Sebastian Stan still has plenty of XOXO’s for this Gossip Girl alum.
In a retrospective of the show reaching its 19th anniversary, the 42-year-old revealed which of the original cast members he remains connected with. This group includes Blake Lively, Leighton Meester, Penn Badgley, Chase Crawford, and others.
Sebastian mentioned in an exclusive interview with Will Marfuggi from TopMob News at the Thunderbolts premiere in Los Angeles on April 28, “I have many conversations with Chase. We were acquainted before Gossip Girl, and that’s why we remained close. I also worked on Penn Badgley’s podcast at one time, but my relationship with Chase is particularly significant.
In his return as Bucky Barnes in Marvel’s “Thunderbolts,” set for release on May 2, Sebastian acknowledged that his superhero could stand toe-to-toe with Chase’s character from “The Boys,” The Deep. However, he wouldn’t fancy proving it in a real fight.
He suggested a simple solution: let’s have a good laugh about it,” he quipped. “He’s absolutely brilliant.” (For further insights from Sebastian and the Thunderbolts team, catch TopMob News tonight, April 29, at 11 p.m.)
In a more serious note, the Marvel actor went all out by performing numerous stunts in the latest film, alongside co-stars Florence Pugh and David Harbour. This commitment turned out to be quite a challenge.
He acknowledged that they now have less time for preparation compared to before. In essence, it feels like they need to hurry up, learn what’s needed quickly, and then get on with it.
And The Apprentice star noted that he is starting to feel the toll of getting older.
He went on to say, “That’s quite challenging,” and yet, in his mind, he was determinedly thinking, ‘I can handle this.’ Notably, Sebastian remains unwavering in his decision regarding his approach to the movie’s preparation.
He also commented, “It’s enjoyable to encounter difficulties.” He finds it satisfying to continually work on it. The mix of anxiety, adrenaline, and excitement becomes indistinguishable, leaving only amusement at the end.
As he put it, “As long as I can get in there a little bit, I’m grateful.”

Known for playing Jung on the popular Canadian sitcom “Kim’s Convenience,” Simu Liu once donned a Spider-Man costume for kids’ birthday parties during his early acting days. However, unbeknownst to him, he would later become part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Shang-Chi, a fact revealed at San Diego Comic-Con 2019. It’s possible that he had an inkling of this, as the 32-year-old actor posted on Twitter a year prior, “Alright @Marvel, ready to discuss or what #ShangChi.
In a 2021 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Liu recalled receiving the fateful phone call.
On July 16th, 2019, around 6:30 in the evening, Liu had stirred from a nap and was snacking on shrimp crackers while in his undergarments. His apartment was peaceful as his dog dozed. Suddenly, an unfamiliar call came from Burbank, California. Hearing Kevin Feige’s resounding voice on the other end, informing him that his life was about to take a dramatic turn, was quite unforgettable.
Feige, head of Marvel Studios, disclosed to Rotten Tomatoes that Marvel initially evaluated numerous actors for the part, but Liu emerged as a strong contender towards the end of the selection process and ultimately impressed everyone with his audition.
Feige stated, “He’s genuinely outstanding. Introducing a fresh Marvel character isn’t simple, and there’s always a significant amount of stress involved, not only for us but also for the actors. However, Simu has managed to surpass expectations, and I can’t wait for everyone to witness his performance when it debuts in September.
The individual who kick-started everything…initially wasn’t Marvel’s first choice for the role of Tony Stark, a part synonymous with Robert Downey Jr today. However, against Marvel’s initial plans, Director Jon Favreau persistently sought to secure Downey, despite his turbulent history marked by prison terms and rehabilitation.
In an interview with USA Today, director Jon Favreau pointed out that Robert Downey Jr., like his character Tony Stark, didn’t settle for safe choices. The most significant ups and downs of Robert’s personal life have been under public scrutiny. To conquer challenges extending beyond his professional career, he needed to find a sense of inner harmony. This is what Favreau refers to as the resemblance between the actor and the character. Robert brings a level of complexity to the role that goes beyond a typical comic book hero dealing with high school troubles or unrequited love.
In the portrayal, Downey paid close attention, providing suggestions and asking for numerous retakes to ensure a scene was executed perfectly. He admitted, “I am more meticulous now than I used to be.” His intention was to prove to Jon that he was correct in his trust. Any doubts or concerns about his personal life were not an issue with him.
The investment proved immensely fruitful, resulting in the establishment of the world’s leading franchise, catapulting Downey to the status of a highly demanded (and exceptionally remunerated) actor, marking an extraordinary return to prominence.
According to Marvel chief Kevin Feige, speaking with The Toronto Sun, “Robert Downey Jr. is an exceptional talent, a fantastic actor, and he has a remarkable personality and presence that we believed could be utilized magnificently.” He had previously stated that the Marvel Cinematic Universe wouldn’t exist without Robert Downey Jr., as he was able to bring Tony Stark to life in an extraordinary manner due to his great acting skills and incredible charisma.
Initially, Favreau only thought of Downey for the role of Iron Man, but there were other potential candidates such as Clive Owen, Timothy Olyphant, and Sam Rockwell under consideration. Eventually, Rockwell was selected to portray one of the main antagonists in “Iron Man 2”.
Some found it unexpected when Evans, who had previously worked on the less-than-impressive Fantastic Four film at age 29, was chosen by Marvel to play Captain America in 2011’s The First Avenger and serve as the emotional cornerstone for their entire Phase 1 series. However, this decision wasn’t made lightly.
As a devoted follower, I can relate to the challenge of finding the perfect Captain America. I found myself questioning, “Could we ever discover the true Captain America? If not, would the Avengers crumble, would the entire project unravel?” These were my thoughts, as Feige shared with Vanity Fair. However, after initially overlooking Chris Evans due to his role in the Fantastic Four franchise, we eventually gave him a chance. We presented him with our concept, showed him the artwork, and he spent a weekend deliberating.
In a similar vein, Chris Evans has portrayed Captain America with the same level of excellence as any actor has ever brought to a legendary pop-culture character. Previously, Christopher Reeve as Superman was considered the ultimate standard, and I believe that Evans is on par. It’s hard for me to envision anyone else playing this role.
Initially, Evans expressed apprehension about accepting the role and even declined it multiple times before agreeing. He confessed that fear was a significant factor, particularly due to the large number of films he would be committing to and his discomfort with social interactions within this industry. He shared this during an interview with Jimmy Kimmel.
In a distinctly Cap manner, he circled back with this insight: “I was actually saying no out of fear,” Evans admitted. “You shouldn’t act out of fear, you should never do something because you’re terrified. It eventually dawned on me that if you’re afraid of something, challenge yourself to face it.
Notable figures such as Channing Tatum, Garrett Hedlund, Scott Porter, Chace Crawford, and even Dane Cook are rumored to have been contenders for the role of Cap?
In 2010, the comedian admitted to MTV that they were heading into a meeting about ‘Captain America,’ which was quite exciting. After Superman, he considered Captain America his preferred choice among superheroes. (A little tip: It’s not wise to express a preference for a DC superhero when you’re vying for a Marvel movie role!)
Indeed, John Krasinski shared the tale about advancing in the audition stages and even had a chance to put on the costume.
In an interview on Conan, The Office fan favorite expressed that it was a significant moment for him when they asked him to test the suit and he was actually allowed to wear it on set. He described the experience as quite intriguing.
Similar to numerous preceding superheroes, Brie Larson, who won an Oscar for her remarkable debut in the film “Room,” initially hesitated about accepting such a renowned part, which is known for being the most potent figure within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
She confessed to The Hollywood Reporter that she initially felt reluctant about meeting. She thought, “I doubt I can handle or contain what might come with a movie like this. I’m too shy and introverted; it will overwhelm me.” However, as they began discussing the film with her, she found herself saying, “Oh no, this seems to be the perfect blend of everything I’ve aspired for.
For Feige, Larson was the perfect choice.
In an interview with Variety, they mentioned that to balance Captain Marvel’s unprecedented powers, it’s essential to find a character who feels real and familiar to the audience. This character should create a connection with viewers, making them eager to watch her soar through the sky and destroy a moon from a spaceship. However, this character also needs to have human flaws that make us root for them. Brie is exactly such a person; she’s someone you’d want to embark on this adventure alongside.
Previously missing out on offering Emily Blunt two acting opportunities (details forthcoming), it’s said that Marvel considered inviting the actress from “Mary Poppins Returns” to step into their superhero world by playing the half-human, half-Kree character, Carol Danvers.
When asked about the rumors, Blunt stated: “For me, it’s often about what I’m contributing and what would be intriguing to both myself and others. If a role is captivating, whether it’s in a Marvel film or a small production, I am eager to take it on.
It’s said that other potential candidates were actresses like Yvonne Strahovski from “The Handmaid’s Tale” and Katheryn Winnick.
It’s quite straightforward, Marvel announced that Chadwick Boseman, who has gained recognition for his roles as Jackie Robinson in “42” and James Brown in “Get On Up,” is the chosen one to portray the future ruler of Wakanda in the future.
At a table, ideas were flowing as we shaped the narrative for Captain America: Civil War. Our executive producer, Nate Moore, proposed introducing Black Panther since we sought a neutral figure who wouldn’t align with Captain America or Iron Man. As soon as he spoke, everyone exclaimed, “Chadwick!” recalled Feige at a 2018 press event for the film. And in my recollection, though it might have been the following day, we immediately connected with Chadwick over speakerphone right then.
There was no audition process. No extensive negotiations were required. Instead, a simple phone call was made to Chadwick Boseman who was in Zurich promoting the movie ‘Get On Up’. Feige expressed that Boseman was the sole and most fitting candidate for the role.
After that historic event, the story continued in a similar vein. To put it simply, “Black Panther” was groundbreaking as it was the first superhero film to be nominated for the Best Picture Oscar. This achievement marked a milestone, making it the initial Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) production to win any—and impressively, three—Academy Awards. It also ranks among the top-grossing films ever made. Long live Wakanda!
In August 2020, Chadwick Boseman passed away at the age of 43 following a four-year long personal struggle with colon cancer. Upon hearing about his death, Marvel Studios decided against recasting T’Challa in “Black Panther 2.”
Initially, Chris Hemsworth was an obscure choice for portraying the iconic Norse deity. However, it was a near miss as his younger brother, Liam Hemsworth, almost clinched the role instead.
Chris shared on Quora that he had an early audition in the initial stages, but it didn’t turn out well. Later, his younger brother also auditioned and almost got the role. However, they decided against giving him the part because he was considered too young at the time, so the casting call was reopened.
He went on to explain, “I became furious when he almost landed the role, so I returned with renewed anger. I even had to reach out to him and ask, ‘How did the tryout go? Any advice for me?’ Fortunately, he helped, and as a result, I ended up getting the part. It was quite a family-oriented competition, fueled by sibling rivalry!
According to Deadline’s report, Chris, who was 25 at the time, wasn’t initially chosen by the casting director for the role. However, he got another chance and recorded a screen test. Impressed by his performance, both Feige and director Kenneth Branagh approved him immediately.
Besides the Hemsworth brothers, other contenders for the role included Daniel Craig, known for his portrayal of James Bond; Kevin McKidd, a star on Grey’s Anatomy; Triple H from WWE; Charlie Hunnam, who was not yet famous (he later starred in Sons of Anarchy); Joel Kinnaman; and Alexander Skarsgaard. Notably, Stellan Skarsgård, who would later play Dr. Erik Selvig in the film, is Alexander Skarsgaard’s father.
Following his unsuccessful audition for the role, Alexander Skarsgaard shared with MTV, “Indeed, I had a couple of meetings with Kevin [Feige] and the director [Kenneth Branagh], and there is certainly an element of truth to that statement.
Prior to portraying the treacherous character of Loki, Thor’s brother and the god of mischief, who eventually became one of the most adored characters in the MCU, Tom Hiddleston was seriously considered for the leading role.
On my inaugural visit to Los Angeles as an actor, I was offered the role of Thor. After being represented by an agent due to a Shakespeare play I performed in London, they encouraged me to explore LA. During this time, I auditioned for numerous roles, including Thor. This opportunity was attractive to me because I had prior experience working with Kenneth Branagh, who directed the project.
Although he felt “proud” of his audition performance, the outcome didn’t meet his initial expectations as he ended up getting a callback only after being told to build more muscle (reducing his body fat to an impressive 7%).
Tom Hiddleston stated that both Kevin and Keith contacted him directly, sharing the news that he wouldn’t portray Thor, but instead Loki. In a sense, this unexpected turn of events was more like a present, and he has no second thoughts about it whatsoever. He has never once wished to play Thor.
He had no inkling of how the audience would react to the character, confessing that his ideal outcome – which was already optimistic – likely fell short of the actual response he received.
Following Natalie Portman’s departure from the series, Tessa Thompson stepped into the role of Thor: Ragnarok’s new female lead, embodying the comic book character Valkyrie. Unlike some might have expected, she was not solely a love interest for Thor. Instead, her character was confirmed to be the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s first bisexual superhero, a fact that Thompson herself had openly discussed during her initial conversations with director Taika Waititi about the role.
In my role as a devoted follower, I recall numerous preliminary discussions I held with Taika regarding [the part], as one can never tell. Initially, there were whispers, even in the media, suggesting her as a love interest. However, we sought to create a character who was dynamic and independent, not just a sidekick. From the very beginning, Marvel and Taika had a vision for Valkyrie to stand alone and bring something powerful, innovative, and fresh to the table. I believe they’ve shown great wisdom in responding to the call of fans seeking more complex female characters who aren’t always linked to male figures.
Despite some criticism following the announcement of Thompson’s role, since the original character was white and blonde in the comics, Waititi justified the choice during an interview with Comic Book Resources.
From the very beginning, our aim was to vary the cast members, but this can be challenging when dealing with Vikings. The goal is to be more inclusive and offer a wider range of representation. In such situations, it’s essential to view the original source as a flexible guide. Then, trust your instincts and think, “Why should I cling to these details?” or “What if none of that is important?” Just because a character was blonde and white in the original work doesn’t necessarily define who they are.
He went on to say, “Often people overlook this fact. Die-hard fans might argue, ‘It’s not truly in line with the comics,’ but once they engage with the movie and immerse themselves in the narrative, they forget all about it. The very fact that we’re still discussing this is ludicrous because we tend to forget. Unless the film’s theme involves it, it’s almost irrelevant – why should we care? I believe the story takes precedence, and we should aim for the most suitable candidate. We cast a wide search, and Tess was the most fitting choice.
Following Marvel assuming control of Spidey from Sony, with Andrew Garfield no longer in contention, a host of promising young actors became candidates for the sought-after role, including Timothée Chalamet, who is currently adored by many online.
Among the contenders under consideration were Charlie Rowe, Charlie Plummer, Asa Butterfield, Matthew Lintz, and Dylan O’Brien. However, Marvel opted for an relatively unrecognized actor named Tom Holland as their new Spider-Man in 2015. When these finalists were called to audition with Downey for the film “Civil War”, which laid the groundwork for the solo Spidey movie, RDJ remarked, “Everyone else was talented, but then there was something extraordinary [about Holland].
In a statement for the press, Tom Rothman, Chairman of Sony Pictures Motion Pictures Group, expressed his conviction that the actor named Tom possesses exceptional talent, similar to those who have become superstars after working with him previously. Regarding the character of Spidey, he mentioned that numerous promising young actors were considered, but Tom’s audition tapes stood out distinctly. Summing it up, Rothman stated that everything is off to a great start for the project.
Indeed, the selection of Holland proved to be spot-on, as critics praised him highly following the 2017 release of Spider-Man: Homecoming, even going so far as to call him “the greatest movie Spider-Man yet.” (Apologies to Tobey Maguire and Andrew!)
Has there ever been a more tumultuous role than that of the Hulk?
At first, Eric Bana portrayed the grumpy green creature in the 2003 movie called “Hulk”. Unfortunately, this film didn’t receive positive reviews from critics and struggled financially. Consequently, Marvel Studios opted to restart the series, with Edward Norton stepping into the role for the 2008 production titled “The Incredible Hulk”.
The movie performed fairly well, but it appeared that Norton wasn’t too keen on the demanding shooting and marketing commitments of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (as well as rumors of artistic disagreements surfaced).
Marvel announced that they will not be recasting Edward Norton as Bruce Banner/The Hulk in “The Avengers,” stating their decision is not financially motivated but stemmed from the need for an actor who aligns with the creativity and collaborative spirit of the rest of the cast. They are looking for actors who excel in ensemble work, a crucial aspect for the successful execution of “The Avengers.
In response, Norton’s team has labeled the statement as both offensive and petty, rejecting the accusations, explaining that Marvel’s move was primarily a financial decision.
It turned out to be fortunate for Marvel as they discovered Mark Ruffalo was the ideal choice for the role. They also realized that the Hulk character functioned better within an ensemble, rather than in solo films. As Feige stated at a press conference, “Mark Ruffalo’s portrayal of the Hulk set many things straight and made us all extremely satisfied.
Hulk, as Ruffalo humorously put it in an interview with Vanity Fair, is like our generation’s Hamlet. Everyone will have a turn playing the role before we wrap everything up.
Prior to Scarlett Johansson assuming the part of the inaugural female Avenger, playing the ex-Russian spy-turned-tough S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Natasha Romanoff in 2010’s “Iron Man 2”, Emily Blunt was initially set to take on the role. Regrettably, scheduling conflicts with the 2010 flop “Gulliver’s Travels” caused an obstacle. (Ever unforgiving, ever mindful!)
Prior to Scarlett Johansson being confirmed for the role, Eliza Dushku had expressed her interest and advocated for it, stating on The Howard Stern Show that she was “an ideal fit for the Black Widow character, if only they would consider it.” Unfortunately, they chose someone else.
Following her successful casting, Johansson admitted during an interview that she dyed her hair red as a way to persuade Marvel that she was their ideal choice for the role of Black Widow.
A year before filming began, I had a conversation with Jon Feige and Kevin about some potential Marvel superheroes, including Black Widow. At the time, it seemed they were considering incorporating her into the movie. During our discussion, we brainstormed various aspects of how to introduce the character. When I met Jon for a second time, I had dyed my hair red, partly because I wanted to try a new look and partly because I hoped he would appreciate the change.
From my perspective as a lifestyle expert, it wasn’t until “The Avengers” that fans truly delved into the character of Natasha, although director Joss Whedon initially harbored concerns about scheduling conflicts potentially hindering Scarlett Johansson from reprising her role in the 2012 blockbuster ensemble production.
Due to the tight shooting schedule, there was a point where we weren’t certain if Scarlett would be available. However, I was overjoyed when she agreed to join the project as she significantly enhances our film and provides an intriguing contrast to her male co-stars. Scarlett is remarkably different from her character because she’s so amusing, charming, and adorable, he explained. He aimed for her to portray the role in a way that was nearly the opposite of her real self, as they wanted Black Widow to be a more sinister version of her character from Iron Man 2. The film offers a glimpse into Black Widow’s troubled past, and it isn’t a pretty picture. Scarlett is meticulous about her character portrayal, which made the development of Black Widow very effective.
At long last, I can hardly contain my excitement as a die-hard fan! Finally, Scarlett Johansson will star in her own solo film with “Black Widow” gracing the big screen in July 2021, having been postponed due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
Following his outstanding portrayal in “The Hurt Locker”, Jeremy Renner eventually accepted the part to play S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Clint Barton, despite dismissing the speculations about it for several months.
Hawkeye might turn out to be intriguing. They’ll send me material about it to check out, let’s see what it’s all about,” Renner shared with Empire once. “I believe they’re doing a great job, trying to make superhero films feel more realistic rather than just another fantasy story.
Initially, Renner appeared in a small, unacknowledged role in the 2011 film Thor, and it was not until The Avengers in 2012 that his character Hawkeye was formally introduced. However, the actor expressed discontent later on about the development of the human character’s storyline in the movie.
In the end, it turned out that I only portrayed a fraction of the character I had agreed to play in the movie. As it stands, I’m barely on-screen for two minutes before things take an unexpected turn. Consequently, there isn’t much depth or insight we can glean about Clint Barton, or Hawkeye for that matter, such as whether he is still working with S.H.I.E.L.D., leaving many questions unanswered, even for myself.
He continued, “At least I managed to stay part of the film,” he remarked. “I was grateful for that…there are many actors in that movie. Many key roles. And my role, I believed, if it could aid the narrative, then I had done what I was supposed to do.
In the following installment, Whedon expanded Clint’s character, unveiling the shocking truth that Hawkeye was married with children. Joss Whedon shared this sentiment on Tumblr, expressing his delight in the concept of one superhero having a hidden aspect, being an ordinary individual deeply rooted in the world, unlike any other Avenger. Although much of the suspenseful build-up was eliminated, the emotional and thematic impact remained powerful for Whedon.
Approaching “Avengers: Endgame” after Renner’s absence in “Infinity War”, fans eagerly anticipated the portrayal of Hawkeye’s transition into the comic book character, Ronin, with a darker persona.
In an interview, Renner expressed that he is accomplishing many amazing things with the character he’s working on, which has long been a desire of his. He believes that everyone will be highly satisfied once they discover the outcome.
Come on, it was Samuel L. Jackson alone who perfectly embodied Nick Fury. The reason being that the character from the Ultimate Marvel Comics series was actually modeled after him.
In an admission to Business Insider, comic book writer Mark Millar confessed that he and artist Bryan Hitch freely utilized Sam, who was then considered the coolest man alive, without seeking permission. He noted that it was 2001 when they were working on this project, and the notion that it could become a movie seemed implausible as Marvel was still recovering from bankruptcy at the time.
Eventually, Jackson agreed to a nine-film contract with Marvel Studios, and Nick Fury was utilized effectively to intertwine numerous superhero narratives, with the previous head of S.H.I.E.L.D. making his debut in the post-credits scene of Iron Man, marking the first appearance of a character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe…and this initial appearance unexpectedly turned out to be a pivotal moment for the entire franchise, although it wasn’t originally planned as such when the brief cameo was conceived.
Jon Favreau shared with EW that adding Easter eggs was something they found enjoyable. One such Easter egg was the post-credit scene featuring Nick Fury, which was not initially part of the script. They decided to have Sam Jackson play the role because in the comic book series The Ultimates, Nick Fury was recast as Sam Jackson, and it was a clever nod for fans. Kevin Feige supported this idea and helped craft the dialogue, carefully choosing each word. The dialog hinted at a larger world and universe, subtly setting up the Avengers Initiative and suggesting that the characters would eventually come together, although many things needed to fall into place for that to happen. They were essentially laying out a mission statement of purpose, hoping that the few people who stayed in the theater until the end credits would understand and appreciate it most.
Little did he know Feige has major plans.
In the movie “Captain Marvel,” which is the ninth film from Marvel Studios, the filmmakers used digital technology to make Samuel L. Jackson appear about 20 years younger. This allowed him to portray Nick Fury in the mid-’90s setting of the film. Essentially, this version of the movie serves as a backstory for the Nick Fury character that fans are familiar with today.
Following his remarkable role in “The Hurt Locker“, Anthony Mackie was chosen to take on the part of Captain America’s latest sidekick in “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” thereby initiating a delightful three-way friendship dynamic with Sebastian Stan‘s character, Bucky, as time went on.
However, during the 2015 Emerald City Comic-Con, it was disclosed that instead of the character for which he is now famous, he had initially contacted Marvel with another character in mind.
In the beginning, my intention for penning those words was fueled by my aspiration to become Black Panther. However, fate had other plans and I was approached instead about embodying Falcon – a part I wholeheartedly embraced with enthusiasm beyond simple happiness.
As a lifestyle aficionado, I couldn’t help but feel thoroughly content and elated, working alongside those extraordinary individuals day after day – quite like Falcon sharing the screen with Captain America. It’s not about personal glory or asserting dominance; it’s an exhilarating privilege to be part of a phenomenal film production alongside a fantastic team.
In an interview with Collider, co-director Anthony Russo expressed his reasons for casting Anthony Mackie as the Falcon in “Captain America: The Winter Soldier”. Russo said, “We were drawn to Anthony Mackie for this role because he has a vibrant energy and playful spirit. Captain America is in a very challenging emotional state in this movie; he’s essentially waking up in a modern world, and he’s lost everything – his entire support system is gone. It’s a deeply emotional and psychological place to be, and Mackie brings this wonderful, uplifting energy that we felt was essential for helping Captain America find friendship again.
Following the handover of the shield by Cap in “Endgame”, Mackie then soared off to collaborate with Stan on their Disney+ series titled “Falcon and the Winter Soldier“. The series culminated with Sam taking up the role of Captain America.
Prior to being chosen as Cap’s friend-turned-foe-turned-friend once more, Sebastian Stan initially tried out for the leading role instead. On Vanity Fair’s Still Watching podcast, it was revealed that they perceived a more ominous quality in Stan, which didn’t align perfectly with Steve Rogers’ character.
In 2016, Stan openly shared with People that he was deeply disappointed not to have been chosen as Captain America. He recalled receiving a call where they said, “You did well, but it isn’t for you.
Luckily, another call arrived promptly, with the star of “I, Tonya” expressing enthusiasm, “When they contacted me again to reveal another role I should consider, I was thrilled because it meant my chances weren’t finished yet.” This excitement would last as he inked a 9-movie contract, much like Evans did.
Now, Stan is instrumental in bringing the Marvel Cinematic Universe to television, collaborating with Mackie on Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
Following her impressive breakthrough from her renowned older twin sisters’ limited spotlight in the 2011 independent movie “Martha Marcy May Marlene”, director Joss Whedon recognized that Elizabeth Olsen possessed the talent he needed for the role of the Russian superheroine, who possesses mind-reading abilities and telekinesis after undergoing experiments by H.Y.D.R.A., in the film.
However, she wasn’t completely certain about the purpose of the meeting initially. She explained to EW, “I met with Joss and had a vague idea about the characters we were discussing. No one informed me. All I knew was it was related to the next Avengers movie, and they were introducing two new characters, and that was all I was aware of.
Prior to Olsen being chosen for the role, there had been a lot of talk about Saoirse Ronan potentially taking on the character of Scarlet Witch. It was even said that Marvel used her as a model during the development phase.
As a lifestyle expert, I’d put it this way: By the closing chapters of “Age of Ultron,” the Scarlet Witch had become a pivotal member of the emerging Avengers team. However, two significant setbacks marked her journey – the tragic demise of my brother in combat and the gradual disappearance of my Russian accent, which was no longer heard by the time “Infinity War” rolled around.
In 2021, I was thrilled to be part of the launch of Marvel’s venture into television with the series “WandaVision.” This remarkable production offered fans like me a long-awaited glimpse into the transformation of Wanda into the formidable Scarlet Witch.
Paul Bettany boasts an impressive tenure within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), a fact you might not have realized. This talented British actor provided the voice for JARVIS, Tony Stark’s reliable AI companion, all the way back in the first Iron Man film that ignited the entire series. It’s quite possible that JARVIS’ amusing origin story is one of the funniest within the entire MCU.
According to Bettany, he received a phone call from Jon Favreau who stated, “I require a voice for a somewhat impersonal robot and you immediately came to mind,” which made him laugh hysterically. In the end, he agreed to the role.
In the film “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” Marvel took an unusual step by choosing Bettany to portray Vision. Previously known as JARVIS, this character underwent a transformation when his digital consciousness was transferred into a mechanical body, which also housed the Mind Stone, thus giving birth to the superhero. (RIP! refers to Rest In Peace, indicating that JARVIS is no longer alive in his previous form.)
According to Bettany, there’s a Marvel rule that prohibits actors from portraying more than one character within their universe. However, they made an exception for him because Joss Whedon strongly desired to introduce The Vision into the cinematic world and felt that Bettany was the ideal choice for the role.
So how was the transition from two hours of voice work to physically being on set?
Previously, Bettany humorously compared his work to that of a pirate grabbing a bag of cash at the end of the day for only two hours’ worth of effort. Now, however, he has to put in genuine effort and attend regularly.
That stuff ultimately included starring with Elizabeth Olsen in Disney+’s WandaVision.
Known best for his endearing, dim-witted character Andy Dwyer on NBC’s Parks and Recreation, it was Chris Pratt’s role in Guardians of the Galaxy that catapulted him into Hollywood stardom. Beyond his shift from comedic sidekick to captivating leading man, Pratt made headlines with a remarkable physical transformation, taking on the role of Peter Quill and leading an eclectic group of space misfits in this blockbuster film.
In an interview with The Huffington Post, Pratt confessed that from the start, it seemed like the ideal role for him. He recalled that during his initial audition, he believed he had aced it, but was concerned about his physical suitability since he was still quite heavy at the time. Despite sensing a match in spirit and knowing his spirit fit the part, he felt his appearance didn’t align yet.
Initially, director James Gunn had reservations, acknowledging that he wasn’t keen on Chris Pratt at first. Pratt was heavier at the time, and Gunn thought he was more of a comedian, believing he wasn’t suitable for the role. However, during his audition, just 20 seconds in, Gunn realized, “That’s the man for the job!
Nevertheless, Pratt managed to shed approximately 60 pounds within six months, humorously chronicling the process on Instagram (“Six months without beer. #GOTG A bit show-offy to post this, but my brother made me” was the caption for one gym photo with him shirtless). Eventually, his transformed physique earned him numerous magazine covers and headlines celebrating his amazing new figure.
Feige expressed his admiration for the versatility of the actor, stating, “He plays a comically awkward character in ‘Parks and Rec,’ yet he transforms into an impressively muscular figure in ‘Zero Dark Thirty.’ It’s quite remarkable. He’ll need that flexibility for ‘Guardians’ as it demands a wide range of performances.
Unbeknownst to Pratt during the audition phase, the Marvel team was already planning ahead. As Feige explained, “We usually cast for the current movie, but we also consider the future. When we were selecting Chris Pratt, we wanted the perfect Star-Lord, but at the same time, we thought, ‘We need someone who could potentially match wits with Robert Downey Jr.’ (And indeed, they faced off in Infinity War.)
Initially, Marvel Entertainment had other actors in mind for the role of Peter Quill (Star-Lord), such as Eddie Redmayne, Joel Edgerton, Jack Huston, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Lee Pace. Eventually, Pace landed the villainous role of Ronan the Accuser. However, after Chris Pratt, Glenn Howerton, a popular star from “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” emerged as a strong contender for the part.
Among all the talented actresses, it seems fitting to cast Zoe Saldana, given her outstanding action background from movies like Avatar and Star Trek, as the perfect choice for portraying the deadliest woman in the galaxy, who is also the estranged daughter of Thanos.
Initially, discussions centered around utilizing Computer-Generated Imagery (CGI) for the green assassin’s role. However, Zaldana chose to undergo extensive four-hour makeup sessions on a daily basis instead.
In an interview with Net-a-Porter, Saldana defended Marvel actors against accusations of selling out by making superhero films. She argued that those who criticize the genre should consider the impact it has on young children. “By disparaging me,” she said, “you’re also belittling what that child values in their world.” Saldana expressed pride in being part of a universe that allows her to live in space and play alien characters, particularly inspiring younger generations. She recalled feeling excluded as a child and believes the superhero genre provides a platform for those who might otherwise feel left out.
Nevertheless, Saldana harbored significant apprehensions prior to committing, acknowledging that director James Gunn endorsed all her suggestions wholeheartedly.
During an interview with bloggers, she expressed her feelings about the script, stating, “From Gamora’s perspective, I wasn’t particularly thrilled. They want me in every scene, but I don’t have any lines in them,” she said. Translated into simpler terms, it means, “I’m supposed to be in all scenes, but I don’t get to say anything. So, I’m going to spend six months on set, endure five hours of makeup every day for six days a week, just to be a silent observer in every scene? And listen to everyone cracking jokes…Before any break, you’re going to shoot my close-ups? That’s not what’s going to happen.
Moreover, Gamora served as an emotional foundation for the series, and played a crucial part in “Infinity War.
Initially, Saldana was Marvel’s preferred candidate for the role, but there were also other actresses reportedly in contention such as Olivia Wilde, Gina Carano, and Adrianne Palicki. However, it was later Palicki who joined the Marvel TV universe, portraying Bobbi Morse on ABC’s “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”
Saldana was first considered for the role, but other actresses like Olivia Wilde, Gina Carano, and Adrianne Palicki were also mentioned as possibilities. Eventually, it was Palicki who appeared in the Marvel TV series “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” as Bobbi Morse.
Instead of opting for the traditional Marvel leading role like many of his contemporaries, Bradley Cooper chose a less common path in the realm of superheroes.
During his interview on Ellen, Cooper explained that Rocket’s voice resembles a mix between Gilbert Gottfried and Joe Pesci. Originally, he had planned for a much more serious tone similar to Daniel Day Lewis in There Will Be Blood.
Fans may not realize that it’s not Cooper who puts on the green suit to portray Rocket in the movies. Instead, it is Sean Gunn, the sibling of director James Gunn, who takes on the role. Additionally, Sean Gunn also acts as Kraglin, a member of the Ravagers.
In simpler terms, the actor is responsible for serving as a reference for movement during filming. This means everything Sean does on set while portraying Rocket gets recorded. As James Gunn explained on Facebook, they keep shooting takes until the performance is perfected, and this performance often forms the foundation for much of Rocket’s acting in the final production.
Prior to securing the director and lead actor for A Star Is Born, Marvel is said to have explored the possibility of having popular comedians such as Adam Sandler and Jim Carrey lend their voices to a crude-talking member of the Guardians.
Without a doubt, one of the beloved figures in the multibillion-dollar MCU series is voiced by an actor known for another significant franchise – Fast and Furious’ Vin Diesel. Interestingly, his journey within this universe started as a joke, as the studio reached out to him about a role following his Facebook post suggesting that Marvel had “proposed a meeting.
Instead of just saying “I am Groot,” Diesel was given distinct scripts, which helped convey the intended meaning and tone for each instance when Groot spoke.
On Instagram, director James Gunn previously shared that there’s a unique version of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, which only he and Vin Diesel have access to. In this special edition, all lines spoken by Groot are written in English.
Even though Groot perished at the conclusion of the initial Guardians of the Galaxy movie, transforming into a small pot-bound sapling, Diesel continued to provide his voice for Baby Groot.
Gunn explained to Entertainment Weekly that our characters undergo minimal processing, but it’s quite limited. Essentially, it’s primarily Vin Diesel’s voice we rely on. Remarkably, he can speak at a pitch higher than his usual one.
Prior to securing a major role in DC’s Aquaman, it was disclosed that Jason Momoa had discussions about portraying Drax and even tried out for the part alongside Chris Pratt. However, he ultimately decided to decline the offer.
The actor from “Game of Thrones” stated to Zap2It that the role didn’t align with his current time because he often portrays characters who are quiet, heavily-made-up, and shirtless. He clarified that it wasn’t a poor role, but rather not the appropriate fit. Previously, for four years, he played a character similar to this on “Stargate: Atlantis,” named Ronon, who was an alien with minimal dialogue. The actor has already experienced this type of character, whether or not audiences are familiar with it. He expressed a desire to explore different roles and expand his acting range.
Marvel ultimately selected WWE star Dave Bautista as their ideal Drax, but he confessed to feeling “terrified” during the audition period. According to Bautista, with each callback, it grew increasingly nerve-wracking and authentic. (Wired)
As a lifestyle expert, I’d rephrase that statement like this: When it came to selecting the perfect fit for the MMA fighter role, Feige highlighted the exceptional chemistry between Bautista and Pratt during their improvised exchanges and screen tests. This dynamic energy was undeniably captivating!
Landing a place on the unconventional Guardians of the Galaxy team was an exciting reality for him; Bautista shared with Hero Complex, “I’m still finding it hard to believe that I landed this job! It’s something I desired more than anything else in my life. When I got it, I cried like a baby.
Hey, to spend five hours in make-up every day, you gotta love what you do!
Has there ever been a more thrilling casting reveal than when Karen Gillan, at Comic-Con in 2013, unveiled her shaved head on stage, signaling her joining the cast of Guardians of the Galaxy as Nebula, one of the film’s primary antagonists and the sister of Gamora?
Previously well-loved in the genre during her time on Doctor Who, Gillan shared with W Magazine later that during the audition for Guardians of the Galaxy, they asked if she was open to shaving her head. Finding the project intriguing and ready for a change, she agreed. Her long red hair had always been a distinctive trait for her.
Initially, it was planned for Nebula to perish in the first Guardians of the Galaxy film; however, later, Gillespie shared with Entertainment Weekly that she was pleasantly surprised when given the opportunity to reappear and become a part of the team in the subsequent movie. This was an unexpected turn of events for her.
In the climax of “Infinity War”, Nebula managed to outlive her adopted father Thanos’ devastating snap of his fingers, ending up as one of the few survivors alongside Tony Stark at the film’s conclusion.
In his own words, James Dunn referred to Pom Klementieff as “simply remarkable and incredibly effortless” when she came aboard as Mantis in Vol. 2. This talented actress joined the cast as a unique member who possesses the ability to manipulate the feelings of others.
“She blew me away,” he continued. “She’s amazing, and I can’t wait to share her with the world.”
As a lifestyle expert, I’m thrilled to share some behind-the-scenes insights on the casting process for one of Marvel’s iconic roles. In the announcement, Director James Gunn shared that we, at Marvel Studios, thoroughly auditioned numerous talented actresses for this coveted role. Four outstanding performers graced our screens during screen tests, each bringing an extraordinary depth to the character. However, it was Pom Klementieff who stood out as the most emotionally resonant among them. Her ability to tap into deep, raw emotions is truly her superpower, mirroring the essence of the character we sought. So, in a way, empathy is not just a part of her role; it’s her unique gift that makes her perfect for this extraordinary journey ahead.
Enthusiastic about the original film, the French actress openly expressed that she was quite nervous during her audition process.
In 2012, the internet was thrilled when Paul Rudd, one of Hollywood’s cherished actors, snagged the part of Marvel’s tiny superhero.
Feige expressed a great sense of relief since discovering the perfect star is crucial for any Marvel Studios film, and from the beginning, we believed Paul was the right choice. Not only did he agree to take on the role, but his eagerness to contribute matched that of any actor we’ve ever spoken to – confirming that we had indeed found the ideal candidate.
As a devoted admirer, prior to the announcement of Sir Idris Elba’s casting, it was Joseph Gordon-Levitt who was strongly contemplated for the role, as per a report by Variety.
Previously well-liked due to her roles as Kate on ABC’s Lost and Tauriel in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, Evangeline Lilly was chosen for the part of Hope van Dyne in Ant-Man. At the movie’s conclusion, she memorably uttered the line, “Long overdue.
In 2017, Evangeline Lilly made history by starring as the leading character in “Ant-Man and The Wasp,” making her the first woman to take the spotlight in a Marvel Cinematic Universe film. Significantly, Hope’s character assumed the role of the Wasp, replacing her mother as the bearer of the mantle.
Lilly shared with ESPN that there were many female partners depicted in the initial comics, a pattern that is now being continued by Marvel. This development is particularly thrilling for her, as it means women are receiving these roles where they are portrayed as complete and well-rounded characters.
Lilly isn’t particularly keen on a solo Wasp film, as she feels Scott and Hope work well together. She expresses this by stating, “I’m not crazy about splitting them up—unless there was a female-led Avengers movie…then I’d be on board.” I agree with her!
Before Lilly’s selection, there were rumors that both Emma Stone and Rashida Jones had conversations with Marvel about the part. Additionally, it was reported that Jessica Chastain had a scheduling conflict and declined the role.
There was a strong reaction online when whispers began that Benedict Cumberbatch, famous for his portrayal of Sherlock Holmes in ‘Sherlock’, was the top choice to embody Doctor Strange, Marvel’s most daring solo project to date. Unfortunately, scheduling issues initially made this collaboration impossible. In an interview with Empire, Cumberbatch admitted that he believed it was a lost opportunity, saying “I thought I had to let it go.
Introduce: Joaquin Phoenix, another unexpected yet distinguished candidate, who had discussions with Marvel Studios, but the collaboration never materialized. Phoenix later hinted, “I appreciate those films at times, and I believe they contribute to keeping the film industry alive in certain ways…I’m trying to phrase this delicately…Everyone seemed content with how things unfolded.” (It is possible that Phoenix was a fan of DC Comics all along, as he went on to win an Oscar for his portrayal of the Joker in 2020.)
Following discussions with several individuals (apparently involving Tom Hardy and Jared Leto), director Scott Derrickson was successful in persuading Marvel Studios to postpone filming so they could secure their top pick for the famous role of the doctor-turned-sorcerer.
Derrickson praised Benedict for being ideal as Doctor Strange, noting that he possesses both a high level of education and intelligence, suggesting he could excel as a top neurosurgeon. He further commended Benedict’s acting skills, describing him as intelligent, deep, and versatile. In the role, Benedict was to portray an arrogant neurosurgeon embarking on an emotional journey, marked by pain, suffering, disorientation, anger, and eventually enlightenment. Derrickson felt that few actors could capture all these nuances, but Benedict stood out. He also highlighted Benedict’s potential as an action star, noting his ability to evoke emotion even in the heat of action scenes. Harrison Ford was cited as a timeless example of such versatility, where audiences remain captivated by his expressions regardless of what he is doing, and Derrickson believed Benedict shared this quality.
