The Lumberjanes comic series, which ran from 2014 to 2020, is a beloved tale that captivated readers with more than 75 issues, special editions, and even a crossover with Gotham Academy. The story revolves around an extraordinary summer camp that appears at first glance to be just a scout training ground. Upon closer inspection, though, it becomes clear that something is amiss—unless our idea of a typical summer camp includes magical cats, mermaids, and demigods! It seems we may have missed the memo. The dedicated fanbase for Lumberjanes has been eagerly awaiting an adaptation for quite some time now.
Shannon Watters, Grace Ellis, Gus Allen, and N.D. Stevenson developed the enchanting and endearing series titled “Lumberjanes“, published by Boom Box! This unique creation has garnered a devoted fan base due to its distinctive storyline that defies comparison with other series. The creators of “Lumberjanes” have diligently strived to shatter the mold established within the comic book industry, experimenting with diverse characters, settings, and narratives to birth something original. The tale seamlessly blends elements of action, comedy-drama, and coming-of-age, with characters delving into their pasts and self-discovery. “Lumberjanes” follows a group of campers residing at an unusual summer camp, which includes Jo, April, Molly, Mal, and Ripley, among many others they encounter along the way.
The Success of Lumberjanes
Back when Lumberjanes made its debut at Boom! Studios, I had no inkling it would last more than eight issues, wrapping up a single storyline. Boy, was I wrong as the series went on to publish over 60 additional comics! And guess what? The Lumberjanes weren’t just content with their own world; they even got the chance to explore another universe through a six-issue crossover event with DC Comics, where they rubbed shoulders with the students of Gotham Academy.
Lumberjanes is deeply cherished by many, as its diverse characters offer role models for all, creating a story that resonates, warms hearts, and stands out. The narrative style is engaging, playful, and accessible even for younger readers. In essence, it combines the enchantment of summer camp with actual magical elements, ensuring each character is treated with care and consideration.
Enthusiasts and reviewers alike can’t get enough of the series Lumberjanes. In 2015, it took home two Eisner Awards (Best New Series and Best Publication for Teens) and was also nominated for multiple other awards. While hardcore fans may think it deserved all the nominations, that’s a topic for another discussion entirely.
Waiting Patiently for an Adaptation
The Lumberjanes comic book series has achieved significant success and came to an end naturally, not due to cancellation. Just like unforgettable summer adventures, they eventually give way to autumn – it’s just the natural course of things. Sadly, the development process for a movie adaptation hasn’t run as smoothly. Back in 2015, 20th Century Fox acquired the rights to create a live-action version. However, fans should be aware that this project has since halted, with the purchase of Fox by Disney in 2019 effectively ending any further progress on this adaptation.
There’s still a chance! Back in 2020, Max found themselves embroiled in a competitive bidding situation against Apple and Peacock for the rights to Lumberjanes. In the end, they emerged victorious. This time around, the plan is to produce an animated series. It seems fitting since creating animated mermaids and giant cats will be less complicated. To further fuel your optimism, MAX has revealed that they’re working on an animated special to introduce the characters. Notably, ND Stevenson will play a significant role in this project, serving as both executive producer and producer. The intention is for it to evolve into a longer series after the initial special. Additional details have been shared in subsequent press releases, mentioning more executive producers joining the team.
The Current Status
Regrettably, major updates about the show occurred in 2020. ND Stevenson declared (once more in 2020) that the production was under development, not active, which might imply that there are still many uncertainties, but the project isn’t canceled yet. Since then, not much news has been shared, which could be a cause for worry. Worsening the situation is HBO’s collaboration with Discovery+. Previously, when this happened, the series Lumberjanes was discontinued. Let’s hope it doesn’t happen again!
It’s important to understand that significant projects like adapting a script don’t materialize quickly. There’s a high probability that ND Stevenson is still meticulously working on this task, even though it might take longer than expected. Instead, let’s discuss the success of the adaptations for ‘Nimona’ and ‘She-Ra’, both masterminded by Stevenson. In the unlikely event that MAX decides to abandon the project, it’s possible that Netflix could pick it up, considering their history with successful adaptations.
