Miami Vice Remake: Top Gun Director’s Next Blockbuster Unveiled!

The popular TV series “Miami Vice” is set to return to the big screen in a new adaptation, with Joseph Kosinski, director of “Top Gun: Maverick,” at the helm. This upcoming project is currently underway at Universal Studios, as reported by Variety, and has already enlisted writer Dan Gilroy. The new version will be based on the original NBC series that aired from 1984 to 1989, unlike the 2006 movie starring Jamie Foxx. At this stage, it’s unknown who will take on the leading roles, but with Kosinski involved, given his success with action movies and buddy-cop genres, fans are already eagerly anticipating this remake.

Miami Vice featured Don Johnson portraying James “Sonny” Crockett and Philip Michael Thomas playing Ricardo “Rico” Tubbs – both detectives working for the Metro-Dade Police Department in Miami, Florida. This show was a crime drama that aimed to stand out from traditional police procedurals by using catchy music and trendy visuals. However, it drew inspiration from real-life crimes happening in Miami, with most mysteries being solved within each episode.

Miami Vice is particularly renowned for its daring fashion trends and stylish attire. The main characters donned vibrant suits in various hues, occasionally displaying a distinctive rolled-up blazer sleeves style that remains a visual symbol of the 1980s even today. Additionally, their fascination with luxury automobiles has left an indelible mark on subsequent series such as Fast & Furious. Beyond its aesthetic appeal, the show was not afraid to delve into significant social matters, encompassing global political issues of the era and tackling sensitive topics like homophobia.

As a devoted admirer, it’s not hard to fathom why the studio found Kosinski appealing for this endeavor. His knack for orchestrating testosterone-charged action, evident in films like Top Gun and Spiderhead, surely piqued their interest. With his upcoming movie, F1, set to hit U.S. screens on June 25th, it’s Brad Pitt who takes the wheel as Formula One racecar driver Sonny Hayes.

Simultaneously, Gilroy boasts an impressive acting resume with credits such as “The Bourne Legacy” and “Kong: Skull Island”. He also served as the writer and director of “Nightcrawler”, a film that could potentially be relevant to “Miami Vice”, particularly if it aims to deliver sharp social commentary. Currently, Gilroy is working on the writing team for “Andor”, which is now in its second season on Disney+.

Currently, the original “Miami Vice” isn’t streaming on any subscription platforms, but you can rent or buy it from video-on-demand stores such as YouTube, Apple TV, and Amazon Prime Video. As for the new movie, it’s still in its early stages of development, so no release date has been announced yet.
