In the upcoming episode of Doctor Who, entitled “Lucky Day,” is penned by Pete McTighe, known for crafting “Kerblam!” and “Praxeus.” The story continues with Millie Gibson’s character, Ruby Sunday.
At the conclusion of season 14, Ruby decided to disembark the TARDIS, wishing to deepen her relationship with her recently discovered birth mother. The upcoming episodes will delve into how her life unfolds post-separation from the Doctor.
Recently, McTighe remarked that it’s unusual for the series, yet he focused on a character where the experience was delved into extensively – Elizabeth Sladen’s Sarah Jane Smith.
McTighe shared that crafting this episode was particularly enjoyable for him because it allowed him to delve into the storyline of what transpires when The Doctor is absent, as he’s off on a mission to save other worlds.
Without the Doctor present, the danger escalates significantly for the human characters, as the risks become greater and they are compelled to venture into situations they might not otherwise encounter, given that the Doctor could typically intervene and resolve problems.
Absolutely, you can find the Doctor in this episode, but it’s mainly Ruby’s tale on Lucky Day. The captivating performance by Millie Gibson during her initial season made me thrilled about the opportunity to deepen her character even more, which was truly exhilarating.
In every instance of Doctor Who, except for Sarah Jane Smith, we haven’t often investigated what becomes of a companion once they cease traveling with the Doctor, or how their journeys affect them later in life. It was delightful to explore this part of their stories.

McTighe added: “I also found it fascinating to shape Jonah Hauer-King’s character, Conrad, who is Ruby’s new boyfriend. He’s a man who deeply admires Ruby and aspires to be as courageous and heroic as the Doctor. However, in his quest to emulate these traits, he unknowingly endangers both himself and Ruby.
In this episode, we introduce an incredible, ferocious, and unyielding creature. It’s too terrifying to reason with, adding a chilling touch to the storyline. Moreover, it was a delight to pen scenes for UNIT; specifically for Kate, Shirley, and Colonel Ibrahim, who courageously intervene to save Ruby and Conrad from the unleashed horrors.
For those who love classic Doctor Who series, you’ll be delighted to know that Paul Jericho is part of this episode! During Peter Davison’s time, he played the Castellan, a strict and suspicious Time Lord. However, in this new installment, he takes on the role of Alfie, the publican. But there seems to be more to Alfie than meets the eye…
Could it be possible that the Castellan didn’t perish in The Five Doctors (1983), instead surviving Gallifrey’s demise and now managing a pub in an English village? I prefer this idea. Let’s entertain that notion instead.
In my perspective, out of all the companions from Doctor Who, Elisabeth Sladen’s Sarah Jane Smith stands out as the one who has had a particularly special connection to the series. After making a comeback in season 4 with Freema Agyeman’s Martha Jones, she was given her very own spin-off show, The Sarah Jane Adventures, following her appearance in season 2’s School Reunion. This just goes to show how significant and enduring her character has been within the Doctor Who universe.
Currently, McTighe is involved in a new spin-off titled “The War Between the Land and the Sea,” which he’s collaborating on with Russell T Davies, who is known for his work on Doctor Who.
Season 15 of Doctor Who resumes on the 3rd of May, 2025. You can stream it exclusively on BBC iPlayer starting from 8 am, and it will be broadcasted on BBC One at 7:10 pm.
