1047 Games, the developer behind it, has declared that their upcoming competitive shooter with a portal twist, known as Splitgate 2, will launch an open beta on May 22nd. This announcement was accompanied by a teaser trailer (see below for a sneak peek). The open beta can be accessed on PC via both Steam and the Epic Games Store, as well as on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. Notably, all versions offer cross-platform multiplayer.
The upcoming open beta for Splitgate 2 offers a variety of over 25 weapons to experiment with, one of them being the recently named energy carbine power weapon called the Borealis. Additionally, there will be more than 15 maps available, two of which are brand new, massive 24-player Onslaught maps known as Drought and Fracture.
During the open beta of Splitgate 2, gamers will have the opportunity to experiment with over ten different game modes, such as the reintroduced Takedown mode. In this mode, the objective is for one team to wipe out all members of the opposing team before they respawn, ultimately securing victory.
Additionally to the provided content, Splitgate 2 is set to introduce a feature during its open beta known as “endless” or “indefinite” map options. As of now, specifics about this feature remain undisclosed. The developers have hinted that they will clarify the concept behind “infinite” maps, as well as provide details on all the accessible game modes and maps, closer to when the beta officially begins.
1047 Games has shared that while the original Splitgate was influenced by games like Halo and Portal’s portal mechanics, they aim to establish a unique identity for the sequel. In January, studio head Ian Proulx emphasized that Splitgate 2 should stand on its own.
Proulx commented that ‘Halo meets Portal’ was a decent slogan for a group without marketing funds, but for the sequel, we aim to carve our unique path. We don’t simply want to be known as ‘the Halo meets Portal team.’ Those games were undeniably influential, and we openly acknowledge that, but Splitgate 2 needs to establish its own identity.
Additionally, Proulx mentioned that the studio would draw inspiration from other live-service games when providing post-release content for Splitgate 2. The reason being, despite the initial popularity of the original Splitgate, players didn’t often return to the game after their first experience.
Proulx pointed out that our initial player retention was exceptional, on par with top-tier shooter games. Players would engage with Splitgate for approximately four weeks, enjoy themselves, and often leave positive feedback – we have a 92% positive rating on Steam. However, they eventually found themselves running out of activities to participate in. Competing games like Apex Legends, Call of Duty, Fortnite, Valorant would release major updates, leading players to return to those titles. The key takeaway from this experience is the critical role that continuous game development plays; identifying and rapidly adapting to this aspect is incredibly valuable.
Although Splitgate 2 doesn’t have a confirmed launch date yet, developer 1047 Games has been unveiling several trailers for the game. Take a look at the one from December 2024, which showcases the three playable factions and demonstrates how portals can alter the usual dynamics of a multiplayer shooter.
