StarCraft Mobile, Overwatch Mobile Are Reportedly Being Developed by Nexon – Rumour

It appears that Blizzard Entertainment might be planning to broaden the reach of its popular franchises, StarCraft and Overwatch, by developing mobile versions. Though no official statement has been released yet, a report from Korean publication MTN hints at a potential partnership between Blizzard and Nexon to launch smartphone games based on these franchises.

Based on the report, Blizzard has been considering offers from Korean game development studios who might utilize the StarCraft and Overwatch intellectual properties. It’s suggested that the licensing for both properties will be bundled together, including the right to publish and manage the games in the Japanese and Korean markets.

It’s important to mention that both StarCraft and Overwatch are highly recognized intellectual properties in South Korea. In fact, StarCraft played a significant role in creating the eSports industry as we understand it today, mainly due to its widespread popularity in the Korean market.

As per MTN’s findings, the contest for this bidding battle has been intense due to the high demand for the StarCraft intellectual property in South Korea. The report highlights that any studio wishing to claim the IP must exceed the gameplay of StarCraft 2 to establish a strong position. Additionally, the report suggests that StarCraft could be transformed into a Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA) or card game; however, these adaptations might not fully leverage the potential of the StarCraft IP.

Regarding Overwatch Mobile, it appears that the report indicates a potential issue; the rights to distribute the game are currently only granted for Korea and Japan. However, what’s causing contention is that various companies are pushing for global distribution rights rather than just the limited regions.

Regarding StarCraft, Blizzard Entertainment hasn’t said much about new content since they announced in 2020 that no further development would be done for StarCraft 2. The most recent addition to the series was StarCraft: Remastered, which was released in 2017.

A whisper from September 2024 hints that Blizzard has been discreetly developing a fresh game within the StarCraft series. Contrary to being another RTS sequel like StarCraft 2, this rumor suggests it’s actually a first-person shooter instead. The development team for this project, then in its initial stages, was reportedly led by the team behind the terminated Odyssey project at that time. It is also said that Far Cry veteran developer Dan Hay is now overseeing the creation of this spinoff.

In the past few months, “StarCraft: Remastered” and “StarCraft 2: Campaign Collection” have been playable on PC Game Pass and Game Pass Ultimate. The multiplayer aspect of “StarCraft 2” can be played for free through Blizzard’s Battle.net launcher.

Instead of paying to purchase it, you can play Overwatch 2 at no cost on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch.
