Michael Bay & Sydney Sweeney’s OutRun Movie: Fast Cars or Flawed Adaptation?

As a movie enthusiast who’s always on the lookout for exciting adaptations, I can’t help but get amped up about the upcoming video game movies! The unexpected team-up of Michael Bay, famed for his Transformers franchise, and Sydney Sweeney, star of Euphoria, has piqued my interest. If you haven’t heard yet, they are collaborating to bring OutRun, a beloved arcade racer, to life on the silver screen in the not-so-distant future. Can’t wait to see what they’ll cook up!

I’m thrilled about the upcoming Sega video game movie adaptation, eager to explore its universe, yet I must confess I’m cautiously optimistic. On one side, the games’ fast-paced action and vibrant visuals make them ideal for a film, but on the other, there are aspects that cause me concern. Let’s delve into it!

Michael Bay and Sydney Sweeney Are Both Obsessed With Cars, And That Has Me Excited For OutRun

Initially, upon learning Deadline’s news about Bay directing an OutRun film (and producing alongside Sweeney), I instantly felt it was a fitting choice for him to create a movie centered around cars, given his history of producing films like Bad Boys, The Rock, and Ambulance, which either showcase spectacular classic cars, exhilarating car chases, or both. In other words, we can expect jaw-dropping race scenes when watching this movie. This man’s passion for cars seems to rival even that for the JFK assassination, as evident in his work.

Beyond being a highly sought-after actress at present, Sweeney can also be described as an automotive enthusiast, or colloquially known as a gearhead. Her passion for everything automotive is evident through her 2023 Ford campaign, her experience racing a NASCAR car in 2024, and even her role in The Rolling Stones’ “Angry” music video a few years back. To add to this, she spends her free time restoring vintage Ford Broncos. In summary, she has a deep affection for cars.

Great Racing Video Game Adaptations Are Few And Far Between

Despite an abundance of excellent video game films over the past decade, adaptations of racing games for the big screen remain scarce. For instance, the 2023 release of Gran Turismo was acclaimed worldwide for its inspiring sports underdog narrative and exhilarating race scenes; however, it deviated from the traditional structure of a video game movie by being largely based on a true story.

The 2014 film version of “Need for Speed,” based on the popular racing game, doesn’t share the same success as the original. Despite earning $203 million at the box office according to BoxOffice Mojo, the movie was widely panned and didn’t capture the thrill and enthusiasm of the game. I have concerns that just like with “Gran Turismo,” we could be looking at a potential hit, but there’s also a strong possibility of another “Need for Speed”-like disappointment.

I Hope This Changes, But Sydney Sweeney Isn’t Attached To Star In The OutRun Movie

Currently, Sweeny is just credited as a producer for the film “OutRun,” and there’s no confirmation she’ll star in it. However, I’m eagerly hoping that this will change during the project’s progression. I believe Sweeny is an ideal choice to star in a movie about cross-country racing, especially if her character takes on the role of the driver (which was traditionally male) while Glen Powell, her co-star from “Anyone But You,” plays the passenger.

I suppose I’ll need to wait and observe what Michael Bay and Sydney Sweeney are preparing for us. For now, I intend to seek out a nearby arcade where I can play some good old _OutRun_ and spend a few coins.
