Actress Julia Garner reveals she spent considerable time with Joseph Quinn during the filming of “The Fantastic Four: First Steps,” which could offer clues about the movie’s plot development. In this much-awaited production, Garner portrays Shalla-Bal, the Silver Surfer, while Quinn plays Johnny Storm, the Human Torch. Given that both characters can fly and have special effects requiring motion-capture filming, it’s reasonable they would spend a lot of time together. However, there’s also speculation this could be a sign of things to come in the storyline. There’s even a possibility we might witness a blossoming romance between these two characters.
As a passionate cinephile, I’ve spent numerous days alongside Joseph Quinn – a man so delightful that he leaves an indelible mark. I can’t help but marvel at his exceptional talent in this production, as I shared my thoughts with Entertainment Weekly during a recent interview. While I collaborated with all four members of the Fantastic Four ensemble, it’s my time spent working with Quinn that truly stands out for me.
In the comic books, there’s never been a romantic relationship between Shalla-Bal and Johnny Storm. However, the Marvel Cinematic Universe often strays from comic book lore. Introducing a romantic subplot for Shalla-Bal and Johnny in this film could add depth to the story, particularly if they are attempting to connect with the Silver Surfer on an emotional level and soften her cold demeanor. Originally created by Stan Lee as a devoted lover and partner to Norrin Radd (Silver Surfer), this romantic element could be adapted for Shalla-Bal’s interaction with Johnny in the movie.
In the same interview, Garner disclosed that she delved into comics starring Shalla-Bal and gained a better understanding of the 1960s era in order to feel knowledgeable about the film’s unique setting. The film First Steps, set within an alternate reality of the MCU, boasts a retro-futuristic aesthetic reminiscent of the 60s. Since it’s unlikely that characters from the primary timeline will appear, this fresh cast must captivate audiences throughout the entire storyline.
Indeed, Garner and Quinn’s interactions in the movie are plausibly explained by the practical requirements of their roles, as both characters are heavily reliant on Computer-Generated Imagery (CGI). Since they had to perform in motion-capture suits, it’s reasonable to assume that they shared the same filming space and equipment. This circumstance might have led them to spend more time together on set. However, this doesn’t rule out the potential for a deeper connection between the two characters. The shared circumstances provide enough logic to fuel some intriguing speculations.
Given that Johnny is the only character capable of flight, it seems logical that he would engage in lengthy conversations with the Silver Surfer. After all, we’ve already witnessed him pursuing her and seizing her board in the trailer.
As a passionate movie enthusiast, I can’t help but get excited about the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) stories. While there’s speculation about whether Garner’s character might ignite a romance within the MCU, only time will tell as we eagerly await the unfolding of the plot. Mark your calendars! “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” is set to hit theaters on July 25th. Before that, don’t miss the premiere of “Thunderbolts” on May 2nd. Enjoy the journey, fellow cinephiles!
