Latest PS5 Firmware Update Available Starting Today, Brings Back Classic Console Themes

On Thursday, April 24th, 2025 at 9 am, Sony started releasing a new PS5 software update, labeled as version 25.03-11.20.00. This update is approximately 1.3 GB in file size.

In the UK, it’s currently accessible to us, but due to a gradual distribution strategy, it might take some time before you receive it, as they’re rolling it out to users in stages.

Yesterday, it was announced that the recent update incorporates two new features for the console: firstly, an audio focus function which enables customized sound adjustments through specialized presets; secondly, a collection of vintage console themes remastered from PlayStation’s 30th anniversary event.

Here are the official patch notes for PS5’s new system software update:

  • We’ve added audio focus, a feature that supports broader accessibility and allows players to hear quiet in-game sounds and voice chat more clearly.
    • When audio focus is turned on, specific frequencies of quieter sounds are amplified, making car engines, footsteps, in-game character voices, and voice chat clearer. Multiple presets are available to enhance specific frequency ranges.
    • To use audio focus, go to Settings > Sound > Volume > Audio Focus and turn on Use Audio Focus.
    • This feature is only available when using headphones.
  • You can now select a design inspired by your favourite PlayStation console generation and apply it to your home screen and other areas.
    • To apply a design, go to the home screen and select Settings > System > Appearance > Appearance and Sound.
  • We’ve improved system software performance and stability.

As a dedicated gamer, I’m thrilled to share some exciting news! Sony, my trusted gaming companion, has just announced that they’re bringing back the classic console themes in an upcoming update for the PS5. Can’t wait to customize my dashboard again!

In honor of PlayStation’s 30th anniversary, limited-time UIs featuring designs from the PS1, PS2, PS3, and PS4 were introduced. Given the strong public interest, these classic themes are now slated for a comeback in the near future.

On Sony’s PlayStation Blog, it’s announced that the new PS5 system software will become accessible from April 24th, 2025. The release will unfold in stages around the world, meaning you might have to wait a bit before others, but rest assured, the update will reach everyone eventually.

Individuals looking to switch UI themes can locate them by navigating to Settings, then System, followed by Appearance and Sound.

It’s uncertain whether the classic PS1 startup sequence will make a comeback, or if they are just discussing the potential return of the system’s themes.

The firmware update will also introduce a new feature called audio focus, when using headphones.

Here’s how Sony describes it:

Enhancing your immersion with audio, custom presets boost subtle sounds according to your hearing needs. This results in a more distinct listening experience when utilizing headphones or headsets. This functionality promotes greater accessibility in the realm of audio experiences.

Activating the audio focus feature allows you to select among several settings that enhance specific sounds within a game, like dialogues, soft sound cues, or party chats, making them clearer for you to listen to.

The presets are:

  • Boost Low Pitch: Amplify low-frequency sounds like roaring engines and rumbling noises.
  • Boost Voices: Amplify voice chats, character voices, and other middle-frequency sounds.
  • Boost High Pitch: Amplify high-frequency sounds like footsteps and metallic noises.
  • Boost Quiet Sounds: Amplify low-volume sounds in a wide range of frequencies.

Additionally, you can independently control the balance between the left and right audio channels, as well as decide the intensity of the preset effects applied.

The update is planned for release on Thursday, 24th April, and it’s going to be distributed gradually. Can’t wait for the next PS5 firmware update? Share your thoughts with us in the comment section!
