Deleted Scenes Reveal Doctor Who’s New Companion’s Secret Past

Viewers are still not familiar with companion Belinda Chandra, as she has appeared in just two episodes of the series so far. However, there might be some deleted scenes that provide more insight into her background.

The character has been well-received thus far, as she shows an unusual approach to time travel and doesn’t immediately fall under the Doctor’s charm like her predecessor, Millie Gibson’s Ruby Sunday did. However, it seems that creator Russell T Davies had planned a different path for Belinda, elements of which were ultimately cut during production.

He shared everything in a recent edition of “Doctor Who Magazine,” as he had originally planned a different start for Belinda, which would have begun on the day of her birth with her mother, Lakshmi, and Aunty Devika. However, these scenes were not included in the final version, according to Davis’s writing.

The showrunner added, “They didn’t make it through the initial cut. It’s quite straightforward, actually: a tale centering on Belinda receiving a star named after her should begin with that very event taking place. It seems so clear once you notice it.” Sometimes, the obvious can be hard to see until it’s right in front of us.

Doctor Who” occasionally puts out deleted scenes, so Davies hinted that they might surface sometime in the future. He expressed optimism, saying, “‘These missing scenes are worth waiting for! I’m confident they’ll be featured in an upcoming Doctor Who Magazine issue and hopefully released soon,’” he stated. Regarding who will portray Belinda’s mother and aunt, Davies didn’t disclose their identities, but there’s a possibility that these characters could make an appearance in the season finale if the Doctor successfully brings Belinda back to a safe Earth.

Russell T. Davies Brought Family Life Into Doctor Who

Before the 2005 revival of “Doctor Who,” the companions of the Doctor typically didn’t have family members appearing on the show. However, Russell T Davies broke this trend with the introduction of Billie Piper’s character Rose Tyler. He gave her a mother (played by Camille Coduri as Jackie Tyler) and a deceased father. Some of the most praised scenes from that first season were those involving Rose’s interactions with her parents, including instances where time travel was involved.

As a child, Ruby was deserted and often pondered about her origins alongside the Doctor. This was a question that also puzzled the Doctor, given his origin had been altered following the “Timeless Child” storyline. Later on, Ruby learned that the woman who abandoned her was simply a distressed individual, prompting her to spend more time with this person. However, we can expect Ruby’s return in future episodes of Doctor Who, and it is likely she will encounter Belinda Chandra during that time.
