With the debut of “Sunrise on the Reaping“, Suzanne Collins has provided followers with a more detailed sequence of events within the franchise. This novel delves into the hidden happenings during Haymitch Abernathy’s Games and the genesis of the rebellion portrayed in “Catching Fire” and “Mockingjay“. Previously, the original trilogy gave a broad overview of the timeline; however, with this additional information, fans can now comprehend the exact number of games that preceded the rebellion and, more importantly, the background story of Panem itself.
By reading the prequel novel titled “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes“, readers were given a glimpse into the tumultuous period known as the first rebellion, as well as a deeper understanding of the early stages of the Games. In the dystopian world of “The Hunger Games“, where specific years aren’t provided, we will refer to the timeline post-rebellion as “After the Dark Days” (ADD) for convenience.
The Formation of Panem Is Left a Mystery
The Novels Do Not Give a Timeframe for When Exactly This Dystopian Future Takes Place
In the story of “The Hunger Games,” it’s not explicitly stated when North America transformed into the nation of Panem. Following a succession of catastrophic natural events and resource depletion conflicts, many societies appear to have collapsed. Subsequently, what was once North America was restructured into thirteen districts, with the affluent Capitol at its center, where the ruling class and administration were based.
For an unspecified duration, the nation known as Panem functioned under a totalitarian regime, where the Capitol held complete control. Each district endured differing degrees of impoverishment while contributing resources to the Capitol, seldom benefiting from these resources themselves. Consequently, resentment towards the Capitol grew among the districts, leading them to rebel.
The Dark Days Lasted for Three Years
The First Rebellion Caused Devastation Across Panem
The Dark Days” denotes the initial uprising within Panem, where the districts rose against their capital rulers, leading to a devastating civil war. The conflict, as per Capitol’s historical account, was sparked by District 13, which had expertise in nuclear weapons. During this period, Jabberjay birds were genetically modified to function as spies for the Capitol due to their ability to replicate human conversations perfectly. “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” portrays these times as challenging for Panem, with some Capitol inhabitants reportedly resorting to cannibalism in an effort to survive.
In the early stages, Coriolanus Snow and his relative Tigris Snow were young, as depicted in the initial scenes of the movie version of “Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes”. Later on, a compromise was struck between the Capitol and District 13, sparing them from mutual annihilation. As the Capitol bombarded the surface of District 13, its people took shelter beneath the ground. The Capitol then exploited the apparent destruction of District 13 to instill fear in the other districts, forcing them into compliance.
The First Hunger Games (1 ADD – 9 ADD)
The First 9 Hunger Games Were Unremarkable
Following the conclusion of the war, the Capitol enacted the Treaty of Treason, introducing a series of laws aimed at preserving peace. One such law was the establishment of the Hunger Games, an annual televised competition where one male and one female child from ages 12 to 18 were chosen at random from each district to engage in mortal combat within an arena.
As depicted in “Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes”, it was Casca Highbottom and Coriolanus Snow’s father who conceived the concept of the Hunger Games. Initially, these games were quite rudimentary, often ending swiftly because there weren’t many places for the tributes to hide in their arena, which resembled a colosseum. Over time, as the games continued year after year, the citizens of the Capitol started losing interest due to their brutal and monotonous nature.
The 10th Hunger Games and Lucy Gray (10 ADD)
The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes Prequel Explores This Period
The 10th Hunger Games marked a significant shift for Panem, as detailed in “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes“. With the Capitol starting to lose interest in the Games, Dr. Volumnia Gaul assigns the graduating class from the Capitol Academy to guide the tributes, aiming to create more excitement among the audience about the Games. In this context, Coriolanus Snow introduces concepts such as betting and sponsorships for the first time during the 10th Games, which also featured tribute interviews before they entered the arena.

In the unfortunate event that the arena was bombed prior to the Games commencing, it resulted in hidden passageways appearing, providing refuge. This extension of the Games caught and captivated the attention of the Capitol spectators.
It was District 12’s Lucy Gray Baird who eventually triumphed in the Games, a contestant whom Snow had guided. As the story unfolds, Snow develops feelings for Lucy Gray and provides her with rat poison for use within the arena. However, their secret affair is uncovered, leading to Snow being relocated as a peacekeeper to District 12. Here, he shares some private moments with Lucy Gray.
Upon discovering that Snow had betrayed Sejanus Plinth by informing the Capitol about his ties to rebels, Snow ascends to the position of heir to the Plinth family’s prosperity within the Capitol.
The 11th – 24th Hunger Games (11 ADD – 24 ADD)
The Games Evolved a Lot During This Era
After the incredible triumph of the tenth Hunger Games, the events took on a grander scale and became more spectacular. The winner of the eleventh Games was the first victor to embark on a Victory Tour. At this juncture, the Games shifted from an indoor colosseum-like setting to an open-air arena.

Over the course of the games, the technology used in creating the arena evolved significantly, with each year featuring a unique environment conceived by the Capitol. Few other victors from that era are recognized, but significant characters such as Beetee Latier emerged during this period. Meanwhile, Snow was pursuing his education and climbing the political ladder, eventually ascending to the position of President of Panem.
The First Quarter Quell (25 ADD)
The 25th Hunger Games Featured a Cruel Twist
As per the Treaty of Treason, every 25 years, there would be a unique event called the Quarter Quell, which held an unexpected twist regarding the selection of tributes. Instead of the tributes being chosen at random, each district was required to vote for a boy and a girl to represent them in the games.
To commemorate the 25th anniversary, each district was asked to organize an election and choose representatives who would serve as tributes. This was a stark reminder for the rebels that their decision to instigate violence was leading to the deaths of their children.
Or:
On the 25th anniversary, every district was tasked with holding elections to select representatives known as tributes. This served as a solemn reminder to the rebels about the lives of their children being lost due to their choice to engage in violence.
– Catching Fire, 2009.
This move by the Capitol, though harsh, represented a strategic maneuver to prevent future uprisings. The person chosen would have probably incited discord among the Districts, making united rebellion against the Capitol highly unlikely. Notably, the First Quarter Quell was the inaugural event to feature the Cornucopia, an element that became central in all subsequent Games.
The 26th – 49th Games (26 ADD – 49 ADD)
These Games Introduced Some Major Players in the Story
Following the First Quarter Quell, the Hunger Games resumed their usual course for the ensuing 25 years, during which Coriolanus Snow rose to the presidency of Panem. It was also around this period that clandestine academies sprang up in Districts 1, 2, and 4, where children were tutored in combat skills to participate in the Games as volunteers. Initially, it might have been a means of ensuring survival, but given their proximity to the Capitol, these wealthier districts were heavily influenced by Capitol propaganda. They came to view volunteering for and winning the Hunger Games as a significant honor. As a result, these academies were highly effective, and these particular districts, often referred to as Career Districts, consistently produced the most victors in the Games.

Additionally, Burdock Everdeen and Asterid March are born in the same district, eventually marrying and giving rise to Katniss Everdeen. Beetee Latier emerges victorious in the 34th Hunger Games at the age of 16 using his exceptional electronic skills, electrifying the remaining tributes. On the other hand, Johanna Mason wins the 75th Hunger Games at the age of 18, employing her intelligence to navigate a hall of mirrors without triggering bloodshed. She finds a safe spot in the arena where other contestants can’t reach her due to the reflective surfaces surrounding her.

Sunrise on the Reaping Explored This Period
In the 50th edition of the Games, the Second Quarter Quell took place, a significant event that was delved into in “Sunrise on the Reaping“. This particular set of Games featured double the usual number of tributes from each district. Haymitch Abernathy, along with Maysilee Donner, Wyatt Callow, and Louella McCoy, were selected to represent District 12. Following their selection, Haymitch encountered Plutarch Heavensbee and Effie Trinket, who later proved to be valuable allies. During this time, Haymitch also spent time with previous winners, such as Mags, Wiress, Beetee, who came up with the idea of dismantling the arena from within with assistance from his own son, Ampert Latier.

Katniss Everdeen and the 74th Hunger Games (74 ADD)
The First Hunger Games Novel Explores This Period
74 is the title of the initial book in the original Hunger Games trilogy, where we follow Katniss Everdeen as she steps up for Primrose in the 74th Hunger Games. Following the Reaping, Katniss receives a call from Madge Undersee, the Mayor’s daughter of District 12, to participate in the Games. As the competition begins, Katniss finds herself paired with Peeta. Haymitch, a former victor, guides them on how to present a romantic story between them to the Capitol spectators. In the arena, the game designers seize upon their love narrative, declaring that if two winners come from the same district, they will both be declared victors, forcing Katniss and Peeta to join forces.
In the game’s grand scheme, Katniss pretends to be deeply in love with Peeta for the cameras, and he takes it all at face value. When only Katniss and Peeta remain alive, the game creators declare that there can be only one winner, prompting them to consider consuming deadly nightlock berries together. To prevent a lack of a victor, the game creators permit both of them to be named winners. The Capitol spectators viewed their joint consumption of the berries as an act of love, but President Snow perceived it as an act of rebellion, deeming Katniss a threat that required close surveillance.
The Third Quarter Quell and the Rise of the Revolution (75 ADD)
Katniss Everdeen Succeeded in Destroying the Arena
During their Victory Tour, Snow advises Katniss to emphasize the romantic aspect more, since the district inhabitants viewed her actions with the berries as a symbol of rebellion, sparking unrest in Panem. Worried that Katniss might become the symbol of a revolution, Snow, together with the new game maker Plutarch Heavensbee, reveal that the Third Quarter Quell will involve former victors as tributes, forcing Katniss and Peeta to return to the arena once again.
Instead, it can be rephrased as: In secret, Plutarch collaborates with Haymitch, Beetee, Finnick, Johanna, and others to sabotage the Hunger Games. Their efforts culminate in Katniss’s dramatic act of destroying the arena. As the arena collapses, Katniss is saved by Haymitch and Plutarch, while Peeta and Johanna are apprehended by the Capitol. Meanwhile, Katniss’s destructive actions spark a second rebellion. In retaliation, President Snow orders the bombing of District 12, resulting in the deaths of Peeta’s family and Madge Undersee. However, Gale manages to evacuate a few families before the district is destroyed.
The Second Rebellion and the Fall of President Snow (75 ADD -76 ADD)
Katniss Becomes the Face of the Revolution
In District 13, Katniss crosses paths with President Alma Coin. Over time, she assumes the role of the Mockingjay, symbolizing the rebellion. She manages to convince Coin to launch a rescue mission for Peeta, Johanna, and Annie Cresta from the Capitol. However, upon their arrival in District 13, Peeta has been heavily brainwashed by the Capitol, viewing Katniss as an enemy. Following the creation of some revolutionary propaganda videos and the wedding of Finnick and Annie, Katniss elects to join the fight on the battlefield, supporting the rebels in their assault against the Capitol.
In a city now silenced, the Capitol establishes numerous snares within its boundaries, resulting in Finnick and several other insurgents’ demise. President Coin and Gale devise a strategy to explosion-bomb Capitol inhabitants fleeing the chaos, which claims Primrose among others. Snow eventually yields, with Katniss assigned the grim duty of publicly executing him. However, when President Coin proposes another Hunger Games, this time featuring children from the Capitol as retaliation, Katniss perceives that Coin might transform into another tyrant, potentially ending her life instead. An enraged mob, rather than Snow, meets a violent end in this scenario. Following the events, Katniss is banished from the Capitol, with rebel Commander Paylor being chosen as the next president.
The Epilogue (75 ADD – 95 ADD)
Panem Experiences Peace Post-Rebellion
Returning to District 12 after my harrowing adventures, I stumbled upon Peeta, and over time, our bond deepened into a love that felt as strong and constant as the oak trees in the forest. Fast-forward 20 years, and the concluding scene of our epic tale finds me with Peeta, our family now complete with two beautiful children. In a touching tribute to Haymitch’s beloved Lenore Dove, I brought goose eggs for him to nurture, just as she had done long ago.
The journey of questions is only starting. The battlefields lie in ruins, monuments erected, the Hunger Games are history. However, they’re still taught in schools, and the girl understands she had a part to play. Soon enough, the boy will also come to know this truth.
– Epilogue of Mockingjay, 2010
The movies suggest a potential romantic connection between Haymitch and Effie Trinket, yet the books offer no evidence that Haymitch ever married. Instead, he seems to believe his liver issues from long-term alcoholism would likely lead to an early death. It remains uncertain if the District system was dismantled post-second rebellion; however, Paylor being democratically elected as president suggests a more tranquil future.
