Skyler Gisondo shared his unique method of getting ready for playing Jimmy Olsen in James Gunn’s upcoming “Superman” movie. He admitted that he deliberately chose not to delve too deeply into the character’s extensive comic book background. Instead of absorbing decades of history about the iconic Daily Planet photographer, Gisondo preferred a more instinctive approach to avoid feeling overwhelmed by the pressure of portraying such a cherished legacy character in the founding film of the new DC Universe. He discussed his decision during an interview on the “DC Studios Showcase” podcast.
Gisondo stated that his character, Jimmy Olsen, is in a favorable position at the beginning of Superman. He added, “I believe he’s eager for more. He’s somewhat of a photojournalist, but he also yearns to be more engaged in the writing side. He’s deeply invested in the stories. For a young man at The Daily Planet, I think he’s progressing quite well up the corporate ladder.” When the hosts mentioned that Jimmy eventually wins a Pulitzer Prize in the comics, Gisondo seemed genuinely surprised, questioning “where?” before playfully claiming, “Oh, I definitely knew that! I read all the comics.
The playful banter persisted as the hosts mentioned Jimmy Olsen’s ongoing romantic situation with the villain Silver Banshee in comics. Confused, Gisondo asked, “What do I have to do with this?” Upon clarification of the unexpected romance, Gisondo jokingly said, “Apparently, I haven’t kept up on that one, which is why it hasn’t crossed my path yet.” This interaction showcased Gisondo’s humorous reaction and also hinted at his admission of not being well-versed in comic lore before accepting the role.
When it came to taking on the movie role, Gisondo shared that people around him reacted with amazement and excitement, saying things like “Wow, Superman!” He admitted he tried not to let this overwhelming response overwhelm him by adopting an attitude of “It’s just… It’s going to be fun, it’s no big deal.” To avoid feeling the pressure of the role’s history and responsibility, Gisondo approached the project casually, or as he put it, “I kinda just came in freestyling, man. So hopefully that works.
James Gunn’s Vision for a New Superman Era
In contrast to Skyler Gisondo’s improvisational portrayal of Jimmy Olsen, director James Gunn has a distinct plan for the new DC Universe’s Superman. Not only is he directing, but he also wrote the script. The character being depicted here is a younger Superman who’s already embraced his role, skipping over the standard origin story elements. Instead, the narrative delves into Clark Kent juggling his Kryptonian background with his Smallville upbringing, under the watchful eyes of Jonathan (Pruitt Taylor Vince) and Martha Kent (Neva Howell). The main conflict revolves around Superman reconciling his innate goodness and thirst for justice with a world that might view benevolence as outdated.
In this new take on Superman, we delve into Clark Kent’s life at the Daily Planet, where he teams up with star reporter Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan) and Editor-in-Chief Perry White (Wendell Pierce). Gunn refers to this narrative as a “workplace origin story,” exploring their early professional bonds and Clark’s blossoming romance with Lois. Metropolis provides the stage for the introduction of other superheroes, establishing a universe where Superman is not the sole powerful figure. Among the confirmed characters are Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner Green Lantern, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, and Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho. Furthermore, Frank Grillo reprises his role from Creature Commandos, suggesting ties to other parts of the DCU.
Superman is scheduled for release on July 11th.
