⚠️ Caution: This discussion reveals key plot points from the finale of Dark Winds season 3. If you haven’t watched it yet, please proceed with care.
The conclusion of Dark Winds season 3 offers valuable insights into BJ Vines (John Diehl) and his potential actions had Joe Leaphorn (Zahn McClarnon) not administered “Indian Justice.” In the final episode of Dark Winds, both good and evil characters received fitting consequences.
For instance, Leaphorn and Chee (Kiowa Gordon) rescued George Bowlegs and avenged Dr. Reynolds (Christopher Heyerdahl), who was unmasked as the antagonist of Dark Winds season 3, known as Ye’iitsoh.
Bernadette Manuelito (Jessica Matten) also exposed Border Patrol corruption, eliminated Budge de Baca (Raoul Max Trujillo), and liberated the victims from the human trafficking network.
Despite numerous characters in the series Dark Winds receiving their due punishments for their actions, one character who notably escaped all consequences was Tom Spenser (Bruce Greenwood). As the head of a drug and human trafficking ring, Spenser managed to cover his tracks effectively, ensuring no link to the crimes he orchestrated. To add insult to injury, the final episode of season 3 revealed that Spenser was enjoying a luxurious Mediterranean lifestyle, while his associates either met their end or were incarcerated. In essence, Dark Winds underscored what Chief Leaphorn stopped by taking down BJ Vines through the character of Tom Spenser.
Tom Spenser’s Fate In Dark Winds Season 3 Is Exactly What Would Have Happened To BJ Vines
Spenser Fled The Country & Avoided Facing Justice, Which Is Exactly What BJ Vines Would Have Done
In the third season of Dark Winds, Tom Spenser managed to avoid any consequences for his extensive criminal activities, which included a drug and human trafficking ring responsible for at least two deaths. Instead of facing punishment, he was able to retire to a picturesque villa, escaping the repercussions of the lives he indirectly ruined. The concept of “justice” as one might understand it doesn’t seem applicable to Spenser’s fate in Dark Winds season 3. A significant factor in Spenser’s ability to evade arrest was likely the same “white privilege” that BJ Vines could have exploited to his advantage.
In simpler terms, Spenser, like BJ Vines, was involved in situations with striking similarities, though not directly. While Vines was indirectly linked to Joe Jr.’s death, Spenser was implicated in multiple deaths and criminal activities. The key difference is that Leaphorn took action against Vines, whereas no one held Spenser accountable. If Leaphorn hadn’t punished BJ Vines, he would likely have escaped the law, much like Spenser, who seems to evade the legal system designed to protect him.
Was Joe Right To Kill BJ Vines In Dark Winds Season 2?
Joe Did Give Vines Justice He Wouldn’t Have Received, But It Cost Him Far Too Much
In light of the fact that BJ Vines could have easily escaped any consequences from the Drumco explosion, it becomes easier to understand why Joe felt his actions against Vines were warranted. Essentially, the only way Leaphorn could have achieved true justice for his son’s murder was by taking Vines’ life himself. Given that if Joe hadn’t acted, Vines would be enjoying a cocktail on a beach, knowing he outsmarted the law, while those who lost loved ones in the explosion, including Joe and Emma, would continue to grieve – such an outcome would hardly qualify as justice in my book.
As a film enthusiast, I must say that Joe’s choice wasn’t just about justice; it was a profound moral quandary, wrapped in complexity. Killing Vines wasn’t without its cost – it left Joe grappling with guilt, tormented by the specter of Ye’iitsoh, and straining his marriage with Emma (Deanna Allison). It’s challenging to assert that he made the right call when the fallout was so devastating.
In this scenario, Joe effectively pinned Vines for the Drumco explosion, whereas Spenser managed to cover his tracks. This meant Vines would have faced a less comfortable life on the run. Yet, Dark Winds didn’t offer an easy resolution – it posed a tough question with no simple answer.
