In the recent episode of HBO’s The Last of Us, titled ‘The Path’, the series delves into the repercussions of the violent happenings from last week. This episode paves the way for a journey filled with vengeance that lies ahead. Although our feelings towards the show have been mixed up until now, we must admit that this season’s deliberate tempo is particularly commendable and is vividly demonstrated in ‘The Path’.
This review will feature story spoilers.
The narrative commences by gathering the remnants of Jackson’s assault and the tragic demise of Joel. With the smoldering infected lingering near the perimeter wall, we witness a poignant scene between Tommy and his late brother. This moment is touching not only for its portrayal of brotherly bond, but also for its echoes of the first episode from season one, underscoring the incredible journey that has unfolded in the storyline.
In the game, Ellie is often thrust into immediate action without much time to rest, whereas in the show, creator and writer Craig Mazin deliberately slows down the pace to focus on life in Jackson following a great tragedy. This slowdown allows us to explore how this devastating event affects the characters who live through it.
The system doesn’t operate entirely smoothly. Elie’s intense gaze is impactful in the game, yet here she appears playful at times. Instead of an instantaneous, raw emotional response seen in the game, there are committees and town hall meetings involved. While there are pauses in the narrative that allow for a breather, the usual character twists characteristic of this series remain. However, it seems to miss the disoriented and gut-wrenching sensation following a devastating loss like the one we’ve recently experienced.
As a dedicated gamer, let me tell you, I was genuinely taken aback when the Seraphites were introduced without much prior setup in this show. It’s like they just appeared out of nowhere, and as someone who’s played The Last of Us Part II, my first encounter with these folks is etched deeply into my memory. I can’t help but feel that some elements are being altered prematurely, potentially spoiling later events in the storyline.
In a more straightforward manner, we believe their impact might not have been as significant on television, given that we encountered the Seraphites organically before meeting them in the game – through the environment and optional conversations. While the show could still handle it effectively, some of the mystery surrounding them seems to be diminished already.
In the initial episode of this season, it became clear that the bond between Ellie and Dina forms a significant part of the narrative. Previously, we had some reservations about Bella Ramsey’s acting, particularly during last week’s intense emotional moments. However, Ramsey is now bringing a unique interpretation to Ellie that feels authentic. A scene involving Joel’s jacket stands out as especially poignant.
The strong connection between Ramsey and Merced is commendable, making them a solid base for the narrative of season two. We’re eagerly looking forward to witnessing the development of their relationship, even though we have an idea about its eventual outcome.
We’re eagerly anticipating the upcoming episodes in Seattle, as it unfolds before us with an intriguing allure. Ellie and Dina draw near, and the city seems to take on a formidable yet captivating presence. From afar, it appears peaceful, but its dark secrets hidden within its streets and structures make it feel like a mysterious beast. The excitement of uncovering these secrets in the next episode is something we’ve been yearning for this season.
As we approach the final four episodes of the season, there’s a lot more to look forward to, even if things unfold as expected. HBO appears to be savoring the story, which is a positive sign. Let’s hope they don’t rush through it and miss out on the key moments. Given the solid foundation laid so far, we’re now eagerly waiting for what comes next. That’s where the true measure of this adaptation will lie.
