Among my favorite characters from Star Trek: The Next Generation is Denise Crosby’s Lt. Tasha Yar. I was delighted to see her in the series finale, “All Good Things…”. During the first season, Lt. Yar served as Chief of Security and Tactical Officer on the USS Enterprise. However, she met an untimely end at the hands of Armus (portrayed by Ron Gans & Mart McChesney) on Vagra II. The shocking nature of her death in The Next Generation was one of the earliest and most impactful, leaving a lasting impression throughout the series.

Throughout his life, as portrayed by Brent Spiner in shows like “Star Trek: Picard”, Lieutenant Commander Data kept a hologram of Lieutenant Yar. One of the most memorable episodes from “Star Trek: The Next Generation”, titled “The Measure of a Man”, even featured a statue of her, symbolizing his sense of personal identity. Though Michael Dorn excelled in playing Lt. Worf, who replaced Lt. Yar as Chief of Security, her presence continued to linger on the Enterprise. It’s no wonder then, over three decades since “The Next Generation” ended, that seeing Lieutenant Tasha Yar in “All Good Things…” is still a remarkable experience.

Time Travel Means That Tasha Yar Can Be A Hero One More Time

In the annals of Star Trek: The Next Generation, it’s widely believed that its finale stands out as one of the franchise’s finest. The reason lies in its clever blend of references to seven exceptional seasons of television and a gripping narrative. In the episode titled “All Good Things…”, the character Q, played by John de Lancie, reappears to challenge Captain Jean Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) and humanity once more. This time around, Captain Picard is required to navigate through three distinct moments in his own timeline, involving his past, the current storyline, and a potential future. Notably, because Captain Picard is experiencing his past events, Lieutenant Tasha Yar plays a significant role in this particular episode.

In the episode, it is Lieutenant Tasha Yar who bravely defends the crew of the Enterprise when Captain Picard seems to be jeopardizing the ship without any apparent reason given. The storyline spends a significant amount of time emphasizing the strong friendships that Lt. Yar shares with other beloved characters from TNG. If “Yesterday’s Enterprise” allowed Denise Crosby to portray the Tasha Yar she originally auditioned for, then “All Good Things…” served as a fitting farewell to this iconic rendition of the character.

It Would Have Been Hard To Bring Her Back, But I Would Have Loved To See Denise Crosby Again

In the finale of TNG , it would have been even better if Lt. Tasha Yar, played by Denise Crosby, had made a comeback one more time. What truly made Star Trek: Picard stand out was its ability to assemble various iconic characters from previous Star Trek series and offer fans a peek into the future of their favorite characters. In the third season of Star Trek: Picard , Captain Picard manages to reunite almost the entire original crew from The Next Generation, including Lt. Commander Data, who seemingly perished in Star Trek: Generations.
