David Tennant Sends Emotional Message on Trans Allyship and LGBTQ+ Rights

In ITV’s The Assembly, David Tennant and three other famous individuals face questioning from a panel consisting of autistic, neurodiverse, or learning-disabled interviewers.

In each thirty-minute segment, there are no boundaries on questions or subjects, and the interviewers are frank and unreserved. Tonight’s program finds Doctor Who actor Essin reducing to tears as he responds to one of the interviewer’s queries.

They inquired: “The work you’re doing for our community is truly impressive. I’d like to focus my questions on that aspect, if that’s acceptable with you.

Why did you decide to embark on a career that supports the community? What led you to declare, ‘Enough is enough! I can’t stand by any longer as this injustice persists?

When Tennant was about to reply, he felt a moment of emotion, and expressed: “During my teenage years, the government of Margaret Thatcher enacted something known as Section 28, which aimed to prohibit the open discussion or positive portrayal of homosexuality in educational institutions.

The term referred to as “weird” was actually a broad, ambiguous label used to prohibit discussions about homosexuality in schools and to imply that such behavior wasn’t considered normal.

Looking back, that attempt seems as preposterous and outdated as something from the Middle Ages. Similarly, I believe the stigmatization and marginalization of the transgender community mirrors this, turning them into a controversial topic in politics.

Tenant consistently advocates for the rights of LGBTQIA+ individuals in various ways. For instance, they often wear a Trans Pride flag design on their TARDIS badge during media appearances and events. Additionally, they have expressed supportive messages towards this community.

In 2023, Tennant commended Pride Month during his interview on the Ed Miliband’s “Reasons to Feel Good” podcast, expressing to the ex-Labour leader that it brought a sense of joy to him.

He remarked: “It’s noteworthy that Pride Month thrives during a period when certain areas of the world appear increasingly intolerant and regressive.

We need to keep pushing forward. It’s not guaranteed that we’ll always move in the correct path toward understanding. Each of us must continue to work towards this cause daily.

In the continuation at The Assembly, Tennant expressed: “I wish for us, as a community, to simply allow individuals their freedom. To step aside and not hinder them!
