Many viewers would likely concur that the original “Black Panther” film ranks among the top Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) movies thus far. Although “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” didn’t quite match its predecessor’s success, it still stands out as one of the better-performing films amidst a series of relatively underwhelming box office hits. Consequently, fans were eager when they learned that Ryan Coogler was involved with “Black Panther 3,” but it remains uncertain how enthusiastic he himself is about the project.
Currently basking in the limelight after the triumph of “Sinners”, Coogler is expressing a preference for creating additional original films instead of revisiting “Black Panther”. This sentiment was shared during an interview with The Atlantic, where he also acknowledged his desire to work on another Black Panther movie. However, his words suggest a stronger inclination towards unique, fresh projects, as expressed:
“While I’d love to return to the world of ‘Black Panther’, my heart is yearning for more original stories and projects.
Since not everyone can accomplish this task, I feel a sense of obligation as well. Admittedly, I aspire to create another Panther film, but the artists who inspire me most in cinema are those who excel at creating original blockbusters. They continually advance the medium by doing so, and if their work resonates with audiences and they see value in my contributions, I could potentially join their ranks.
As a follower, I acknowledge that Coogler expresses a sense of duty or obligation in creating Black Panther 3, which might not equate to eagerness or desire. If this movie were helmed by another director, there would undeniably be a wave of apprehension among fans, wondering about the kind of film they’d be seeing.
As of now, Black Panther 3 isn’t officially confirmed as a movie by Marvel Studios. The fact that there might be plans for it stems from Denzel Washington sharing that he has discussed a possible role in the film with director Ryan Coogler.
There’s often a conflict in Hollywood between fresh ideas and established franchises. Some filmmakers prefer to avoid franchises, while others are drawn to them. Coogler states that his role models typically create larger-scale original films, and he makes it clear he aspires to join this circle.
It’s not necessarily out of reach to accomplish both tasks, as one mighty director who fits Coogler’s description could be Christopher Nolan. This filmmaker is renowned for creating “epic original films,” but he’s also tackled the Batman franchise, demonstrating that a blend of large-scale originals and popular franchises can indeed be achieved.
Given the impressive performance of “Sinners” thus far, it’s highly probable that Ryan Coogler will get the opportunity to produce more unique films. Any studio would jump at the chance to replicate the success of a film like “Sinners”, especially considering its relatively low production cost compared to typical major franchise blockbusters. If Ryan Coogler is keen on directing “Black Panther 3”, I wish him well. Ultimately, as long as he’s creating films that he’s passionate about, cinema-goers will be the ultimate beneficiaries.
