The closing of the Muppets courtyard at Disney’s Hollywood Studios marks the end of one chapter and the start of another difficult transformation process.
From May 11th onwards, Disney will initiate a gradual closure of the Muppets Courtyard, symbolizing the gradual removal of one of the remaining areas in the parks that celebrated Jim Henson’s legacy. On May 10th, Mama Melrose’s Ristorante Italiano will serve its last meals and then close permanently. However, other attractions such as MuppetVision 3D, which was the final project Henson worked on before his untimely death in the early ’90s, will continue operating for a few more weeks.
But make no mistake: the clock is ticking.

Starting June 8th, as per Disney’s plans, construction barriers will be erected, marking the permanent closure of the entire Muppets Courtyard area. This change will remove MuppetVision 3D from the park’s attractions list. In its stead, Disney intends to construct a Monsters Inc.-themed land. The centerpiece of this new area will be their first-ever suspended roller coaster, designed to replicate the thrill of soaring through the famous “door vault” scene from Monsters, Inc., a dream realization for Disney, as they aim to faithfully recreate that memorable movie moment.
For avid Muppet enthusiasts and those who admire Jim Henson’s extraordinary creativity, this recent development might seem less like a cause for jubilation and more like an unexpected blow to the heart.
A Creative Loss Far Beyond a Single Attraction
The sadness from this closing isn’t only due to the loss of another family-oriented venue, but also because MuppetVision 3D stands unique as a significant landmark in entertainment history.
MuppetVision 3D isn’t just an ordinary theme park show; it was personally directed by Jim Henson before his sad demise in 1990, making it a unique testament to his creative genius. This production marks the last collaboration between Henson and his original team – Frank Oz, Richard Hunt, Jerry Nelson, Dave Goelz, and the entire creative force that shaped the Muppets into a cultural powerhouse.

This production showcases the genuine tones, wit, and essence of the original Muppets, reflecting at their finest moment. After it ends, there won’t be another venue where you can encounter the Muppets precisely as Henson intended – with their unique, unadulterated humor preserved from subsequent corporate revivals.
Many viewers found that MuppetVision 3D offered more than just a walk down memory lane. It was a vibrant exhibit, an affectionate tribute to creativity, and a proof of Henson’s wit and compassion enduring through the ages.
Its closure is nothing short of a historical loss.
Another Sign of Disney’s New Priorities
Closing the Muppets Courtyard is simply the most recent example of Disney’s strategic approach, which involves gradually eliminating one-of-a-kind, emotionally resonant attractions to make room for rapid integration of Intellectual Properties (IP) and high-speed adventure rides.
On different occasions, Disney has shown a tendency to deviate from its historical values. For instance, we’ve witnessed modifications such as altering EPCOT’s initial concept, replacing Splash Mountain with a retheme driven by political considerations, and increasingly prioritizing movie tie-ins over traditional characters and experiences. The latest casualty in this shift seems to be The Muppets, who have been neglected for quite some time now.

Instead of re-investing in the enduring charm of the Muppets, a brand cherished for its heart, humor, and sincerity by numerous generations, Disney opted to concentrate on Monsters Inc., another Pixar classic from their golden age, but one that’s already extensively present in their theme parks and merchandise offerings.
As a movie enthusiast, it feels disheartening when originality and honoring historical significance seem to take a backseat to marketing strategies and instant audience gratification.
A Betrayal of Jim Henson’s Trust
Perhaps most painful is what this decision symbolizes: the breaking of a promise.
Initially, Jim Henson started negotiations with Disney over introducing the Muppets into their theme parks, as he had faith in Disney to responsibly manage his cherished characters. He was confident that Disney would preserve the distinctive essence of the Muppets rather than conceal it behind construction barriers and fresh amusement rides.

By shutting down MuppetVision 3D, Disney isn’t merely taking out an aging exhibit; they are effectively closing the final glimpse into Jim Henson’s creative soul and emotions. They are essentially muting the last remaining trace of a man whose work was all about expressing love, humor, and unbridled imagination.
And fans have every right to feel betrayed.
A Final Chance to Say Goodbye
As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but share this bittersweet news: if you cherish the magic of MuppetVision 3D as much as I do, mark your calendars. The final curtain call is set for June 7th. After that day, the enchanting doors will shut forever.
Instead, we won’t see further instances of Sam Eagle stumbling through a “magnificent three-hour conclusion.”
There will be no continued commentary from Statler and Waldorf from their balcony vantage point.
Additionally, there will be no more touching tributes to what Disney once symbolized and the essence of creativity it represented.

After the building barriers are erected, a fragment of history will be enclosed, becoming inaccessible to upcoming generations who may never appreciate the enchantment of stepping into a theatre and sharing laughter with Kermit the Frog, just as Jim Henson originally envisioned.
