitches, among other things.

For decades, fans have cherished the 20-year-old game title with a deep affection, leading to countless memes inspired by amusing clips of Oblivion moments on YouTube channels such as Bacon_. Given this history, I approached the unexpected release of Oblivion Remastered this week with some apprehension, worrying that the developers Bethesda and Virtuos Games might attempt to “refine” the unintentional humor that made the original so enjoyable.

Within just a few hours of its release, it became clear that while Oblivion Remastered has significantly enhanced the visuals and mechanics of the classic RPG, it hasn’t lost any of its amusing peculiarities. A quick glance at the current top posts from the Oblivion subreddit will confirm this, but my personal favorite example is a classic meme from Bacon_, who recreated it seven years later using the new remaster.

The video initially uploaded in early 2018, which now boasts an impressive 18 million views on YouTube, showcases a spontaneous scene from the original game Oblivion. In this scene, a Non-Player Character (NPC) acting as a thief confronts the player, steals 100 Gold from them. However, when the player attempts to take back the stolen money, the NPC behaves strangely, showing no reaction, stating that the money is worthless to him anyway.

It’s a sidesplitting scene that flawlessly demonstrates how absurdly unintelligent the game was, which is why I couldn’t help but be delighted when Bacon_ managed to replicate the sequence identically in the fresh remake – not just the interaction, but even the exact location on the map. Oblivion Remastered showcases stunning Unreal Engine 5 graphics and refined, less choppy combat, but in essence, it preserves the original game’s spirit and essence.

At the moment of writing, Bacon has recreated another meme they previously made: an updated version of a clip featuring Rena Bruiant expressing her love for dogs, followed almost instantly by her husband aggressively attacking one of their pets. To be fair, the earlier video’s “YEEHAUGH!” war cry was more impactful than the less intense “Hough!” in the recent one.

The high degree of fidelity Oblivion Remastered maintains with the original game is probably a significant factor behind its current success, as it essentially represents a fresh take on The Elder Scrolls series for many young gamers. At this moment, the game is garnering significant attention on Steam and can also be played on Xbox and PC platforms (excluding PS5 through Xbox Game Pass). Its suggested retail price is $49.99, but it’s worth mentioning that you can secure the Steam version for only $41.49 at Fanatical.
