You

Warning: This story contains spoilers from the You season five finale.

Hello, karma.

Following the conclusion of serial killer Joe Goldberg’s storyline in season 5 of ‘You’, actor Penn Badgley shared thoughts on his character’s fitting end in the series finale.

He stated to Entertainment Weekly during an interview on April 24th that everything conceivably feasible is being handled effectively. He feels that the character has reached his fitting conclusion. However, he added that no ending could ever fully satisfy everyone since justice for a figure like Joe isn’t inherently fulfilling in itself.

Simply put, “He’s an abuser. He’s a killer. He’s a bad person.”

Following five seasons of Joe eliminating individuals he perceived as hindrances in his warped pursuit of love, such as ex-girlfriend Guinevere Beck (Elizabeth Lail), her friend Peach Salinger (Shay Mitchell), and his spouse Love Quinn (Victoria Pedretti), his arrest occurs due to the intervention of his latest girlfriend, Louise Flannery, also known as Brontë (Madeline Brewer).

In a surprising turn of events, an armed Brontë, who had previously saved him from a fire at Mooney’s, resisted his pleas to kill him during a physical confrontation, even though his wife Kate (Charlotte Ritchie), along with Nadia (Amy-Leigh Hickman) and Marienne (Tati Gabrielle), had attempted to murder him. Instead of complying, Brontë shot off Joe’s penis. Penn feels that the true pleasure from Joe’s imprisonment, rather than his death in his notorious glass cell, will only be fully realized over time.

He stated, “Given that we’re dealing with a genuine person, a genuine incident, and actual victims, what can genuinely mend and fulfill is simply time, provided that justice has been upheld. In the instance of Joe, justice has indeed been administered.

The harm sustained by Joe on his private areas can, in a sense, mark the conclusion of his journey, since the shopkeeper’s violent acts typically started with a romantic partner.

He perceives the bedroom as a mental space: he holds a unique perspective on himself as a hunter, denying his predatory nature. It’s crucial, I believe, that his demise doesn’t occur in a confined space, contrary to what many may anticipate. Instead, it starts in bed, in a state of being undressed, where for the first time, one gets the sense of him actively participating, and one hopes it doesn’t transpire.

To put it another way, Penn clarified to Tudum that Joe is so deeply enamored with the idea of love that he would prefer death over imprisonment. This is because he understands that there’s no realistic situation in which he could experience the life and love he has imagined.

He shared with the media, “I believed it effectively stripped him of his power and dismantled him, which was crucial. His influence came from being a renowned romantic sex symbol, enabling him to continue for such a long time. Therefore, I was pleased with the outcome.
