Inuyasha stands out as a timeless anime, evoking nostalgia for me and many others who eagerly awaited each new episode each week, hoping to uncover if or when the Jewel of Four Souls would be fully restored. Naturally, any series invites criticism in one way or another. In the case of Inuyasha, Kagome was not immune to this scrutiny. Being the only character aside from Kikyo who can sense jewel shards, Kagome plays a vital role in the main cast’s quest to locate every fragment. She’s not a flawless character – no one is – but her imperfections align well with her character.
In the captivating world of Inuyasha, I find myself embodying Kagome, the compelling female protagonist. As the reborn embodiment of Kikyo, whose body was imbued with the Jewel of Four Souls, I carry this enigmatic artifact within me since birth. This extraordinary gem serves as the impetus for my exhilarating journey; its power is potent enough to whisk me away through time, propelling me into a sealed well on our family’s sacred shrine. This inadvertent act unleashes a demon trapped within, and simultaneously transports me back to the enchanting feudal era – marking the commencement of the enthralling tale that unfolds in Inuyasha.
Kagome’s Attitude Fits Her Position
The anime “Inuyasha” begins on Kagome’s 15th birthday, a detail worth remembering because Kagome often receives criticism for being annoying. However, she’s just a regular teenager thrust into a struggle between good and evil that dates back around 500 years. I can’t help but reflect on my own teenage years, and I can confidently say that I wouldn’t have managed the situation as gracefully as Kagome does. Frankly, I doubt I would have even emerged from the well when I arrived in the feudal era. The idea of battling demons at that point? Absolutely not.
In light of that situation, Kagome’s character transformation is striking; she becomes a courageous girl, willing to tackle the perilous mission of reassembling the Jewel of Four Souls, not just because she contributed to its fragmentation initially, but also because she believes it’s morally right. For an adult, such a commitment is significant, yet Kagome, as a teenager, takes on this responsibility with determination. Given her upbringing in the future and the conveniences it offers, it’s understandable that she can be frustrating at times when adjusting to life in the past. However, considering her bravery and resilience, I believe these occasional annoyances are worth enduring.
Could Kagome’s Character Be Improved?
In a potential new take on the original series, Kagome’s character could evolve in interesting ways. For instance, she might possess a stronger command over her priestess abilities as the reborn Kikyo or exhibit a more refined demeanor when interacting with Inuyasha. However, it’s not that Kagome‘s character needs improvement; rather, it stems from forgetting that she is a teenager, which can create unrealistic expectations. If anything, a more practical outfit for fighting demons and adventuring might be an appealing change.
Rather than continuing to judge Kagome harshly, it’s more appropriate now to acknowledge that she was quite resilient given her age during the series. Considering she’s a teenager, her responses to the extraordinary events are surprisingly mature. Her jealousy towards Inuyasha and Kikyo is understandable, as it’s a complex emotion often associated with crushes, particularly when the object of your affection still harbors feelings for someone else – in this case, someone who was also you in a previous life.
A compelling fictional persona ought to possess imperfections. When a character lacks flaws, they become difficult to identify with, making the narrative less captivating overall. It’s essential for both character growth and fostering emotional connections between characters and viewers to observe characters grappling with their shortcomings and pressing on despite fear. While not every character is skillfully crafted, leading to valid criticisms, Kagome isn’t one of those cases. She may not be perfect, but she’s a teenager facing extraordinary situations and coping better than many teenagers would under similar circumstances.
