Hey fellow cinema enthusiasts! If you’ve missed out, the recent chapter of Batman comics is a highly anticipated reunion between the legendary duo Jeph Loeb and Jim Lee. They last worked together over two decades ago on the iconic “Batman: Hush” storyline, and now they’re back with a sequel titled “H2SH.” The tale is only two issues deep, but it’s already causing quite a stir with the challenges it’s throwing at Batman and his allies. Thomas Elliot is making his return, aiming to cause some damage in Batman’s life, though we’re yet to learn exactly how. What we do know is that he’s not shy about using Batman’s closest friends as pawns to inflict pain.
As a devoted fan, I must say that the stunning turn of events unfolded in issue #159 left me utterly stunned! This time, it was none other than Batman who found himself locked in a fierce battle with his very own son, the Red Hood. Their bond had been mended, with Jason willingly giving up his life to thwart Failsafe and Zur-En-Arrh. Amazingly, they’ve even teamed up in the latest “Batman and Robin” arc! However, this storyline has unfortunately caused a rift between them once more, culminating in an intense showdown where Batman was forced to use one of Jason’s firearms against him.
Why Did Batman Break His Rule?
Initially, Hush’s enigmatic partner Silence employed his unique talents to apprehend the Joker. Later, Hush utilized his exceptional surgical expertise to perform a critical operation on the Joker, ensuring that he would succumb to bleeding within approximately a day without medical care and keeping his mouth agape. Batman eventually traced the Joker, who was left at his own deserted amusement park hideout, and was compelled to transport him to Leslie Thompkins’s clinic to prevent his enemy from dying. Once patched up by Leslie, she warned that the Joker would require ongoing care, but Batman understood that admitting his adversary to a hospital would be lethal for him. Consequently, he transferred the Joker to the Batcave instead.
Bruce seized the opportunity to scrutinize the Joker, realizing he had no discernible fingerprints or toe prints. He pondered over how he was determined to rescue the man he loathed the most. Coincidentally, Red Hood emerged and pointed a gun at both Batman and the Joker. This sparked an intense fight between father and son, with Jason shouting that sparing the Joker’s life equated to the greatest betrayal. In a swift move, Jason managed to gain an advantage, forcing Batman to grab one of Jason’s guns and fire it at his helmet, knowing it would momentarily incapacitate him.
In the end of their confrontation, Jason and Bruce found themselves in a stalemate, each brandishing a gun at the other. However, Jason was certain Bruce wouldn’t shoot under any circumstances where it could cost him his life. Eventually, Jason succeeded in knocking Bruce unconscious. Upon awakening, Batman discovered that both the Joker and Red Hood had vanished. Since he had earlier cut off communication with the entire Bat Family due to his suspicions about Hush possibly compromising them, Batman realized that only someone working with Hush could have tipped off Red Hood about the Joker’s whereabouts. Meanwhile, the revamped Riddler made his way into Oracle’s Clocktower and suggested that if Barbara Gordon (Oracle) and Nightwing hoped to stay alive, they would require his assistance.
What Does This Mean for Batman?
It appears clear that the current storyline featuring Batman is veering in an unexpected direction for fans, as Batman’s use of a firearm, which is uncommon and startling, is particularly striking given his decision to use it against his own son. The fact that he has always been portrayed as someone who would never kill or allow others to die underscores this shock, yet it still leaves fans feeling dismayed. Batman’s aversion to guns is profound, and the ease with which Bruce resorts to using the weapon that took his parents’ lives in such a situation seems unsettlingly convenient. In fact, it seems far too easy. The image of Batman and Red Hood pointing guns at each other will undoubtedly spark widespread discussion on the internet and may be misinterpreted out of context. To be honest, even understanding the context wouldn’t provide much comfort. Under no circumstances should Batman use a gun.
From what we’ve observed thus far, the storyline appears to put Batman against certain members of his Bat Family, which seems unusual given that he recently had a confrontation with them in the “Gotham War” not too long ago. The previous encounter didn’t work well, and there’s a chance it won’t here either. In essence, these first two issues mirror the oddity portrayed in that panel of Red Hood and Batman. It feels strange and disconnected from the established narrative of the world around it. This story seems more fitting for a script penned 20 years ago, as its character depiction doesn’t align with who they are now. We’ll have to watch how Hush guides Batman through this journey on his quest to bring an end to this crusade.
