In a recent interview, Ian McDiarmid shared that he had doubts if he had pushed it too far during the filming of this scene.

He expressed, “I felt like I had overstepped significantly, but George countered, ‘No, no, you can push even farther.’ It was at this point where the beast became accessible, and he was filled with exhilaration because he could shed his hypocritical facade.”

This involves embracing evil fully, or else he will be of no use – not even to himself, let alone Palpatine. As Palpatine grows weaker physically, Vader will grow stronger. This scene at the opera, for me, was the pinnacle of Palpatine’s manipulation.
