Ryan Reynolds Learned a Valuable Lesson from Green Lantern

In 2011 during the production of “Green Lantern”, Ryan Reynolds discovered an invaluable lesson: focusing on character development rather than spectacle. This was something he emphasized when speaking at the 2025 Time 100 Summit, where he discussed his Hollywood career and entrepreneurial endeavors. On a panel titled “Business of Creativity” alongside Eliana Dockterman, Reynolds acknowledged that the experience from “Green Lantern” played a significant role in shaping his portrayal of Deadpool within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Unlike his usual humorous approach, Reynolds spoke candidly about the DC film without any self-deprecating humor or comic timing. It’s evident that he didn’t achieve his status as a staple of the superhero genre by chance.

As a cinephile, I can’t help but express my profound insights gained from the film “Green Lantern”. This production offered me invaluable lessons in creativity. During its production, I witnessed an incredible amount of resources poured into special effects and various aspects. A memory that stands out is when I proposed, “Why don’t we consider writing a scene as if people were actually talking? It could be an engaging dialogue exchange, and the best part is, it wouldn’t require additional costs!

Reynolds emphasized that it was here where he deeply understood the concept that captivating special effects and impressive set pieces can never compensate for genuine characters and compelling narratives – a sentiment often summarized as “character over spectacle.” Moreover, he asserted, “The most powerful ability I’ve ever possessed in my life, not only regarding my career or any other aspect, was knowing who I truly am.

As a passionate film enthusiast, I found myself captivated during the panel discussion where Reynolds predominantly delved into the business aspects of his production company, Maximum Effort, and its connection with various projects. Towards the end, Dockterman posed an intriguing question: Could Deadpool potentially make a cameo in a future MCU collaboration? Reynolds responded cryptically, stating “I do,” before briefly discussing the production of Deadpool & Wolverine following the Disney-Fox merger.

He clarified that the entire film served as a symbolic representation of Disney acquiring Fox, having proposed 18 different movie ideas to them. He expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to narrate a story and witness characters like those created with Wesley Snipes, who deserved a fitting conclusion in this particular instance… The sense of awe that ensued… It’s a sensation I crave more of. And I believe I could continue to evoke such feelings by taking on supporting roles in future projects.

Besides the hint he dropped earlier, Reynolds also mentioned casually that he’s working on a small project featuring a group of talented individuals, which could potentially revolve around Deadpool if we’re lucky. However, it could simply be a reference to a different, non-Deadpool related project under Maximum Effort.

Currently, all three of Reynolds’ Deadpool films are available for streaming on Disney+, whereas Green Lantern can be found on Max. As for Deadpool, there’s no news about its return to the screen just yet, but it seems that Reynolds and Marvel may not have finished exploring the character altogether.
