HEED THIS NOTICE! The article you’re about to read includes SPOILERS for The Last of Us season 2, episode 2. As I haven’t played the games myself, I can only speculate on where the series storyline might be going post-Joel’s demise. Given the scale of The Last of Us franchise today, it’s hard to steer clear of spoilers. So, while I wasn’t completely unaware of what transpired in seasons 1 and 2 regarding certain characters, the only major spoiler I was aware of before diving into season 2 was that Joel would meet a gruesome end at the hands of another character named Abby, an event that many gamers found objectionable.
Given Pedro Pascal’s and Joel’s significant impact on the HBO adaptation of The Last of Us, I had anticipated that his death might be delayed until the end of season 2. Instead, it occurred at the close of episode 2, leaving me uncertain about any forthcoming plot points for this season or even The Last of Us season 3. Nevertheless, considering the narrative themes established by The Last of Us season 2 and particularly episode 2’s ending, I have some speculations regarding what may transpire for Ellie, Abby, Dina, and Tommy in the show’s future.
Ellie Will Follow Abby To Seattle But Won’t End Up Killing Her
I Think Ellie Will End The Cycle Of Violence & Revenge
After Joel’s tragic demise, it’s evident that The Last of Us season 2 finds Ellie embarking on a tumultuous journey marked by revenge, animosity, sorrow, and remorse. Over the five years since the conclusion of The Last of Us season 1, Ellie and Joel’s bond had grown strained but remained strong, resembling a father-daughter relationship. Consequently, her anguish at watching Joel meet his cruel end while she was helpless to prevent it will only amplify the depth of her emotional response to his passing.
Abby didn’t just separate Joel from Ellie; she effectively severed their chance at reconciling their relationship. This act will weigh heavily on Ellie, fueling her rage and sadness into something concrete: a quest to eliminate Abby. In much the same way that Abby sought vengeance for the murder of her father by pursuing Joel, I expect “The Last of Us” to drive Ellie towards a life-long mission of seeking retribution against the one who took Joel from her.
Based on the events of The Last of Us season 2, it seems likely that Abby and her companions will return to Seattle following Joel’s demise. Given the challenges posed by the infected horde since the destruction of Jackson, Wyoming, I speculate Ellie may decide to reduce their numbers by venturing towards Seattle. As the preview for The Last of Us season 2, episode 3 hints at Ellie honing her combat skills and physical prowess in preparation, it seems probable that she’ll spend some time in Jackson before setting off northwestward.
It seems unclear when The Last of Us: Part II game might be released, but since HBO is dividing the story into two seasons, it’s likely that a significant amount of time will pass. I speculate that Ellie may not encounter and confront Abby’s group until near the end of season 2, with season 3 focusing on their ultimate confrontation. Given that Ellie is following the same path as Abby did prior to killing Joel, I anticipate that Ellie will eventually gain the advantage over Abby in Seattle during the events of season 3.
It seems unlikely that Ellie will carry out the act of killing Abby, given the central themes in “The Last of Us” revolve around the complex interplay between violence, sorrow, anger, and vengeance in a world bereft of law and order. Abby gave in to her fury upon killing Joel, but Joel’s bond with Ellie taught her the importance of love and forgiveness. If Ellie were to take Abby’s life, it wouldn’t align with Joel’s memory or wishes. Ultimately, I believe she will choose compassion over revenge, breaking the vicious cycle of violence and cruelty that has been a coping mechanism for their shared grief.
Ellie & Dina Will Get Together, But Dina Will Die Before Ellie Faces Abby
Ellie Will Likely Face Another Brutal Tragedy Before She Has The Chance To Kill Abby
Following the affectionate kiss between Ellie and Dina in episode 1 of The Last of Us season 2, it appears the storyline is hinting at a budding romance between them in upcoming episodes. Although Ellie may retreat to solitude as she mourns Joel and seeks retribution against Abby, Dina will be navigating her own emotional turmoil following her ordeal with Abby’s group. At first, they might find themselves growing apart, but I suspect that by the end of The Last of Us season 2, Ellie and Dina will have begun a romantic relationship officially.
In the grim world of The Last of Us, it seems there’s one more significant hurdle before Ellie faces off with Abby. Regrettably, I believe this obstacle may be Dina. It’s plausible that Ellie and Dina will journey to Seattle together to confront Abby, but either en route or once they arrive, I foresee a tragic turn of events for Dina. Whether she falls victim to one of The Last of Us’ infected or another person, her death might intensify Ellie’s rage against Abby, yet it will also lead her on the path toward forgiveness.
Jackson, Wyoming Will Be Inhospitable & Tommy Will Die While Protecting His Wife & Son
I Predict Tommy Will Sacrifice Himself To Save The Next Generation
In line with my interpretation from The Last of Us season 2, episode 2, I believe that Jackson, Wyoming won’t completely recover from the infected attack it suffered. Either some families decide to leave or they discover that Jackson is no longer a welcoming place. I anticipate that Tommy, Joel’s brother, will find it necessary to relocate his family, coinciding with Ellie’s journey towards Seattle.
Regrettably, it seems likely that during Tommy’s attempt to depart Jackson or as he adjusts to a new place, he will perish in an effort to safeguard his wife, Maria, and their son, Benjamin, from infected threats. If this were to occur, I believe Tommy would become increasingly determined to ensure the survival of the next generation, which encompasses Ellie and his son. This selfless act aligns thematically with the narrative of The Last of Us, as it would be fitting for Ellie and Benjamin to carry on the legacies of Joel and Tommy while striving to save humanity in the latter stages of the story.
Ellie Will Sacrifice Herself To Help Create A Vaccine For The Infection
Ellie Might Still Survive Creating The Cure
In the final episode of The Last of Us season 1, Joel killed Fireflies to prevent Ellie from being sacrificed. However, I believe that despite this, Ellie may eventually choose to sacrifice herself to develop a vaccine for the infected. Over the years, Ellie has grappled with her unique immunity and the greater purpose behind her survival amidst the death of everyone around her. Following the sparing of Abby, it seems likely that Ellie will persist in making sacrifices by offering her life to safeguard the future of humanity.

I think Ellie might agree to give her life to develop a cure for the infection in “The Last of Us”, but she won’t actually die. Instead, she could survive and bring about a new era of hope in the game’s post-apocalyptic setting. The Fireflies once believed they had to kill Ellie to study her immunity, but there may have been other ways to create the vaccine.
