Fans of “The Last of Us” are still processing the events of last week’s HBO adaptation, which saw Joel, portrayed by Pedro Pascal, meet a violent end on screen. This week’s episode took a more leisurely pace, in contrast to the fast-paced action found in the video game “The Last of Us Part II.” Instead of hurtling forward at breakneck speed, this week’s installment delved into the aftermath of Joel’s death, providing a glimpse into the town of Jackson’s reactions and sentiments towards Ellie’s intentions for revenge. However, before Ellie could embark on her vengeful journey, she made one final visit to Joel. Spoiler alert for this week’s episode of The Last of Us.
Before Ellie and I embark on our quest for revenge in Seattle, we pause outside of Jackson near a cemetery that the town has built. In these graves lie those who didn’t survive the attack by the infected, and also my brother Joel. His grave marker is unassuming with the inscription: “Joel Miller, Cherished Brother and Father.
When she discovers it, Ellie halts and bends to her knees in front of the spot, unfolding a small piece of fabric to scatter something on the ground above Joel’s tomb. Though not everyone might grasp this right away, seasoned fans of The Last of Us games will instantly recognize that Ellie is depositing coffee beans at Joel’s grave.
It might appear that this instance is incidental, yet Joel’s affection for coffee has been evident not just in video games, but also in the television series. Fans might remember a scene from Season 1, Episode 4 of The Last of Us, where we find Joel and another character setting up camp in the woods. The following morning, Ellie wakes up to the noise of Joel brewing coffee. She questions if the coffee was “really what those Starbucks in the QZ used to sell,” and she sums up her opinion on the drink by stating it “smells like burnt excrement.
For fans who have played “The Last of Us Part II” video game, they will recognize this scene, though it may play out with some variations. While Ellie does visit Joel’s grave in the game, she doesn’t leave coffee beans or any other items there. In the TV show adaptation, this is one of the minor changes that enhance the original content a bit more.
New episodes of The Last of Us air Sundays at 9 PM ET on HBO and MAX.
