In our anticipation, the return of Sam Hanna (LL Cool J) to NCIS provided us with a glimpse into the lives of other characters within the NCIS universe. Additionally, we uncovered something unique about Sam that may not have been revealed had he not been featured in the 22nd season episode of NCIS. Despite my disappointment over the cancellation of NCIS: Hawai’i, I can’t help but see a silver lining for fans of Sam.
The news about Sam revealed his decision to part ways from NCIS following the conclusion of the NCIS: Hawai’i series. Nevertheless, Director Leon Vance (Rocky Carroll) has expressed that there will always be a place for him within the NCIS organization somewhere. However, Sam seemed more affected by the end of the NCIS spinoff than many anticipated, and the show’s cancellation saved us from experiencing it with him.
NCIS Season 22, Episode 18 Reveals That Sam Has Left The Agency
The Grief Was Too Much For Sam Hanna
In the 18th episode of season 22 on NCIS, Vance met up with Sam and hinted that there was a position open within NCIS if he chose to return. This revelation suggested not only that Sam had left the team but also tied in with the conclusion of the fourth series within the NCIS universe. As they continued their conversation, Vance explained that Sam’s departure stemmed from losing his original team.
In the final scenes of NCIS: Hawai’i, Sam appeared to be thriving. He was grinning broadly and seemed deeply invested in the Hawaiian squad, his Ohana. Given his past, having lost numerous comrades while serving in the Marines and NCIS, it came as a bit of a shock that he had stepped down because of the disbanding of this specific team.
The final episode of NCIS: Hawai’i season 3 didn’t fully explore his grief. This might be because there was limited time since the series concluded, or it could have been a deliberate decision for a potential fourth season. Ultimately, the entire storyline concerning his grief was resolved off-camera.
NCIS: Hawai’i Getting Canceled Spared Viewers Watching Sam Leaving The Agency
It’s Always Hard To Watch A Character We Love Grieve
If the Hawaii-based series had persisted, it would’ve resulted in additional episodes featuring Sam Hanna and his trials. Though this might have delighted fans of the character, it also signified more scenes where we’d witness him grappling with grief. Seeing our beloved characters experience sorrow is never easy because it stirs similar feelings within us. We empathize so deeply that we feel their pain, wishing we could console them through the screen. Such an emotional scenario would have been evident in Sam’s case given his character and past losses he has already experienced.
Thanks to the cancellation, we were fortunate enough to avoid witnessing that difficult departure. The previous NCIS: Los Angeles character’s emotional exit from NCIS was left off-screen, which saved us from the distress of watching someone we knew leave completely. Not only would this scene have been emotionally taxing, but it would have also diverted attention from the main characters in the NCIS: Hawai’i team. Additionally, a fourth and final season might have become frustrating as we sought resolution for all involved parties.
What’s Next For Sam After His NCIS Season 22, Episode 18 Return
Sam Is One Another Mission In The NCIS Universe
We found out that Sam has stepped down, but it appears he’s got something major brewing. When Vance proposed a return to the agency, Sam declined, explaining he needs to focus on personal endeavors. Remarkably, one of these projects seems connected to NCIS: Los Angeles’ character Hetty Lange (Linda Hunt), giving us the exciting news we’ve been eagerly anticipating – Hetty is indeed alive!
At the close of the cancelled NCIS: Los Angeles, the show didn’t manage to bring Hetty back from Syria, but Nell’s team successfully rescued her. It has been discovered that Vance is aware she’s working on a project with the DMZ, implying it’s both official and risky. Given this, Sam made it clear he wouldn’t discuss the matter openly, but we can trust him to not abandon efforts to safeguard others. Should Sam reappear in NCIS, there’s potential for more information about Hetty’s situation and her ongoing project.
