Warning: This story contains spoilers from the You season five finale.
In the end, only a Brontë could take down the literary lover that is Joe Goldberg.
In Netflix’s fifth season of “You”, airing on April 24, we finally uncover the destiny of the serial killer, who has left a trail of victims in New York, Los Angeles, Silicon Valley, and London after cold-blooded murder sprees involving numerous lovers and their acquaintances.
In the final episode, Joe (Penn Badgley) made an attempt to escape towards Canada after a fire in his bookstore nearly took his life, with his wife Kate Galvin (Charlotte Ritchie) joining forces with former victims Nadia (Amy-Leigh Hickman) and Marienne (Tati Gabrielle) to ensnare him within a trap, symbolized by his glass prison.
In addition to their actions, they successfully persuaded Joe’s muse, Louise Flannery, also known as Brontë (Madeline Brewer), that he indeed was the murderer she had suspected after Guinevere Beck (Elizabeth Lail) was killed in season one. They managed to turn her against him.
In the end, Brontë managed to save Joe from the fire at Mooney’s bookstore, which marked the beginning of her long-term plan to finally put an end to his schemes. Interestingly, when Joe asked for her hand in marriage, her thoughts revealed her hidden reason for accepting – “I am the only one who can halt your plans.
After they had run away to upstate New York, Brontë started thinking about a way to provide you with the conclusion you deserved.
In a confrontation deep within the woods, Joe aggressively moved towards Brontë, firing a shot that struck her side. A struggle ensued between them, but Brontë was able to dial 911 for help. As law enforcement approached the couple, Joe implored Brontë to end his life.
He said to her, “End my life. I’ve earned it. You can do it, I know your capabilities. Please, deep down, there’s a part of you that resembles me more than you care to acknowledge. This is the conclusion of our tale, Brontë – you will be the one to take my life.
Brontë refused, saying she’d rather see him spend the rest of his life alone in prison.
Reflecting on this for quite some time, I’ve come to understand it more vividly now – “The allure of someone such as yourself serves as our means of navigating the harshness presented by someone like you.
He leapt at her and she shot his penis off, before both were carted away by police.
They entered a small wooden house for an overnight stay, and Brontë momentarily considered living blissfully with Joe during what she described as the most romantic boat trip of her life at night.
However, instead of succumbing to sleep, she retrieved a firearm concealed behind the cushions and compelled Joe to disclose the truth about Beck’s fate, as well as to delete from Beck’s posthumous work all sections penned by him.
During her questioning, there was a momentary pause as Joe received a call from his son Henry. In the call, Henry blamed Joe for attempting to harm his mother Kate and referred to him as the real “fiend” hiding beneath his bed.
Joe was overwhelmed by the accusation, crying out, “I hold such deep affection for him. Could it be that he deserves more than what I can offer? What happened? How did I end up like this?
Additionally, it was found that his wife, Kate, miraculously emerged from the fire and underwent a transformation, devoting herself to enhancing Marienne’s artistic career. Meanwhile, her brother, Griffin Matthews, converted Lockwood Corp into a charitable organization.
In the closing moments, Joe was confined in prison, engrossed in “The Executioner’s Song,” penned by Norman Mailer.
Reflecting on the situation, I find myself facing a solitude far more profound than I had ever anticipated. The sheer emptiness, oh, it’s almost unbearable. The thought of being unheld, knowing that this is eternal, feels unfair. It’s as if all this weight has been placed squarely on my shoulders. But isn’t everyone shaped by their surroundings? Wounded individuals often inflict pain. Alas, I seem to have started from a disadvantageous position.
However, when the scene switched to Joe reading a fan letter, he commented, “Perhaps there’s an issue within our society that needs addressing. Perhaps it’s time for us to mend what’s faulty among us. Perhaps the problem doesn’t lie with me, but with you.
In the forest, a struggle ensued between Joe and Brontë after Joe attacked her, wounding her with a gunshot to the side. Overpowered by fear or desperation, Brontë dialed 911 for help. As law enforcement officers approached the couple, Joe pleaded with Brontë to end his life instead.
He said to her, “End my life. I’ve earned it. You can do it, deep down you possess that capability. Please, more than you might acknowledge, we’re alike in many ways. This is how our tale concludes, Brontë. It’s you who gets to end it for me.
Brontë refused, saying she’d rather see him spend the rest of his life alone in prison.
She said, “For quite some time, I’ve been wondering ‘What’s the reason?’ Now, it’s finally become clear to me,” and she continued, “The way we deal with someone like you is through the imagination of such a person.
He leapt at her and she shot his penis off, before both were carted away by police.
Following the violent incident, it was determined in court that Joe had taken the lives of his wife Love Quinn (played by Victoria Pedretti), Beck, along with Beck’s companions Benji (Lou Taylor Pucci) and Peach (Shay Mitchell).
Eventually, Brontë concluded by saying that Joe Goldberg had come to understand his true self fully. The trial was chaotic, the proof gruesome, and the reality inescapable. It’s probably because I unintentionally transformed him into an ongoing punchline for the public.
Brontë summed up the situation by stating that Joe Goldberg finally understood himself completely. The trial was a confusing mess, the proof shocking, and the facts undeniable. It’s likely that the reason the public turned against him is because I unwittingly made him into a recurring joke.
The outcome further indicated that his spouse, Kate, managed to survive the fire and underwent a transformation, devoting herself to enhancing Marienne’s artistic career. Meanwhile, her brother Teddy (Griffin Matthews) converted Lockwood Corp into a charitable organization.
In the closing moments, Joe found himself serving out his sentence in prison, engrossed in “The Executioner’s Song,” penned by Norman Mailer.
In the end, his punishment turned out to be more severe than he had ever expected. The loneliness, oh dear, the loneliness. He voiced these words with a heavy heart. “I’m never going to be held,” he said, knowing this state of solitude was eternal. It seemed unjust. Laying all this burden upon him. Isn’t everyone merely shaped by their surroundings? Wounded individuals often inflict pain. I never had a fair chance.
However, when the scene switched to Joe reading a fan letter, he commented, “Perhaps there’s an issue in our society that needs addressing. Could it be that we need to mend ourselves? Might the flaw not lie with me, but with you?
