Oblivion Remastered Player Escapes the Confines of Cyrodiil to Explore Valenwood, Skyrim, and Even Hammerfell, the Rumored Setting of the Elder Scrolls VI

In the game The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, the action takes place in Cyrodiil, a province within Tamriel, which hosts the Imperial Empire. This fantastical world offers numerous quests that could easily occupy an ardent adventurer for hundreds of hours. However, some players have been eagerly seeking weak points in the game’s border, and even venturing into areas outside its limits.

This past weekend, Reddit user GnoblinXD shared an account of their adventure that took them from Cyrodiil’s border to Valenwood, a southwestern province of Tamriel inhabited by the Bosmer (Wood Elves), and neighboring Elsweyr, which is familiar to players of The Elder Scrolls Online. GnoblinXD discovered they could navigate past the unseen boundary established to prevent such actions, and then, in true fashion of The Elder Scrolls games, they leaped across the river and scaled the cliff using their agility.

GnoblinXD expressed his astonishment as he delved a little deeper into the map, discovering that almost the entire expanse of land depicted on it was indeed present, albeit without intricate details.

In simpler terms, Valenwood is a desolate region with no signs of life, settlements, NPCs, or vegetation. While investigating here, GnoblinXD encountered various graphic and environmental problems one might anticipate, as the developers of Oblivion Remastered didn’t originally intend it for exploration. Unfortunately, GnoblinXD got stuck in an empty space while trying to reach what they thought were the Summerset Isles west of Valenwood. They also found that reloading saved games outside the borders of Cyrodiil doesn’t seem effective, leaving them with no choice but to restart within those borders.

Should you seek more specifics, GnoblinXD has shared a video, detailed below, demonstrating the step-by-step process of accessing Valenwood through their recent groundbreaking find regarding the borders.

Unphased, GnoblinXD subsequently shared pictures from their trip to Hammerfell, a western Tamriel province speculated to be the backdrop for the forthcoming The Elder Scrolls VI game.

Bethesda has been silent about the location of the upcoming The Elder Scrolls game, leaving fans to speculate based on a 36-second trailer showing majestic mountains and a coastal region overlooking an expansive ocean. The most popular theory suggests that the sequel could take players back to Hammerfell – a region featured in The Elder Scrolls 2: Daggerfall, The Elder Scrolls Adventures: Redguard, and The Elder Scrolls Online. The visuals of dense forests, towering mountains, and bustling coastal cities shown in previous games seem to match those in the trailer, implying that we might return to the land of the Redguards again.

To reach Hammerfell, GnoblinXD traversed the southern passage of Valenwood, bypassed the coastal city of Anvil – the furthest west in Cyrodiil – and then headed northwards towards Hammerfell.

GnoblinXD exclaimed, “Following countless hours of exploration, I eventually discovered the far side of Cyrodiil’s northern boundary! The landscape appears immense, dwarfing Valenwood and Elsweyr combined. This landmass extends past visual range, hinting at its potential vastness… It may be empty, but my curiosity is piqued all the same.

Here’s an intriguing twist: GnoblinXD attempted to locate the coastline hinted in The Elder Scrolls VI teaser by walking westward towards its potential in-game location. However, instead of reaching his destination, he fell off the map’s edge and found himself stranded in the labyrinthine backrooms of Oblivion, humorously commenting, “I didn’t perish, but now I’m stuck in the backrooms of Oblivion, chuckling.

As a gamer myself, I’m eagerly anticipating the day when I, GnoblinXD, might stumble upon that hidden area, or perhaps another fellow adventurer will beat me to it. Regardless, the stage is set for an exciting revelation of what could potentially be one of the most-anticipated video game settings ever!

GnoblinXD emphasized that he arrived here without any modifications, exploits, or special commands, playing the game as it originally is, ‘vanilla’. He also found it amusing that Hammerfell appears to be heavily forested while Valenwood seems devoid of trees.

“Anyway, time for me to do some exploring, might update more later :)”

This occasion, the group embarked on an expedition, specifically exploring the region known as Elsweyr. Notably, Elsweyr is the residence of the Khajiit – a cat-like playable race that has appeared prominently in all previous main installments of The Elder Scrolls games.

The exceptional feature of this out-of-bounds zone is its breathtaking view that strongly resembles The Throat of the World, Tamriel’s tallest mountain and one of the most recognizable landmarks in Skyrim from The Elder Scrolls V. It is here where the Dragonborn ascends the Seven Thousand Steps to reach High Hrothgar, an ancient monastery inhabited by the Greybeards. This is also where they learn powerful Shouts and converse with the dragon, Paarthurnax.

Indeed, it’s correct that you can venture into Skyrim within Oblivion Remastered, but regrettably, you won’t be able to journey deep enough to reach The Throat of the World or encounter any signs of life there.

Isn’t this fascinating? Venture as far as you can on the map in Oblivion Remastered, and you’ll spot the majestic peak of Skyrim’s highest mountain, The Throat of the World, in the horizon. This is a new addition not found in the original game.

GnoblinXD pointed out that Elsweyr, similar to Valenwood, appears quite barren beyond the borders with Cyrodiil. Unlike Valenwood, though, it seems the sparseness of vegetation and wildlife is more in line with its lore. Sadly, he didn’t find any cats, deserts, or Moon Sugar there, which was particularly disappointing.

As an avid explorer, I found myself wandering about, searching for captivating sights and snapping photos as I went. Intrigued by how far south one could travel, I embarked on a journey. Surprisingly, it turned out that one could go quite a distance. Upon reaching and surpassing the southern border of Elsweyr, all that lay ahead was an expanse of sea, so I decided to venture east towards Black Marsh instead.

As a captivated enthusiast, I must admit that Black Marsh is remarkably one-of-a-kind. There’s a strong possibility you might find a post from me about it someday, if there’s interest. Unfortunately, I didn’t manage to explore how far east I could go, but intriguingly, beyond the farthest eastern edge of the map lies an enormous landmass, a mystery waiting to be unveiled.

GnoblinXD is currently adventuring beyond the borders of Cyrodiil, and there might be more places to discover and iconic landmarks on the horizon. They’ve managed to reach both Morrowind and Skyrim territories, but their explorable region isn’t expansive yet. Unfortunately, they won’t be able to take a selfie from the Throat of The World 🙁

However, after their post gained immense popularity on reddit (with over 19,000 upvotes), it appears others are set to make their own discoveries. For instance, Twitter user @Mar_Animation revealed they ventured into Hammerfell early in the game.

It seems I was wandering off-grid, apparently displeasing some as I ventured beyond the borders of Cyrodiil. #Oblivion #OblivionRemastered
